J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth mythology includes several epic and powerful love stories. Aragorn and Arwen are probably the best known thanks to the Lord of the Rings films, plus Sam and Rosie get married at the end, and the extended editions also feature Éowyn and Faramir’s relationship, though that one was a bit rushed even in the books. But book fans also know the stories of Tuor and Idril, Elwing and Eärendil, and the rather more tragic story of Aegnor and Andreth, among others.
The love story that meant the most to Tolkien himself, though, was the story of Beren and Lúthien, which was directly inspired by the writer’s own life.
The story of Beren and Lúthien is one of very few stories about the First and Second Ages of Middle-earth told, in a brief and summarized form, in The Lord of the Rings itself. Fuller versions can...

Stars: Nicolas Hoult, Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, Craig Roberts, Harry Gilby, Laura Donnelly, Nia Gwynne, Pam Ferris | Written by David Gleeson, Stephen Beresford | Directed by Dome Karukoski
Tolkien, directed by Dome Karukoski, stars Nicolas Hoult as the titular character J.R.R. Tolkien. From his orphan beginnings through his rise in literature societies Britain and eventually the breadcrumb origins of his famed middle earth magnum opus The Lord of the Rings, he would eventually write. Tolkien, unfortunately, is a much-misaligned biopic that’s an ultra-conventional bore.
The performances no doubt intrigue with Hoult impressing but the actor along with Collins, both have nothing to do with such flat and generic material. Hoult showcases some terrific talent here. Especially in the latter half of the film. His emotional range is strong and as an actor, Hoult is still continuing to progressively hone his craft, and here is no different. He still struggles to...

Perhaps it wouldn’t be hyperbolic to say that J.R.R. Tolkien may be the most influential writer of the modern era. His works may be set in fantasy, but the inspiration he drew from was a rich life that saw both the best and worst of humanity. From his real life love story with Edith Bratt, to the terrors he faced as an enlisted man, Tolkien brought his own history to fantastical life with…...

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) wrote The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, so you’re probably stoked for the movie version of his life, hoping it’ll be filled to bursting with adventure, brain-teasing fantasy and rock-’em-sock-’em action just like the books and the movies Peter Jackson directed into box-office and Oscar glory. Right?
Sorry, fans, here comes the buzzkill. Tolkien — pronounced toll-keen as the film takes great pains to inform us — is a bit of a stiff as cinema, rich in atmospherics but starved for the human...

Inert biopics line the multiplex like gravestones, but seldom are they as dead on arrival as Tolkien. Depicting the author and philologist’s young adulthood and experience in World War I before creating The Hobbit, Dome Karukoski’s film isn’t just another dull cookie cutter telling of a famous figure. It’s perhaps a new gold standard of “Wikipedia entry as high school book report as prestige picture” malaise, the low bar to compare passable boring films. “At least it’s not Tolkien.”
Nicholas Hoult stars as the eponymoius J.R.R. Tolkien, struggling to overcome his social and fiscal limitations while at Oxford. He is part of a foursome of tightly knit male friends and artists, each with class stature above his own. Meanwhile he sacrifices his love for fellow orphan Edith Bratt (Lily Collins) in order to secure his future. The outbreak of the war casts all of this asunder,...

“Game of Thrones” fans have a lot to thank J.R.R. Tolkien for.
“Thrones” author George R.R. Martin, along with stars Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins and director Dome Karukoski, discussed their personal connections to Tolkien and his “Lord of the Rings” series on the red carpet — or more accurately, the green carpet (a nod to the author’s verdant Middle Earth) — at the premiere of biographical film “Tolkien” on Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Martin told Variety, “He made me love the form he created — epic fantasy. He redefined fantasy of everything that had been before.” He said that Tolkien’s epic trilogy format influenced “Game of Thrones.” Martin joked, “I started doing a trilogy called ‘Game of Thrones.’ Now my trilogy is seven books — if I finish the last two.”

Dome Karukoski‘s “Tolkien,” a new biopic about the celebrated author of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” throws into sharp relief the hitherto unexplored tragedy of the artist’s life. Imagine it: you’re one of the great artists of the 20th century, and yet your own story is embarrassingly contrived.
At least, that’s what we can glean from “Tolkien,” a biopic that hits so many familiar notes that it’s practically a cover song. It’s the ceaseless parade of foreshadowing, suggesting that every microscopic part of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels was based on a specific, real-life event. It reduces everyone Tolkien knew to supporting players in someone else’s shameless “great man” narrative. If you were trying to produce a parody of what a Tolkien biopic would look like, you’d get the exact same film.

The estate of J.R.R. Tolkien issued a statement earlier this month saying it did not “approve” nor “endorse” Dome Karukoski’s biopic “Tolkien,” starring Nicholas Hoult as the “Lord of the Rings” author and Lily Collins as his wife, Edith Bratt. However, at a post-screening Q&A in New York City May 1 (conducted by this writer), Karukoski said not working with the Tolkien estate proved to be a creative benefit.
“Honestly, you try not to work with the estate for reasons obvious,” Karukoski said. “Even if it would be out of kindness to ask the estate, you start servicing them, they become your friends. You shouldn’t mess with the estate, so the film can exist purely for your own reasons and your own feelings about the characters. We did very, very thorough research, we understand these characters, and the emotional truth of them is very true. To dig out...

Tolkien is a familiar if fittingly romantic biopic about a man seeing one world give way to another, both in his head and otherwise.
A world on fire, forests in ruins, and young lads off on what seems like a grand adventure but turns into a life-altering tragedy. These are just a few of the aspects that John Ronald Reuel Tolkien used to define our modern understanding of high-fantasy in the last hundred years. They’re present in The Hobbit and defining in The Lord of the Rings. However, they were also overwhelming in his own life as he came of age among the last guard of the British Empire. When Tolkien entered Oxford on a scholarship in 1911 to study classics (before wisely changing to English language and literature), his own struggles were in the backdrop of an old world with one foot still firmly set in the 19th century...

This refreshing origins story, starring Nicholas Hoult, traces the early life of Jrr Tolkien as he makes friends at Oxford, finds love and faces the horror of war
A sweet innocence and high-mindedness pervade this movie from screenwriters David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford and the Finnish director Dome Karukoski. It’s about the early life of Jrr Tolkien – who, like Cs Lewis, became a staggeringly successful author but remained an unworldly Oxford don to the end of his days, never dreaming of the kind of mega-celebrity and super-wealth that writers such as Jk Rowling or George Rr Martin enjoy.
Nicholas Hoult plays the doe-eyed young John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, an orphaned boy at King Edward’s School, Birmingham, with a brilliant facility for languages who makes three good friends there (his “fellowship”) and falls shyly in love with the young woman at his boarding house, Edith Bratt (Lily Collins), but who...

You might be a massive fan of the Lord of the Rings series, whether the books or the film adaptations, but how well do you know the original novels' author, J.R.R. Tolkien? If your answer is "not very well," then the upcoming biopic about the writer's life, aptly titled Tolkien, needs to be on your must-watch list.
The film stars Nicholas Hoult as a younger version of the titular writer, who pulls inspiration for his stories from his formative years as an orphan, his tight-knit friendship with a group of fellow outcasts at school, his intense love of language, and his experience fighting in World War I. But it's his "beautiful romance" with Edith Bratt (Lily Collins) that truly shapes his now-iconic tale.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s family and the Tolkien Estate have come forward to disavow the upcoming Fox Searchlight biopic that stars “X-Men” actor Nicholas Hoult as the iconic “Lord of the Rings” author. The film, titled “Tolkien,” is set for release next month. A statement released by both parties says they want to “make clear that they did not approve of, authorize, or participate in the making” of the film and “they do not endorse it or its content in any way.” Tolkien’s family and the Tolkien Estate have not seen the movie but have long turned down agreeing to any official biopics.
“Tolkien” is directed by Dome Karukoski, the Finnish filmmaker behind “The Grump” and “Tom of Finland,” and features a script written by David Gleeson (“Cowboys and Aliens”) and Stephen Beresford (“Pride”). Hoult stars in the title role, while Lily Collins plays Tolkien’s lifelong love and wife Edith Bratt.

War, dragons, camaraderie and romance – it’s too soon for another Game of Thrones trailer, so it’s gotta be Tolkien. Fox Searchlight released a second trailer for the upcoming biopic today, giving even more clues about the approach the film will take in chronicling both the life and the imagination of the groundbreaking author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.
The new trailer begins with a direct-to-camera address from stars Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins – he plays young John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and she’s Edith Bratt, the woman and muse who’ll become the author’s wife. Two things to note: Hoult, and so Fox Searchlight, intentionally or unintentionally seem to wade into the Spielberg-Netflix brouhaha. “We’re so grateful to be part of this project,” Hoult says, “and we can’t wait for you to see it on the big screen.”

Are you a “Lord of the Rings” fan wondering where writer J.R.R. Tolkien found the inspiration to come up with Frodo, Sauron, and the entirety of Middle Earth? If you answered yes, then Fox Searchlight’s upcoming biographical drama “Tolkien” is the movie to see this summer movie season. Giving the “Rings” author the “Finding Neverland” and “Goodbye Christopher Robin” treatment, “Tolkien” looks at the life of the writer before he created Middle Earth.
The official synopsis from Fox Searchlight reads: “‘Tolkien’ explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the ‘fellowship’ apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.”

"This is more than just a friendship, it's an alliance. An invincible alliance." Fox Searchlight has debuted the full-length official trailer for Tolkien, the biopic film about beloved author J.R.R. Tolkien (in full: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien), who grew up in both South Africa and Birmingham, England. This trailer follows a brief teaser last month, and the film opens this summer. Nicholas Hoult stars as Tolkien, focusing on his formative years at Pembroke College and as a soldier in World War I, and how those events influenced his work. The full cast includes Lily Collins as his great love Edith Bratt, along with Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, Laura Donnelly, Genevieve O'Reilly, Pam Ferris, and Derek Jacobi. This is a tremendous trailer, playing up the profoundness of his writing (and his Lord of the Rings stories). Maybe I'm just a sucker for this kind of filmmaking,...

Whether it’s J.M. Barrie and “Finding Neverland” or A. A. Milne and “Goodbye Christopher Robin,” no famous author is safe from the biopic treatment in which the origins of his or her greatest literary work is contextualized in their personal lives. Next up in the genre is J. R. R. Tolkien, the English writer who created Middle Earth and wrote the massively successful “The Lord of the Rings” franchise and “The Hobbit,” among other notable works like “The Silmarillion.”

Fox Searchlight’s Tolkien about the legendary Lord of the Rings author will open in theaters on May 10.
The movie, directed by Dome Karukoski, and starring Nicholas Hoult as J.R.R. Tolkien and Lily Collins as his muse and wife Edith Bratt, explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.
David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford wrote Tolkien. Peter Chernin produces through his Chernin Entertainment label, with Jenno Topping, David Ready, and Kris Thykier.
Searchlight tends to plant a flag in the early summer specialty marketplace. We hear Tolkien, given the author’s mass appeal, will likely not be a platform release, rather potentially a wider...

Without a doubt, J.R.R. Tolkien has become one of the most iconic and literary figures in history. This is the man who, in the wake of The Lord of the Rings, influenced generations of fantasy authors, and established many of the tropes we see in the genre today. It is also through his work that we got the acclaimed Lord of the Rings trilogy from director Peter Jackson, which is widely considered to be a hallmark of fantasy cinema — and cinema in general.
Sure, J.R.R. Tolkien may not have known how to create dramatic tension if his life depended on it, but there is no denying the rich, textured world he created with Middle-earth. If you’re like this geek, then you’ve pored over those Blu-ray special features that chronicled the creation of this world in print form. It was only a matter of time that the story behind...

I'm not familiar with the work of British director James Strong (he's directed TV shows like Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Gracepoint, and Broadchurch), but I suspect I'll get my introduction to his work with his newest film project. The Hollywood Reporter says that Strong is set to direct Middle Earth, a biopic of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings writer J.R.R. Tolkien.
The film will chart the tumultuous events that inspired him to pen Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies: when war broke out in 1914, disrupting his Oxford life with his wife Edith Bratt, Tolkien embarked on four years of battle, hardship, and new friendships, which served to shape his imagination and start him on the path to Middle Earth.
I've been watching the bonus features of the Lotr trilogy extended editions over the past few weeks and learned a lot about Tolkien's life and the...

Middle Earth, the story of the early life of Lord Of The Rings author J R R Tolkien, has recruited James Strong to direct...
The planned movie biopic of J R R Tolkien is now moving ahead, with the news that James Strong has signed up to direct the project.
The film is going by the name of Middle Earth, and Strong comes to the film off the back of small screen successes Broadchurch and United. He’s also an experienced Doctor Who director too, with stories such as Voyage Of The Damned and Planet Of The Dead to his name, along with the Cyberwoman instalment of Torchwood.
Angus Fletcher has penned the script for Middle Earth, and it’s set to tell the story of the early years of Tolkien, and what gave him the inspiration for stories such as The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Nicholas Hoult stars in Tolkien, a biopic focusing on the celebrated author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
The major works of John Ronald Reuel (J.R.R.) Tolkien were adapted in an epic manner in contemporary film by director Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and, years later, in The Hobbit Trilogy, with grandiose (allegedly exorbitant) television series plans now in the works over at Amazon Studios. Yet, an upcoming biopic will cover another story connected to the influential author, namely his own life story.
While the biopic, titled Tolkien, stayed in the pipeline for a few years, things finally came together with director Dome Karukoski, who helmed this movie about the mind that made Middle-earth, which is headlined by Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins.
