Sam Fender, Little Simz, and Harry Styles are among the artists shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
The shortlist was unveiled in July, comprising 12 albums – from rap and jazz to indie and Cornish folk-rock – that will compete for the coveted award at a ceremony held this September.
This year’s entries are among the most eclectic in recent years. Little Simz is shortlisted for the second time with her critically adored Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, following on from her nod in 2019 for Grey Area.
Rock singer Sam Fender receives his debut nomination for his second LP, Seventeen Going Under, as does pop star Harry Styles, who has been shortlisted for his third studio album, Harry’s House. His record is arguably the most “pure pop” album to be shortlisted since Ed Sheeran’s controversial nomination in 2017.
First-time nominees make up most of this year’s nominees, following last year’s shortlist which included 10 debuts.

At this point, it’s a given that we’re living in the “golden age” of television; somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 new scripted series drop each year. With so much to choose from, that means TV can get daring, specific, and sometimes, weird as hell. Superheroes trapped inside an I Love Lucy pastiche? A creepy animatronic doll calling a murderous game of Red Light, Green Light? In the era of peak TV, grade-a oddity is only a mouse-click away.
But no show in 2021 is more weirdly specific — and specifically weird — than Centaurworld.

In today’s Global Bulletin, the deceasing average of ages in BAFTA TV actress nominees raises ageism concerns; Gary Barlow sets music show at the BBC; Red Productions hires Chloe Dunbar as head of development; the European Audiovisual Observatory and the U.K.’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport announce sustainability conference; “Game of Thrones” prequel finds home at Sky Atlantic; and a Stanley Tucci Italian culinary series will debut in June on CNN International.
An analysis conducted by the Acting Your Age Campaign has found that since 2000, the average age of BAFTA leading TV actresses nominees has reduced from 52 to 32. “The messaging of this downwards age-trend is clear and worrying,” the analysis states. “Gendered ageism is seemingly increasing.”
In 2021 alone, nominees Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”), Billie Piper (“I Hate Suzie”), Hayley Squires (“Adult Material”), Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”) and Letitia Wright (“Small Axe”) are aged between 22 and...

Madrid — Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory” took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Antonio Banderas) and Best Original Screenplay at the 34th Spanish Academy Goya Awards, as well as Best Editing, Original Music and Supporting Actress (Julieta Serrano).
Almodóvar’s night did have one blemish, however. On the red carpet ahead of the ceremony he accidentally let slip that actress Penelope Cruz will be handing out this year’s Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars, as she and Banderas did last time Almodóvar won, with 2000’s “All About my Mother.”
Saturday night’s ceremony ran like a marathon, with Almodóvar and Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” exchanging the lead back and forth over the 3.5 hour ceremony before “Pain and Glory” took the ceremony’s final three prizes, ending with seven awards while Amenábar’s Spanish Civil War epic notched five.

I was one of the many surprised that director Peter Jackson had decided to split the single, rather small, book of The Hobbit into three separate parts. However I think I speak for those doubting masses that Jackson has again shown a great understanding of the books and what makes them great. If the third in the series is anything like the first two, we are in for a treat. But what of those burning (pun intended) questions left when Smaug broke out of the mountain and made flight towards Lake-town that the trailer is yet to answer?
What have they done?
Words uttered by Bilbo himself as Smaug made haste to turn Lake-town into cinder. It doesn't seem much of a match between the pitifully guarded city of men and the bringer of fire and death, but there are faint glimpses of hope. Bard, who has that long haired...

Sky has won a High Court case after being accused of plagiarism with its show Must Be the Music.
Waif Productions co-founders Brian Wade and Geraldine Perry had accused the broadcaster of stealing their idea for the 2010 show, which saw contestants battling it out with original songs.
The duo alleged that Must Be the Music ripped off their format The Real Deal, which would see contestants performing original songs for a panel of songwriters, with the songs available to download after each episode.
However, Broadcast reports that Mr Justice Birss found in favour of Sky.
"Sky's evidence was cogent and taken as a whole presented a clear and persuasive picture," he said. "I find that Must Be the Music was created entirely independently of The Real Deal."
Meanwhile, a Sky spokesperson said: "We are pleased that the court has found that Must Be the Music was independently created, as we have maintained throughout.

Sky is being sued over its 2010 reality show Must Be the Music.
The competition - hosted by Fearne Cotton and judged by Jamie Cullum, Sharleen Spiteri and Dizzee Rascal - saw contestants battling it out with original songs, which were available to buy after the episode had aired.
The show ran for just one series before being dropped by Sky because of its cost and low ratings, with Cullum later suggesting that the format "wasn't cruel enough".
However, Waif Productions co-founders Brian Wade and Geraldine Perry have filed a lawsuit claiming that the format was their idea, Broadcast reports.
The duo say that they had the idea for a talent show featuring original compositions, with songwriter judges and the ability to download the songs after the show.

Bonnie Langford has become the latest celebrity to leave Dancing on Ice All-Stars.
Langford follows in the footsteps of Zaraah Abrahams, who exited the ITV competition at the end of last Sunday's (January 26) live show.
Langford and partner Andrei Lipanov had to battle it out in the skate-off with Sam Attwater and Vicky Ogden to decide who remained in the show.
Duel winners Kyran Bracken, Hayley Tamaddon, Ray Quinn and Gareth Gates were earlier given immunity from elimination.
Attwater performed to 'Don't Stop the Music' by Jamie Cullum in the skate-off, while Langford performed to 'Big Spender' in a bid to stay in the competition.
Judges Karen Barber, Ashley Roberts and Jason Gardiner all voted to save Attwater, while head judge Robin Cousins said he would have done the same.
Langford said on hearing the result: "These skaters are all wonderful. They're all half my age. I don't...

Jamie Cullum didn't think he stood a chance with Sophie Dahl when he first met her, the singer has revealed.
The musician married the former supermodel in January, 2010. The couple welcomed their first child Lyra the following year.
During an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, Cullum said that nerves didn't get in the way during their first meeting because he thought "there was literally no chance."
"When I met her for the first time I didn't think there was even a remote chance in hell, so I played it really cool which actually worked to my advantage," he explained.
The 34-year-old singer and Dahl have gotten attention for their striking height difference. Cullum admitted that people often mistake him for a younger man.
"I tried to buy Sophie a bottle of wine and I had my kids and I was wearing a suit.
