Prior to performing a swerving version of Lucinda Williams’ “Drunken Angel” for an intimate dinner party in Nashville on Monday night, Jason Isbell remarked how some songwriters just can’t write a good song anymore. But Williams, he said, was so unfailingly talented that she could restart her career right now and in 10 years “we’d be right back here.” Here was the BMI Troubadour Award celebration, which honored Williams — the first woman to receive the award — for decades of songwriting greatness.

Brian Tyler, composer of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” was named a BMI Icon at Wednesday night’s 38th annual Broadcast Music Inc. Film, TV and Visual Media Awards in Beverly Hills.
Tyler is among the top 10 highest-grossing film composers of all time. His other films have included “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Rambo,” “Charlie’s Angels” and the recent reboot of “Scream.” His TV credits include “Yellowstone,” “1883,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “Transformers: Prime.” He also wrote the Formula One racing theme and, as his alter ego Madsonik, has written and produced several songs with a contemporary edge.
“It’s just mind-blowing to now be included in that pantheon of talent,” Tyler told Variety, referring to the many previous recipients of the performing-rights organization’s highest accolade, including John Williams, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat and Terence Blanchard.

In March, Doreen Ringer-Ross, then vice president of creative relations at the music company BMI, posted a picture of a pool gathering in China on Facebook. At the time, Covid-19, which was first identified in the Chinese city of Wuhan, was beginning to spread around the world, and some Chinese Americans were facing a xenophobic backlash via harassment and even physical violence. The photo showed a pool packed with people. “Couldn’t deal with it then,” Ringer-Ross wrote in the caption. “Now just makes me scream and recoil.” Several other...

Don’t stop til you get enough. Bmi and the Michael Jackson estate have extended their long-term deal for rights to the King of Pop’s catalog.
This deal continues the relationship between Jackson and the performance rights group that began in 1979. The estate and Bmi most recently renewed the deal in 2014.
“Michael first signed with Bmi in the nascent stage of his solo career, and Bmi has never wavered in its commitment to his extraordinary talent,” said John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Jackson estate. “This is a significant agreement, commensurate with the robust growth of interest in his music and his enduring contribution to the culture.”
Added Bmi President and CEO Mike O’Neill: “The influence of Michael Jackson’s revolutionary music is undeniable. We are extremely pleased that his estate continues to entrust Bmi to represent his extraordinary catalog.”
