James Patterson and investigative journalist Vicky Ward are working to turn the tragic deaths of students Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Kaylee Goncalves into a non-fiction title.
In November 2022, the four students at the University of Idaho were violently killed in their homes. Dubbed the “Moscow Murders,” the infamous attack gained a rapid following online as internet sleuths on Reddit, Twitter and other platforms gathered to try and find the killer and his motive.
The book will recount the violence that rattled the college town and the subsequent investigation and arrest of suspect Bryan Kohberger. Skydance Television is seeking to option the rights of the book as part of their first-look deal with Patterson. Story Syndicate is in final negotiations to be the production partner with Skydance on the docuseries.

Tot up the time you’ve wasted scrolling through streaming apps in search of the perfect viewing choice for that particular Tuesday night, and it’ll scare you. Hours of your life, accumulatively spent clicking the right-hand arrow and muting autoplay trailers. Instead of giving your thumb a work-out, you could have been composing symphonies! Writing the next great American novel! Gazing into the eyes of your loved ones! Or even better, actually watching TV.
No more. Every month, Den of Geek picks our TV recommendations to save your time. Here’s what February has to offer…

Plot: The true story of a group of college sophomores who fells under the saw of a father or one of their friends and found themselves willing members of a cult.
Review: During the pandemic, I got very into true crime documentaries. I can’t get enough of them, and luckily Netflix, Hulu and many other streaming services have been around the scratch my itch. People everywhere have gotten into these shows, and given how you can always rely on reality to be stranger than fiction, docuseries aren’t going anywhere. However, it can’t be denied there’s an exploitative aspect to some of them, especially when the stories profiled are recent.
This brings me to Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence. This criminal trial was still ongoing when the show premiered on Hulu a few weeks ago, with two of the primary players, Larry Ray and Isabella Pollok,...

Isabella Pollok, a member of the Sarah Lawrence sex cult featured in the Hulu docuseries “Stolen Youth,” was sentenced Wednesday to 54 months in federal prison.
Pollok, 31, pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to commit money laundering, avoiding a trial. According to prosecutors, she served as the chief lieutenant to Lawrence Ray, who relied on her to gain the trust of young women whom he would exploit for sex and money.
Ray was sentenced in January to 60 years in prison, after being convicted of extortion, sex trafficking and racketeering.
Under her plea agreement, Pollok faced a maximum of five years in prison. Her attorneys argued, however, that she should face no jail time, and stated that Ray had “brainwashed” her into doing his bidding.
“Isabella did whatever Ray directed,” the defense argued in a sentencing memo. “She does not deny that she enforced his bizarre edicts and philosophies. Rather, by pleading guilty,...

When Robert De Niro came out swinging, rhetorically, at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in 2016, it was the most stirring and surprising performance he'd given in years. "He's so blatantly stupid," he said in a campaign ad. "He's a punk. He's a dog. He's a pig. A con. A bulls**t artist. A mutt who doesn't know what he's talking about." Then he lowered the boom: "I'd like to punch him in the face."
Though the actor had long been on the record as a Democrat, he'd never been this emphatic about a political position in his public life. In fact, he'd never been emphatic about much of anything. Anyone who'd watched the actor squirm his way through an interview knew full well that the man wasn't much of a talker. When he did speak, he tended to be soft-spoken. He seemed almost embarrassed to be holding forth on any subject,...

Content warning: This post contains mentions of emotional and psychological abuse.
"Stolen Youth," Hulu's new docuseries that explores Larry Ray's reign of psychological terror over a group of Sarah Lawrence college students, is extremely difficult to watch. The three-part series, released on Feb. 8, contains many real videos taken during the students' time living with Ray, and many feature verbal and physical abuse.
The story of what would become known as the "cult at Sarah Lawrence" first broke when The Cut published an exposé in 2019. It detailed how Ray had moved into his daughter Talia's dorm at Sarah Lawrence, quickly developing a hold over her roommates by regaling them with self-improvement advice. He claimed his knowledge was drawn from his years in the Marines, but Ray had lied about that - along with many other aspects of his life.
Anyone who followed the story in 2019 knows what happened next.

This article contains spoilers for Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence.
When news first broke in 2020 that a man named Larry Ray had been arrested for operating a sex cult at Sarah Lawrence College, the casual news observer could be forgiven for finding the ensuing headlines slightly humorous at first.
The existence of a hippie sex cult would be in keeping with some prevailing stereotypes attached to the prestigious college in Yonkers, New York. Originally a women’s institution of higher learning, Sarah Lawrence became coeducational in 1968 and has since developed a reputation for its wealthy, creative, socially liberal, and generally “out there” student body.
Of all the colleges in the United States, of course the libertines at Sarah Lawrence would be the ones to “yes and” themselves into a sex cult. But as more bits of information began to trickle out it began to become clear that...

Lawrence “Larry” Ray prayed on the insecurities, past trauma, and innocence of college students over the course of almost a decade. The father of a student at New York’s elite liberal arts school Sarah Lawrence College, he moved into his daughter’s dorm room in 2010 where he sexually, psychologically and physically abused students he had groomed with “therapy sessions.” The headlines of a sex cult and its manipulative leader are countless, but Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence further brings faces to names and delves into Ray’s dark influence over others. The three-part Hulu docuseries looks at the unsettling crimes committed and mental anguish through recordings and video. Survivors also provide their own firsthand accounts as they look to pick up the pieces of their lives. Among the victims was Felicia Rosario, introduced to Ray by her brother Sarah Lawrence student Santos and sister Yelitza. The...

In the ‘90s teen romcom 10 Things I Hate About You, Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles), the film’s Riot Grrrl rebel who listens to Letters to Cleo and idolizes Sylvia Plath, wants nothing more than to attend Sarah Lawrence College. The choice tracks. A liberal arts college with less than 2,000 students nestled on 44 wooded acres in the suburb of Yonkers, New York, Sarah Lawrence not only boasts a certain sylvan-secluded charm, but also caters to artists and creatives, counting J.J. Abrams, Julianna Margulies, Carly Simon and Vera Wang among its notable alumni.

Half the battle in pulling together a creatively successful true-crime documentary is, surely, finding the right story — one that can hold our interest and can, potentially, generate insights beyond the simple facts of the case. But the other half, the filmmaker’s approach, matters every bit as much. In narrating the famous tale of a bizarre ring of extortion that bloomed at Sarah Lawrence College in the early 2010s, “Stolen Youth” director Zach Heinzerling certainly has his subject. But with a startling rawness and directness, Heinzerling’s work makes a case for itself as an unusually sensitive and strong outing in its genre.
