Once more we celebrate another remarkable year for British talent, as the 2023 British Independent Film Awards rolled out their red carpet this evening. We were there once again on the carpet to talk with the nominees and presenters, all to champion a fierce and fulsome chorus of new cinematic voices.

Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) with seven wins.
“All of Us Strangers” won best British independent film, Haigh won best director and best screenplay and Paul Mescal won best supporting performance, adding to its three craft awards, announced in November, for cinematography, editing and music supervision.
Best lead performance went to Mia McKenna-Bruce in Molly Manning Walker’s debut feature “How to Have Sex” and the film also won the other best supporting performance BIFA for Shaun Thomas, adding to its best casting win.
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay won best joint lead performance for “Femme,” which also won for make-up and hair design and costume design.

At a glance, there’s not much that I have in common with Ade – the lead character in Festival of Slaps. I immigrated to the UK with my Bulgarian family when I was 15, whereas he grew up in South London with his Nigerian parents. Yet, as I watched the film for the first time, the staggering similarities between our adolescent lives kept on coming – from the experience of navigating through traditional Eastern European and Pan-African (respectively) styles of upbringing, to desperately trying to immerse ourselves into a different culture without losing our identity in the process and, God forbid, disappointing our mothers. 'We Collide' has been named as the winner of the BMW Filmmaking Challenge in partnership with the BFI.The short film has been written and directed by Jason Bradbury and has been described as "pushing creative boundaries, while highlighting stories and characters underserved on screen with heart and tenderness".'We Collide' - produced by Cheri Darbon - embraces the spirit of queercore by exploring the power of the mosh pit and finding romance in unlikely places and was declared the unanimous winner by judges Ncuti Gatwa, Terri White and Asif Kapadia.The movie premiered alongside Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya's 'The Kitchen' at the closing night of the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday (15.10.23).In a statement, the judging panel said: "For us, it was unanimous: we were blown away by this film that illustrates the medium of short film, yet it could easily transition into a feature film.

Five titles shortlisted in initiative to support rising UK filmmakers.
Five UK projects have been shortlisted for the first BMW Filmmaking Challenge, which aims to support aspiring filmmakers and uncover fresh perspectives in the industry.
The initiative was launched earlier this year by Bafta winner Michaela Coel as part of a partnership between BMW and the BFI, and the five teams were shortlisted from 400 applications, awarding each a £10,000 production budget, access to 8K camera equipment and mentoring from Coel.
The shorts are Blades, Daytimers, Rice Ball, Hen Do and We Collide.

Netflix, in partnership with non-profit Creative UK, has unveiled the six teams and projects selected for Breakout, the filmmaking programme launched to discover and support talented up-and-coming storytellers in the UK, with participants including Screen Star of Tomorrow Helen Simmons and children’s TV star and presenter Kim Tserkezie.
Emerging filmmakers are given the funding and opportunity to advance their debut feature into development with the partnership and support of Netflix. The selected teams comprise talent who haven’t yet made a feature but whose work has garnered industry or public attention.
