Marking his directorial debut, director Misan Harriman opens The After with a familiar sight. Dayo (David Oyelowo) is a workaholic father who wears a suit and talks business on the phone, even while with his daughter. In this intense short film, a grieving rideshare driver picks up a passenger who helps him confront the past.
The film is directed by Misan Harriman and, stars David Oyelowo, Jessica Plummer and Amelie Dokubo.
An interesting short that proves it does not require to be feature length to tell a full story. In its approximately 19 minutes running time, it manages to bring into the arena, besides the protagonist, the grieving Dayo, a number of characters who are presented to us as his passengers. Capturing short scenes of their rides in his car, and providing telling moments through their conversations, or their silences, this short is quite rich in characterizations, and offshoots for new stories to explore. All the while we follow Dayo’s journey where he deals with an excruciating suffering, grieving his deceased wife and child.
