Squashing recent rumors Down Under, local Network Ten has confirmed that it won’t be bringing back Australian Idol. Once as popular in Australia as the U.S. version, Australian Idol launched the careers of several of the country’s current strong-selling pop artists, such as Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Damien Leith and Jessica Mauboy. And in February, Ten's program chief Beverley McGarvey said in public statements that a reboot of Australian Idol might still be in the cards. In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we remember the seven biggest social media blunders from the last 12 months.
1. Seven News
When Seven News deleted a comment with 32,000 likes on its Facebook page from Linda Goldspink-Lord accusing the network of intrusive reporting of her 13-year-old daughter Molly Lord’s accidental death near Wollongong, Nsw, social media uproar ensued, forcing the network to make a public apology.
2. Bruno Bouchet
Proving that it’s not just companies that can find themselves falling victim to the perils of social media, radio producer Bruno Bouchet was fired by 2DayFM after making jokes on Twitter about the tragic shooting massacre in Colorado. Bouchet’s defence was weak: “I didn’t realise how serious it was and I had had a few drinks”.
3. Ugg Australia
Infrequent Facebook monitoring landed shoe brand Ugg Australia in hot water after a user posted a pornographic image on the brand’s page.

The South Australian Tourism Commission has come under fire from MediaWatch for paying celebrities to tweet positive things about Kangaroo Island.

The revelation comes one month after Satc launched a TV-led ad campaign for Kangaroo Island, created by Adelaide agency Kwp!.
MediaWatch came across an email circulated from a publicist, which read:
I have been contacted by South Australian Tourism and they are looking for high profile celebrities with a high twitter following to tweet about Kangaroo Island. They will pay $750 plus Gst for one tweet. They don’t want to tweet to appear endorsed, rather an organic mention, injecting your own personality into the tweet.

The Australian singer, who is best known for songs such as 'Lift' and 'What About Me', was devastated when he found dad Neil had been crushed by a 600kg fuel tank at their family farm in 2001. His father was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Noll said in ABC documentary Family Confidential: "I drove in the gate with a mate and thought, 'Who's that on the ground?' and then reality hit. "Most people are aware of the story only vaguely, so I saw [making a documentary] as an opportunity to shed a bit of light on all the details. It was a chance to delve a bit deeper into the actual impact." After his dad's death, Noll said that he and his brothers fell out and the family farm had to be sold. He (more)...

Former Australian Idol winner Shannon Noll has apologised to fans after performing a gig in his home country while drunk.
The singer was appearing at the Country Music Channel (Cmc) Rocks The Snowys Festival on Saturday in Thredbo, New South Wales - but shocked gig-goers after slurring his words in a "virtually incoherent" manner, according to an eyewitness.
One festival-goer told the Sydney Daily Telegraph, "(Noll) couldn't stop rambling and raving on about how proud he was to be a country boy - he just wasn't making any sense.
"In the end people started booing and yelling out 'just sing' because he was making such a fool of himself."
In a statement issued to the newspaper on Monday, Noll says, "It is with great regret that I acknowledge, by my actions during my performance on Saturday night, that I have disappointed my fans, the organisers of Cmc Rocks The Snowys, and my band. I apologise unreservedly.
"As a result I am taking the necessary steps to ensure that it never happens again."
It's not the first alcohol-related slur for Noll - in December 2004 he was charged with drink-driving in New South Wales, fined Aus$765 ($710;GBP355) and was suspended for driving for nine months.
