What Happened To The MCU?
This… well, this used to be one of the most reliable franchises in Hollywood, and now it’s not.
Let us explain.
For over a decade, it felt like the Marvel Cinematic Universe was on top of the world. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and his rotating crew of filmmakers churned out one hit after another, with each new movie in the MCU guaranteed to be one of the biggest of the year.
So what went wrong?
After what might be the most significant event in cinema history — Avengers: Endgame — the Marvel Cinematic Universe was primed for a reset. Many of the old characters were out, passing the baton to some new faces.

While Marvel only has one theatrical release this year with Deadpool and Wolverine, 2025 seems to be a packed year for the franchise. Apart from Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four, the MCU will also see Mahershala Ali’s Blade making it to the big screens in November 2025.
After multiple delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and key personnel changes, Ali’s Blade is reportedly headed for filming in the summer. Ma Dong-seok has been getting a lot of attention from the media in the last few years. While his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has certainly helped get his name out there, it was his iconic series, The Roundup, that helped his face get recognized. While this was the case in Western cultures, he has been a respected member of the South Korean film industry for decades.
Ma Dong-seok in Champion
Being one of the most talented and respected actors from there, it is not surprising that he is strong-willed and lives up to his title of the ‘Korean Superman’. It would seem that these traits were truly tested when he had to survive a true natural catastrophe.

Ma Dong-seok has become the talk of the town with the upcoming release of the third part in The Roundup series, The Roundup: Punishment.

For a lot of MCU fans, and Black Widow fans in particular, one of the most baffling choices the movies have made so far came in "Avengers: Endgame," when Black Widow/Natasha (Scarlett Johannsen) and Hawkeye/Clint (Jeremy Renner) tried to throw themselves off a cliff before the other could do it first. The cliff-jumping part made sense — one of them needed to die to save the world, and it was in character for both of them to sacrifice themself so the other could live. The questionable part was when Natasha successfully stopped Clint and flung herself to her death. It was a sad yet heroic end for her character, sure, but on a meta-level, wouldn't it make more sense for the movie to kill Clint?
No disrespect to Clint of course, but he was the less interesting of the two Avengers. He served his role well and had a heartwarming friendship with Natasha,...

Upon its release, Chloé Zhao’s Eternals made history by becoming the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to have received a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, the film sits at a meager rating of 47%. However, having given a 77% score, the audience clearly does not agree with the critics and believes that the film was not really as bad as they are saying. Many fans would agree that while Eternals was not one of the MCU’s greatest works, it still was an entertaining one-time watch, at least.

I’ll start with an important disclaimer for all readers since the following hot take will inevitably trigger strong reactions. As someone from a small European country and born in 1994, Ghostbusters (1984) was never a defining classic of my childhood or adolescence, so I don’t feel the nostalgia that many others have for the original film, although I do enjoy it. That said, I (re)watched it, along with Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife this week in preparation for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and – here it comes – I consider the 2021 sequel my favorite movie in the famous franchise. In fact, comparing it directly with the original – here it comes again – beyond the inevitable audiovisual improvements, I find Afterlife to have better humor, characters, and cast.

Despite the Avengers being the most famous superhero team currently in the MCU, they are far from being the only one. Alongside Earth’s Mightiest heroes we have, Eternals, Guardians of the Galaxy, and future projects are about to set up Thunderbolts, Young Avengers, and the X-Men within the mainline MCU continuity.
Now we know that Marvel Comics are home to plenty of superhero teams besides the aforementioned this is why a lot of fans were wondering whether there is a potential to expand on some less-known teams, the main candidate being Alpha Flight. In his recent Q&a Alex Perez, a reliable source for rumors and leaks related to the MCU, claimed that Marvel Studios is thinking about incorporating two other teams from the comics, and neither is Alpha Flight unfortunately.
There have been discussions about MI13 being developed, as well as Agents of Atlas.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Can’t Expect the Irish to Get Lucky Every Time
One of the biggest tragedies of modern cinema is the unavoidable fact that most movies make you wait at least ten minutes to hear a floating head loudly proclaim, “The penis is evil!” But 1974 was a different time and “Zardoz” is a different kind of movie, so it delivers that exact line before the five-minute mark even arrives. Believe it or not, that’s not even the first Wtf moment in this genitalia-obsessed fantasy epic.

It is not a new phenomenon in Hollywood that movies that are often critically and commercially panned end up getting recognized as great films years after their release. The MCU is no stranger to this phenomenon, with Eternals being the latest film getting this treatment. Critically panned at the theatres upon its release and largely snubbed by fans, Eternals has come out as a favorite of a host of people, who have taken to the Internet to talk about their newfound appreciation for the film.

Kang Dynasty Can Correct Endgame’s Greatest Mistake That’s Been Dogging the MCU Avengers Since Years
In a universe packed with superheroes, each with their own unique abilities and strengths, the challenge of effectively showcasing them all in epic battles has become a formidable task for the studio. The superhero ensemble of Avengers, which originated in the 2012 film with just six members, has undergone continuous expansion as new heroes join the fray. And by the events of Endgame, it extended to include several more superheroes, including Ant-Man and Spider-Man, along with teams like the Guardians of the Galaxy.

As the superhero cinematic universe presses forward for future ensembles in movies like The Kang Dynasty, the studio could potentially avoid the longstanding issue with the Endgame battle sequence.

When Eternals was released in the fall of 2021, it marked an all-time low Rotten Tomatoes score for the MCU. Having just come off of a 79% for Black Widow and a 92% for Shang-Chi to lead both Phase Four and the Multiverse Saga, Eternals earned the first-ever “rotten” score for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: a 47%. It was a shock to the franchise’s system but it may have had a far greater impact on star Kumail Nanjiani, who continues to bring up Eternals at therapy.

One new MCU star said his time working on this Phase 4 project led to "trauma" thanks to the negative reviews of its release.
Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani, who portrayed Kingo in the film, was recently on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast.
Before diving into his negative experiences surrounding the film's release, Nanjiani assured Rosenbaum he is "very proud of" Eternals and is "proud of everyone’s work in it:"

Nearly two years have gone by since we heard that production had wrapped on Cuckoo, a new horror film from writer/director Tilman Singer that stars Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo), and Jan Bluthardt (Tatort). Now we finally know when the movie is going to be making its way out into the world: Neon has announced that they’ll be giving Cuckoo a theatrical release on May 3rd.
At one point, it was announced that Gemma Chan (Eternals), Sofia Boutella (The Mummy 2017), Zita Hanrot, Proschat Madani (Walking on Sunshine), and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich) would be in the movie as well, but it looks like most of them had to drop out of the project before filming began.
Details on Cuckoo are being kept under wraps. This is the second feature for Singer, following the 2018 supernatural horror film Luz,...

This may be a controversial opinion, but Chloé Zhao's 2021 film "Eternals" is perhaps one of the best in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While several other chapters in the long-running media franchise may have featured more action and captured a certain kind of zippy character archetype that appeals to kids and adolescents, "Eternals" told a broad, philosophically dense sci-fi story that reached far outside superhero norms. The Eternals were a team of unfathomably ancient beings, constructed by ineffable space deities -- Celestials -- tasked with overseeing multiple billion-year cycles of God reproduction. The Celestials required the Eternals specifically because they did not evolve. Their previous creation, Deviants, evolved far too quickly. "Eternals" deals with a time frame so vast, evolution is considered "quick."

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) returned to theaters back in September with The Creator, and the sci-fi action thriller is now headed home to Hulu this month.
The Creator will be streaming exclusively on Hulu beginning December 20. If you’d rather not wait, the film is currently available for VOD rental beginning at just $5.99.
At the worldwide box office, The Creator ended its run with $104 million, which would’ve been a win for an original genre movie if not for the $80 million price tag. An $80 million production budget for a movie on this scale is relatively cheap, it’s important to note, but the film needed to make quite a bit more money in theaters to be considered a box office success.
The film stars John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles and Academy Award® winner Allison Janney (I,...

Following the arrival of Godzilla Minus One in theaters, Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli‘s latest masterstroke, The Boy and the Heron, is already flying high at the December box office! Analysts say The Boy and the Heron could soar to the number one spot this weekend after earning $2.39M in Thursday previews, with a chance to collect $10M+ over the next few days.
This trend is an excellent look for films stomping out of Japan and into domestic theaters. Godzilla Minus One roared last weekend with $2.1M in previews before going nuclear with $4.7M on Friday and a 3-day total of $11.4M across 2,308 theaters. Meanwhile, The Boy and the Heron opened on 1,774 screens across the United States and Canada, expanding to 2,205 markets this weekend.
Here’s a plot synopsis for The Boy and the Heron. If you want to go into the film blind, do not read it!

Will The Marvels reverse Marvel’s recent run of meh?
Not according to the early critic reviews. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe title is getting rather mediocre notices with a just-out-of-the-gate Rotten Tomatoes score in the mid-50s, which would make it one of the weakest MCU titles ever.
But what’s interesting is that many reactions to The Marvels are also intensely polarized — with some insisting the film is delightful fun while others are calling the movie “abject misery,” “turgidly mindless,” and “a new low” for Marvel. In general, the more traditional news outlets tend to skew against the film (Hollywood Reporter‘s review excluded) while some of the more fan-focused entertainment sites are much more positive. Overall, it seems like the more one has invested in watching all the previous MCU movies and TV shows, the more likely they are to dig The Marvels — and understand it.

It may seem hard to believe, but the Insidious franchise is getting long in the tooth! The first Insidious movie was released all the way back in 2010, kickstarting an unlikely string of movies under the watchful eye of Saw horror duo Leigh Whannell and James Wan.
At first, the franchise focused on the Lambert family, whose move to a new home coincided with their son Dalton falling into a mysterious coma. They soon found out that it wasn’t their home that was haunted, but their family. Thanks to the Lamberts’ ability to astral project their consciousnesses, they can access “The Further”, a purgatory dimension where they’re at risk of attracting restless spirits, demonic and otherwise.
The Further has been a central part of Insidious lore ever since, with two prequel movies telling stories outside of the Lambert family drama. But the heart of the...

This past September, a group of Marvel creatives, including studio chief Kevin Feige, assembled in Palm Springs for the studio’s annual retreat. Most years, the vibe would have been confident — even cocky — given how the premier superhero brand, owned by Disney since 2009, has remade the entertainment business in its image.
But this occasion was angst-ridden — everyone at Marvel was reeling from a series of disappointments on-screen, a legal scandal involving one of its biggest stars and questions about the viability of the studio’s ambitious strategy to extend the brand beyond movies into streaming. The most pressing issue to be discussed at the retreat was what to do about Jonathan Majors, the actor who had been poised to carry the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but instead is headed to a high-profile trial in New York later this month on domestic violence charges. The actor insists he is the victim,...
