One of the best running gags in "The Marvels" involves Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and the search for a perfect superhero name. Despite a fair amount of enthusiasm from Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), whose own alter ego was not-so-subtly inspired by her obsession with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica is seemingly uninterested in that particular hero perk. By the end of "The Marvels," she's still just Monica Rambeau — despite powering up in a major way, saving the universe from an errant wormhole, and ending up in an entirely new timeline.
Monica's arc across the Marvel Cinematic Universe is pretty different from her peers, but it largely works to her benefit. In the comics, Monica is a superhero who's burned through a number of superhero nicknames. She's been called Photon, Spectrum, and even Captain Marvel throughout her tenure on the page — and her ever-changing role in the comics seems to have...

The Marvels Box Office: Becomes The Biggest Failure Of 2023; Decoding Its Numbers. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka the MCU, has been struggling at the box office for the past few years, especially after Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Studios is one of the highest-grossing studios, but last year, it had very poor box office results due to The Marvel’s overall collections. It has suffered a loss with a massive margin. Keep scrolling to get all the deets.
The MCU movie featured Brie Larson once again as Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Besides Larson, the movie had Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, aka Ms Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau. Samuel L Jackson also returned as Nick Fury. South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon made his Hollywood debut with this Marvel flick, but that too could not save the MCU movie’s sinking ship.

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the biggest box office bombs of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list contains five titles and we are going to reveal them to you, as well as all the relevant numbers. Long story short, out of the five titles on this list, four belong to Disney/MCU and one to Warner, so it seems that Disney is undoubtedly the biggest loser of 2023, especially since some of the titles in question are major ones. Now, let us start!

Disney normally finds itself at the top of the box office rankings, thanks to its ownership of well-known franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, but last year was an exception. Recently, Deadline claimed that Disney was involved in four of the top five box office bombs of 2023. The company had numerous setbacks that caused its fortunes to plummet. However, The Marvels was one of the most surprising misfires.
The Marvels
Who could have predicted that Brie Larson’s last MCU outing would end in a financial letdown, causing more of a tremor than even the Dceu’s The Flash?
Yes, you read that right. As unbelievable as it may seem, Nia DaCosta’s flick endured a staggering net loss of $237 million, outdoing the Ezra Miller starrer. Speaking about the latter, it even sprinted away from the spotlight with a $155 million shortfall.

2023 wasn't a good year for superhero movies, with the vast majority of them drawing negative reviews and poor box office returns. One of the most shocking flops, however, was The Marvels.
Captain Marvel made over $1 billion in 2019 and the follow-up saw Carol Danvers paired up with WandaVision's Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel's title character. Now, Deadline has crunched the numbers and revealed that The Marvels' $206.1 million global box office haul was worse than we realised.
According to the trade, when all is said and done, the movie made a net loss of $237 million. It's no wonder then that Disney CEO Bob Iger has said Marvel Studios will begin moving away from developing unnecessary sequels.
As for what the future holds in store for these characters, it's hard to say.
Monica will clearly be part of a future Multiversal story after landing in the same reality as the X-Men,...

Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel is a movie star. "The Marvels" has been cited as another sign of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fall from dominance, but everyone loves young actor Iman Vellani as this spunky heroine. /Film even named Kamala the best movie hero of 2023 and proclaimed her the future of the MCU.
Of course, Kamala comes from Marvel Comics and was co-created by G. Willow Wilson, Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie. The comics made a bizarre move of synergy in 2023; between Kamala's Disney+ show "Ms. Marvel" and the theatrical run of "The Marvels," she heroically dies in "Amazing Spider-Man" #26 (by Zeb Wells and John Romita Jr.), published in May 2023.
Wells' "Amazing Spider-Man" isn't exactly a fan-favorite (the stink of breaking up Peter and Mj has carried across his run) and this was a low point. It was the cheapest of cheap melodrama and Kamala perished while pulling guest star duty.

Unlike their golden run on the big screen till phase 3, Marvel didn’t quite replicate its huge success on the small screen, with most of the Disney Plus MCU shows earning less-than-stellar reception. While fans have complained about MCU’s recent catalog being bloated following the abundance of TV shows, Marvel has also abandoned an overwhelming number of TV shows over the years.
This involves several renowned superheroes, including a Captain Britain show, which was greenlit long before the rise of Disney Plus and MCU TV shows.

Back in 2016, rumors regarding a Captain Britain show being in the early stages of development emerged. Poster artist Clara McAvoy claimed she was being paid to do a promo poster for it, assuring fans an official announcement might be heading our way in early 2017 or late 2016. Unfortunately, it never happened, leading many to speculate Marvel might have put the kibosh on it.

Marvel Studios’ animated series X-Men ’97, created by Beau DeMayo, is a revival of 1992’s successful series X-Men: The Animated Series, which concluded its five-season run in 1997. Picking up where the original series left off, the 2024 series is going to depict X-Men facing challenges following the loss of their leader, Professor X.
X-Men ’97 is the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios since the studios regained the rights to the characters for movies and television. Vice President of Animation at Marvel Studios, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, had mentioned that the people involved with the revival of 1992’s series were fans of the show and knew exactly how the story for the 2024 series would pick up. Brad Winderbaum, however, revealed one of their plans for the series that could probably make fans happy.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" to follow.
Love is in the air on "X-Men '97" with Rogue and ... Magneto??! Apparently, the two have a history. Now that Magneto has joined the X-Men, old feelings are surfacing.
In episode 2, "Mutant Liberation Begins," the pair share a private chat dancing around their history; Magneto tells Rogue he made a mistake by shutting Charles Xavier out (with a psychic-blocking helmet and all), saying he should've kept people who cared for him close — implicitly including Rogue too. She says she wants to keep their past buried, but at the episode's end, they meet in private again; apparently, Magneto's power can nullify Rogue's deadly touch, so she can experience intimacy with him that she can't with anyone else. A heartbroken Gambit spots Rogue exiting Magneto's office.
The third and most recent episode, "Fire Made Flesh," continued the teasing. Rogue/Magneto apparently haven't admitted the connection to their comrades,...

‘The Marvels’ is the latest movie in the MCU. It continues Carol Danvers’ story and puts a spotlight on Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, who became notable characters in Phase 4 of the MCU.
Despite its importance for the future of the cinematic universe, ‘The Marvels’ didn’t do well at the box office. Carol Danvers dealt with her issues with the Kree, Monica Rambeau got stuck in a parallel universe, hinting at future X-Men developments, and Kamala Khan was seen recruiting the next generation of Avengers for the upcoming ‘Young Avengers’ project. However, Carol Danvers didn’t seem to have a clear purpose by the end of the movie.
Recently, there have been rumors circulating that ‘Captain Marvel 3’ might not happen because the studio is prioritizing guaranteed successes. So, what could happen to one of the strongest Avengers? According to Alex Perez, a well-known source of leaks, Carol will have...

Ever since the release of the last MCU film, which was none other than the infamous The Marvels, there have been rumors going around that claimed actress Brie Larson’s days as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, had come to an end.
But at the time, there were no concrete pieces of evidence to support these claims, and as new reports started to roll in, it seemed less likely that the character or the actress was going anywhere.
Brie Larson in and as Captain Marvel
As new information has started to flow in, it seems like Captain Marvel may have a lot more to do in the franchise in the future. New insider reports claim Danvers may seek the help of Sorcerer Supreme Wong as well as Bruce Banner to help understand the powers of The Quantum Bands while also attempting to bring back Monica Rambeau to the main MCU universe.

From Disney darling to Academy Award winner, Brie Larson has carved a unique path in Hollywood. At just 30 years old, she has already acted in various movies, from small independent ones to big blockbusters. She even tried her hand at directing, with projects such as The Arm (2012), Weighting (2013), Unicorn Store (2017), The Dew Project (2021).
Her latest movie is The Marvels, in which she played Captain Marvel again. However, it didn’t perform well, partly due to criticism from fans who disliked the story or the villain. Negative reviews further compounded the issue, and there were problems with promoting the movie because of actor strikes.

“True Detective: Night Country” had all the ingredients necessary to rope in viewers. It was the first new season of HBO’s Emmy-winning crime anthology in five years. It was also the first to feature women as its protagonists. And it marked two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster’s first foray into television in nearly half a century. But what made this latest season truly notable was the breakout and Emmy-worthy performance delivered by Kali Reis — in only her third acting role — as Evangeline Navarro, a determined but haunted Alaskan trooper investigating a mysterious homicide and struggling with her past and her culture.

While The Marvels may not have been the blockbuster sequel that Marvel Studios was hoping for, it did contain one element that had fans talking: a cameo by none other than Beast of the X-Men. The reveal was a big surprise to audiences, even Teyonah Parris, who was actually in the scene but had no idea she would be sharing the screen with the iconic X-Men character.
In The Marvels‘ mid-credits scene, Monica Rambeau (Parris) wakes up in a hospital bed to find an alternate version of her mother as well as X-Men’s Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast. Although the character was a digital creation this time around, he was voiced by Kelsey Grammer, who played the role in X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
While chatting with Et’s Ash Crossan, Parris revealed she was just as surprised as everyone else when Beast appeared on screen.

Ever since the Marvel Cinematic Universe concluded the Thanos chapter with Avengers: Endgame, the franchise has witnessed significant changes. From then on, not every project garnered acclaim from the public, leading many to get disappointed with what they were being served. The Marvels is an example that was a great disaster at the box office, leaving many to wonder about its future.

The Marvels’ Actor Teyonah Parris ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The Marvels movie was released in November 2023 and didn’t receive a great response from critics and fans alike. It was the third Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie of 2023 after Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 were released. The Nia DaCosta directorial stars Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Parris, Zawe Ashton, Lashana Lynch, Park Seo-joon, and others.
The superhero film brought together Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and a grown-up Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parrish) after Captain Marvel (2019). Even Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) joins the force to fight against a new space villain, Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). Despite all of this, The Marvels failed to impress the audience. However, what got everyone’s attention was the post-credits scene.
In The Marvels’ post-credit scene, Monica gets pushed into another universe. She meets her mom, Maria Rambeau, at the hospital.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has just about the perfect cast for each and every comic book character they have brought to life. Yet that does not mean that the ‘perfect actors’ would want to continue playing their roles forever (clue Dave Bautista as Drax) and for someone like Brie Larson, who delivered Marvel’s first true bomb in years, the actress must certainly be looking to move outside the realms of the MCU.

Even though the actress has been on numerous occasions described as the perfect Captain Marvel, her recent ambiguous answers related to her future with Marvel seem to hint she might have already said goodbye to her fan-favorite role.

Actress Brie Larson became a household name with her portrayal of Carol Danvers a.k.a., Captain Marvel in Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress first appeared as Captain Marvel in 2019’s Captain Marvel, which marked the studio’s first female-led film. The movie became the first female-led superhero movie to pass the billion-dollar mark.
Larson reprised her role in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and then for 2023’s The Marvels which served as the sequel to Captain Marvel. The Marvels underperformed at the box office and received a mixed response from the audience and critics. Brie Larson’s recent response upon her return as Danvers had her fans question her character’s treatment in the MCU.

The Marvels starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris, was a massive disappointment at the box office. The highly anticipated film that was touted to be the embodiment of feminine power, ended up being a damp squib with fans and critics brutally panning the narrative. This was an unfortunate result after the first film achieved success at the box office.

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel could have the potential solution for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it navigates a challenging landscape marked by dwindling audience reception and uncertainty. With the exit of Jonathan Majors from his role as Kang the Conqueror, a planned overarching villain, Marvel Studios faces the daunting task of redefining its narrative trajectory.

However, amidst these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope found in a comic arc revolving around the Kree warrior, where Vox Supreme abducts her and assigns her the task of eliminating the Avengers within a tight deadline of twenty-four hours. Stars: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh | Written by Nia DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik | Directed by Nia DaCosta
Directed by Nia DaCosta (who helmed the recent Candyman remake), The Marvels is the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and a direct sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), which introduced Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel. It’s also a continuation of the events of both the Ms Marvel TV show (2022), which introduced Iman Vellani as Pakistani-American New Jersey teen superhero Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel, and WandaVision, which showed Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) getting light-based superpowers of her own.
The plot is essentially a superhero team-up story, of the type beloved by comics fans everywhere. It begins with Kree revolutionary leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) discovering a cosmic bangle that is identical to the one that gives Kamala her powers.

The premise of "Captain Marvel" was borne out of unique, if limiting, circumstances. The film was the 21st entry in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, and the first to put a female hero center stage. Perhaps more than any MCU film that'd preceded it, "Captain Marvel" had a complicated brief to adhere to. It was introducing one of the most prolific heroes in Marvel history at a veritable late point in the franchise, just before "Avengers: Endgame" brought about the end of the Infinity Saga. "Captain Marvel" also needed to establish the title heroine as someone with a history, all while avoiding a decades' worth of continuity concerns.
Where had Carol Danvers been while the Avengers defended an alien attack, or assembled against Thanos in "Infinity War"? "Captain Marvel" had a bevy of questions to answer — or, more accurately, to avoid — and according to insider book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,...

The Marvels is now available to watch on Disney+, and while the movie wasn’t the project that was able to pull Marvel Studios out of the fire, it tried to entice the viewers at the eleventh hour that something major was coming when the final teaser stated, “Be there for the moment that changes everything.” Spoiler for those who haven’t seen it, but the post-credits scene features Kelsey Grammer reprising his role as Beast from the X-Men movies. Something that may or may not be addressed in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, according to Zawe Ashton, who played the big baddie Dar-Benn in the film, there was another big moment that was to take place in the ending of the movie.

The Marvels had an alternate ending ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The Marvels is the last MCU movie of 2023 to release in theatres. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel, and Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta, who co-wrote it with Megan McDonnel and Elissa Karasik.
The Brie Larson starrer received few positive reviews from the audience and critics. It even failed to mint good numbers at the box office. The MCU film was released on Disney+ a week ago, and the reception wasn’t exciting. However, Zawe Ashton, who played the villain, has made a big revelation.
The Marvels’ Alternate Ending
Zawe revealed The Marvels’ alternate ending, almost killing Brie’s Captain Marvel. Yes, you read it right. Instead of Monica Rambeau getting pushed to another universe, Carol Danvers would combust along with Dar-Benn.

Captain Marvel is a superhero who has gone through some tumultuous times. The character otherwise known as Carol Danvers might be an A-lister now, but it took a long time to grant her the status she's since become synonymous with. When she first debuted in "Marvel Super-Heroes" #13 back in 1987, Carol was known as Ms. Marvel. She was created, in part, to capitalize on the women's liberation movement that had been taking the country by storm for nearly 20 years — but the effects of the movement wouldn't create lasting change for her character for a while.
Carol's bizarre journey was recently catalogued in the insider book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios." It didn't take long for her to get her own solo series, "Ms. Marvel," in the late '70s, but she was frequently written by men, few of whom fully understood the feminist movement they were meant to be embodying.

This post contains spoilers for The Marvels.
For a variety of reasons, The Marvels left a lot of lingering questions in the minds of viewers. One of the biggest concerns the movie’s MacGuffin itself, the bangle that the villain Dar-Benn uses to fight the heroes and restore her home planet Hala.
In the climactic scene of The Marvels, the central trio defeats Dar-Benn and Ms. Marvel takes her bangle, pairing it to one she received from her grandmother. But when Kamala returns to Earth and hugs her parents at the end of the movie, she’s only wearing one bangle. She doesn’t explain what happened to its pair, and instead focuses on the loss of Monica Rambeau, now stuck in the X-Men universe for some reason.
For such an important item, the bangle doesn’t get the attention it deserves from The Marvels. However, viewers paying attention will...

Do you remember the show "Raising Dad"? The 2001-2002 single-season series from The WB grabbed my attention because it was another show starring "Full House" star Bob Saget, but would also serve as the gateway to two actors who would become all-time favorites of mine: Kat Dennings and Brie Larson. When it was announced that the latter was going to appear in "Fast X," I couldn't resist bringing up her history of playing a hot rodder in the Disney Channel Original Movie "Right on Track," and I'm always elated when people realize that Larson is one of the members of the Six Chicks clique in "13 Going on 30" and one of the popular girls in "Sleepover."

After a disappointing stint in cinemas, The Marvels is available to buy and rent on digital from 16th January.
The Marvels, a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, will finally be available to buy and rent from 16th January. The film, starring Brie Larson, originally hit cinemas in November.
Marvel had a pretty abysmal 2023. Out of their slate, only Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 managed to make an appearance in the top 10 highest grossing films of the year and Loki was the only other Marvel project that was critically acclaimed.
The Marvels was perhaps the most disappointing project for the megastudio. The sequel failed to capture the hearts or butts of audiences, scoring middling or negative reviews and grossing only $205 million worldwide. That’s a lot of money still, but not what Marvel was after.
Much of the blame fell (a little unfairly) on director Nia DaCosta, but Disney’s...

The Marvels is almost ready to fly higher, further, and faster on Digital and Blu-ray! The Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Teyona Parris (Captain Monica Rambeau), and Eman Velani (Ms. Marvel) takes flight on Apple TV+ and Prime Video beginning on January 16, 2024, and on Blu-ray and DVD on February 13.
The digital and physical releases of The Marvels pack a punch with exclusive bonus content, including deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and an audio commentary from co-writer/director Nia DaCosta and VFX Supervisor Tara DeMarco.
While The Marvels is the lowest-grossing installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s worth noting that many who saw the film had a blast and enjoyed the adventure’s lighter tone and shorter runtime. The Marvels banked $197 million worldwide, becoming a casualty of the SAG-AFTRA strike restrictions preventing the cast from giving the film a proper promotional lead-in.

2023 will forever be remembered as the year the superhero bubble finally popped. While multiple DC Comics films fell flat on their face at the box office over those 12 months, it was the "The Marvels" and its shockingly poor commercial performance that made it clear: the Marvel Cinematic Universe can no longer coast by on the sheer staying power of the brand.
Fortunately, there was some good news to report on that front. "The Marvels" star and ever-enthusiastic Kamala Khan actor Iman Vellani emerged fully unscathed from the wreckage, ensuring the franchise is in safe hands going forward. The film around her also has its fair share of defenders, who found writer/director Nia DaCosta's cosmic superhero adventure to be one heck of a good time despite all the obvious behind-the-scene turmoil that DaCosta clearly had to navigate while making it. That's our polite way of telling Disney CEO Bob Iger...

For more than a decade, there seemed to be three absolutes in Hollywood: death, taxes, and superhero movies doing big business. The genre of capes and cowls looked as invincible as many of its protagonists, soaring above the rest of the industry’s slings and arrows, and always landing on its feet in a heroic pose. This status quo arguably goes back nearly a quarter century, to when Hugh Jackman first donned a pair of claws and Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire made you believe a boy could swing.
Still, for most moviegoers, the genre has long been synonymous with one production house: Marvel Studios, which for the last 15 years would at least hit a single when it went up to bat (albeit 2021’s The Eternals might have been more a walk to base). That perception changed dramatically in 2023, though, when not one, not two, not three, but six superhero movies underperformed or outright flopped,...

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" ended with a new team of Guardians led by Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper). One of their number was Phyla (Kai Zen), a young white-haired girl and freed test subject of evil geneticist the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).
If you're a comics fan, then yes, you likely realized that this was indeed the Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of the hero Phyla-Vell. If you only watch the movies, you're still thinking (to quote Korath the Pursuer), "Who?!" Well, let me explain.
In the comics, Phyla is the daughter of Captain Marvel — the alien warrior Mar-Vell, not Carol Danvers. Annette Benning played a female version of Mar-Vell in 2019's "Captain Marvel," but the character is traditionally male. Mar-Vell and his progeny are Kree, the imperious race to which "Guardians of the Galaxy" villain Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) belonged. The Kree have both blue and pink-shaded skin...
