After a busy Thanksgiving weekend which saw a solid-for-2021 $142 million five-day gross, things are taking a bit of a breather this weekend. The only new wide release is Focus’ specialty film Wolf, which is unlikely to displace any of last week’s box office winners. Expect a repeat of last weekend with Encanto, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and House of Gucci remaining in the top three, and we’ll see how well they hold as we await some of the year’s most anticipated films in the coming weeks. West Side Story, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Nightmare Alley, The Matrix Resurrections, and other big ticket holiday and award season films are just around the corner and will hopefully bring the pandemic-era box office to new heights.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Encanto will duke it out for the top spot this weekend. Encanto was in the lead last weekend, with $40.5 million compared to Ghostbusters’ $35 million for the five-day,...

Even The Losers get lucky sometimes. Before the Dceu was formed to compete against the ever-expanding, cash cow that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the approach at Warner Bros. was far looser. With the booming business of comic book adaptations in full swing, the studio was throwing money at several eclectic comic book titles like Watchmen and Jonah Hex, trying to stay competitive and seemingly more adult than their rivals. Hence before leaving to create his own superhero project, Hancock, writer-director Peter Berg started penning an adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s The Losers, bringing in French director Sylvain White to helm the picture.
Produced by Joel Silver, The Losers centered on a team of elite, black-ops Special Forces operatives betrayed by their handler. Director White connected with the material immediately.
“What appealed to me about The Losers was that it wasn’t the typical superhero-with-superpowers thing,” White told MTV. “It...

Stars like Jason Statham, Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson and Ben Affleck have brought a semblance of stability to an unsettled American Film Market this week.
The boom in streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon along with the emergence of new services from Disney, Apple and Warner Bros. has disrupted the traditional business model for the independent sector.
“Netflix wants your movie early now,” noted Bron Studios exec Anjay Nagpal at Friday’s Afm finance conference. “They don’t want it any more after you couldn’t sell it at festivals.”
Jeffrey Greenstein, president of Millennium Media, said at the event that money offered by streamers has made it tougher to sign name actors such as Butler — who has done a trio of “Fallen” movies for Millennium.

Shonda Rhimes wields a lot of power over her Shondaland empire, and that apparently extends to killing off characters for personal reasons.
During an appearance on "The Nightly Show" this week, Rhimes confessed to host Larry Wilmore that she's axed an actor simply because she didn't care for him (or her) -- but she's not telling who it is. The admission came during the regular "Nightly Show" segment "Keep It 100," when Wilmore asked Rhimes point blank if she'd "ever killed off a character because you didn't like the actor."
Rhimes, who smiled and laughed as Wilmore's question unfurled -- including urging the showrunner to reveal the person's identity -- eventually gave a short, decisive answer.
"Yes," Rhimes replied, "and I'm not naming names."
Of course, that hasn't stopped everyone from guessing just who the showrunner is referring to. Popular opinion suggests it's Patrick Dempsey, who reportedly was fired from "Grey's Anatomy" for diva-ish behavior,...

Shonda Rhimes's Year of Yes, available today, is less a memoir than it is a self-help book. For one year, one of the most powerful showrunners on television said yes to everything. She said yes to commencement speeches, yes to accepting more help, and — you guessed it — yes to herself. She spent more time with the people she loved, shed 127 pounds, and learned how to be a happier person. In this way, Year of Yes is not a burn book. It is not a ribald tale spilling hot industry tea. There are no VH1 behind-the-scenes moments explaining how Isaiah Washington was fired from Grey's Anatomy or what went down with Columbus Short on Scandal. There are no "What if?" casting scenarios. Instead, there are small, charmingly odd, inspirational stories, like how she reacted to the Red Wedding scene in Game of Thrones to how writing Cristina Yang was...

Per the press release, "True To the Game", which has sold over 2 million copies worldwide, is a tumultuous love story set in the late 1980's, that...

Looks like Columbus Short won’t be needing Olivia Pope’s help after all. The former “Scandal” actor reached a plea deal Thursday in a case stemming from an alleged bar brawl in West Los Angeles, the actor’s attorney said. “We came to an agreement with the prosecutor and the court,” Short’s attorney, Ludlow B. Creary II, told TheWrap. “Now Mr. Short can put this behind him and get on with his life and his career.” Short pleaded no contest to an amended felony count of assault likely to cause great bodily injury, and was sentenced to three...

"Scandal is getting back to what it does best: Gladiating," said show creator Shonda Rhimes early last month, in a TV Line interview on the series, essentially acknowledging that the show’s central Gladiator conceit had been sidelined a bit during the last couple of seasons, because, as she said, "we were busy healing Olivia," adding that Season 5 will feature "the reconstitution of Team Opa." This "reconstitution" obviously won't include all of the initial members of "Team Opa" since, as we already know, Columbus Short's character, Harrison, is no more. Maybe new addition Cornelius Smith Jr. (who plays Marcus...
