John Lennon didn’t think he was the most thoughtful musical producer in the world, but he called out Ringo Starr’s producer for being “too painstaking.” That’s quite the take, considering the producer in question gave us some of Ringo’s best albums. He was also behind popular tunes from Carly Simon and Harry Nilsson.
John Lennon slammed Ringo Starr’s producer, Richard Perry
During a 1975 interview with Rolling Stone, John said rumors that he took a long time to complete The Beatles’ songs were false. “I don’t want to make myself so painstaking that it’s boring,” he said. “But I should (pause) maybe t’ink a little more. Maybe.
“But on the other hand I think my criticism of somebody like Richard Perry would be that he’s great but he’s too painstaking,” he said. “It gets too slick and somewhere in between that...

The first week of November 2023 is an incredible time for classic rock fans. November 2 saw the release of The Beatles’ “Now and Then” while November 4 will see the premiere of Priscilla, a new film about Elvis Presley’s relationship with his wife. This raises an interesting question: When was the last time fans were treated to a new Beatles single and a new Elvis movie in the same month?
Elvis Presley made a movie with a ‘Batman’ actor
Elvis knew how to make movies — and make ’em fast. 1968 saw the release of three new Elvis movies: the Western Stay Away, Joe, the Nancy Sinatra co-starring vehicle Speedway, and Live a Little, Love a Little, the movie that gave us “A Little Less Conversation.”
According to Graceland.com, Stay Away, Joe came out on March 8, 1968. The movie is most notable for featuring Burgess Meredith. Meredith was most known for playing the...

Ringo Starr‘s “Photograph” proved that Ringo and George Harrison could be just as potent a duo as Lennon-McCartney. Ringo revealed he and George wrote “Photograph” at a famous film festival. It took a combination of 16 tracks to get the song just right.
George Harrison and Ringo Starr wrote ‘Photograph’ on a yacht
George and Ringo co-wrote “Photograph,” making it possibly the most famous song with a writing credit from Ringo. During a 2023 interview with Billboard, Ringo discussed his memories of writing the tune with the “My Sweet Lord” singer. “We were on a yacht,” he recalled.
“We were at the Cannes Film Festival,” he added. “I’ve very little memory of whatever went on on that holiday.” The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most famous film festivals in the world, with movies from across the globe competing for an award called the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm...

It is fitting to find Fanny: The Right to Rock broadcast on PBS. The channel thrives on educational material, and director Bobbi Jo Hart’s documentary teaches many lessons. The film chronicles the career, and captures the reunion of Fanny, a group of musicians who changed the dynamics of rock in the 1970s. The lineup was unique, labels and management executives dubbed them the “female Beatles.” They made history as the first all-women rock band to release an LP with a major record label.
Originally called The Svelts and rebranded as Wild Honey, Fanny was formed in the mid-1960s in Sacramento, Calif., by three Filipina American musicians: sisters June and Jean Millington, on guitar and bass, and drummer Brie Darling. All three sang. When Darling had her daughter, Brandi, in 1968, Fanny added drummer Alice de Buhr, and roving keyboardist Nickey Barclay.
As was the fashion of the time, they lived in a band house.

In the summer of 1989, Paul McCartney hit the road for the first time as a solo artist. The Wings tours of the Seventies had featured only a smattering of Beatles songs, but this time around he was going to play nearly 20 a night. Pulling this off would require a guitarist who was capable of re-creating some very famous parts originally played by George Harrison and John Lennon. McCartney had his choice of big-name players for the job, but he went with Robbie McIntosh.

Fifty years ago, The Beatles released the Red and Blue Albums, officially titled 1962-1966 and 1967-1970. The anthologies came out on April 2, 1973, and became the foundation of the Beatles legend for the next few decades. Arguably the most influential greatest-hits albums in history. The gateway drug into the Beatles songbook for generations of fans. Their most crucial post-break-up albums, even if the Fab Four wanted nothing to do with them. But these weren’t cheesy samplers—they were double-vinyl shrines with iconic artwork, celebrating the mystique of John Lennon, Paul McCartney,...

Carly Simon has faced her fear of flying before. In 1971, she forced herself to board a plane to Los Angeles for her first-ever show at the Troubadour, where she opened for Cat Stevens. In 1989, she made another momentous trip there, this time to attend the Academy Awards, where “Let the River Run,” from Working Girl, won her a Best Original Song trophy. And this fall, she’ll return to L.A. for the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where she’s finally being inducted after being eligible since 1996.

It’s 3 p.m. on a beautiful Southern California day and Barbra Streisand is in bed. “I’m still in my nightie,” she says. “I love being in my bed.”
Of course, her dogs — Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett — are by her side. “They take their naps in my bed,” Streisand tells me on today’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.
Leave it to Streisand to work from her boudoir. She’s promoting her new album, “Release Me 2,” a collection of 10 recordings from the Egot winner’s vault that have never been released. Harry Nilsson is in the midst of an unlikely comeback. Netflix’s new hit series Russian Doll, in which a video-game developer dies over and over again on her 36th birthday, features his charming “Gotta Get Up” on endless loop. This has sparked interest in the Seventies singer-songwriter, and spawned articles informing viewers just who sings “that song” from the show.
But in his day, Nilsson was far from obscure. When the Beatles were asked who their favorite American artist was at a 1968 press conference, John Lennon and Paul McCartney...

4th Update: An eclectic mix of current and former moguls, executives, producers, directors, and of course actors attended the marquee pre-Oscar parties as well as famed artists, museum directors, fashion designers, music icons, and star athletes. Barry Diller’s luncheon for Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter Saturday was smaller than usual. That night, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ‘Night Before’ Oscar MPTF fundraiser avoided a union picket line. The agency parties dominated Thursday and Friday nights. CAA‘s was bigger than in past years when 200-300 guests crowded Bryan Lourd’s home. This time about 500 gathered at luxe Greystone Mansion for Old Hollywood glamour with men dressed ascots and women given gardenia corsages. WME‘s was held at Ari Emanuel’s home as usual and UTA‘s at Jim Berkus’ house again. ICM Partners‘ was held at the home of agent Hildy Gottlieb. Few of these names need introductions...

Veteran actress Jane Fonda is planning to walk down the aisle for the fourth time in 2011 after surviving a breast cancer scare, according to U.S. reports. The "Barbarella" star, 72, underwent surgery earlier this month to remove a lump from her breast after doctors discovered a small "non-invasive" tumor during a routine check-up.
