This year’s Berlinale Series Market kicks off Monday as Spanish series “The Snow Girl,” a missing girl suspense thriller produced by Spain’s Atípica Films, has attracted huge heat for Netflix, punching 101.7 million hours watched in its first three weeks. Doing so, it ranked as the streamer’s No. 1 non-English show in the world over Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.
In all, Spain has more shows and movies in Netflix’s all time non-English Top 10s than any other country in the world, seven to France’s two, for example.
Spain, it could be argued, has cracked online. But its drama series industry wants to ring more options.
As scripted commissions look to have dropped from second half 2022 in not only the U.S. but also Europe and Latin America, an energetic posse of Spanish producers and stars are rolling into Berlin to present new productions. These look set to explore an...

One of the Spanish-speaking world’s biggest sales forces, Film Factory Entertainment has swooped on sales rights to thriller “Two” (“Duo”), directed by Mar Targarona and the latest production from top Spanish genre auteur producer Rodar y Rodar.
Producer of two milestone titles of Spain’s genre auteur scene – J.A Bayona’s “The Orphanage” and Guillem Morales’ “Julia’s Eyes,” Targarona has built her own directorial career on suspense thrillers that prove unexpected and unpredictable in tone and resolution, such as 2016’s “Boy Missing” and “The Photographer of Mauthausen” – part true-events inspired record, part edge-of-set entertainment – in particular drawing strong notices. “Two” looks no exception. Its singular premise sees two strangers, a man and a woman in their 30s, wake up in an unknown place, naked and glued to each other by their stomachs. They struggle to understand how and why they got there – becoming increasingly terrified as they discover clues and the truth emerges.

Jess Franco: A name that inspires awe in some, revulsion in others, and eye rolling from those who see the sheer quantity of his output and are immediately dismissive. Making close to 200 films will tend to put one in that kind of light, as quality control would seem nigh impossible. And it was, for the most part; as someone fairly new to the sordid and sweaty oeuvre of Franco, I am choosing to highlight what I think are interesting, or at least enjoyable films from his catalogue. So it was with slight trepidation that I threw on 88 Films’ excellent restored Blu-ray of Devil Hunter (1980). Where would it land on the Franco Scale? As it turns out, a fun Indiana Jones meets Cannibal Island Monster jaunt is where he lands, and I’m more than happy to follow.
A little perspective perhaps; of the Francos I’ve seen, this comes across as the least personal,...

Barcelona — Projects “Deus Irae,” “The Occupant,” “9 Steps’ and ‘Fiesta” won prizes at the 4th Sitges Pitchbox, hosted by Spain’s Sitges Fantastic Film Festival in partnership with online platform Filmarket Hub and godfathered this year by Ron Perlman. Awards were announced Friday Oct. 5.
“Deus Irae” aims to be the feature debut of Argentine Pedro Cristiani, a co-writer of the acclaimed sci-fi short “Moebius.” A supernatural thriller and a follow-up to Cristiani’s short of the same name, “Deus Irae” follows Father Javier whose mandate is to examine and explain alleged miracles and Satanic events.
According to Cristiani, “the horror elements are explicit, but the visual treatment enhances its monstrous beauty.” Creature design is inspired by the creations of Dante Alighieri, Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon.
The first 26 minutes are already produced and the film expected to be completed in Argentina. It is backed by Cristiani, Simon Ratziel and Guido Volpi,...

San Sebastian — Smart genre, zombies and throwbacks to the ’70s and ‘80s are some of the current trends in genre cinema, according to some specialists in the field. It’s a cyclical dynamic now offering meaningful box office hits such as Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” or Ari Aster’s “Hereditary.” Genre cinema always attracts the attention of industry players. These are some of them.
An auteur-driven trend commands greatest consensus among experts. Matteo Lovadina, CEO of Paris-based sales and co-production company Reel Suspects, observed that some great examples recently of genre film have, “thanks to their clever storytelling,” been able to attract both auteur and genre audiences.
“Films like Joachim Trier’s ‘Thelma,’ Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’, David Robert Mitchell’s ‘It Follows’ or ‘Hereditary,’ have brought genre cinema again into focus and restored a certain credit to this hidden part of the cinematic world,” Lovadina observed.

Asmodexia, the Barcelona-set horror film from IFC Midnight, arrived in theaters and on VOD platforms last week and we’ve been provided with two new clips for Daily Dead readers who haven’t had a chance to check out the new exorcism movie.
“Asmodexia concerns Eloy de Palma, an exorcist pastor roaming the darkest corners of the country with his granddaughter Alba. Their mission is to help those possessed by The Evil One, an infection of the soul that is spreading fast, especially among the most vulnerable members of society: children, mental patients, and drug addicts. There is also a mysterious cult following them, making it more difficult to help those in need. Each exorcism is tougher than the one before, and every battle with Evil reveals a piece of young Alba’s forgotten past – an enigma that if unconcealed could change the world as we know it.”

Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. They'll also have panels, and they've got some great ones planned. Overall, it looks like a really cool chance to see a fistful of the best of what indie horror has going on right now with bonuses that simply make the weekend better. From August 21 to August 24, you'll be able to check out some great films. How? Well, here's how they put it: Tickets for All screenings are free to attend...

Of the film, which stars Lluis Marco and Claudia Pons as the beleaguered as grandfather and granddaughter (respectively), "Asmodexia will have its world premiere at Brussels Ifff next month," Hostench told us. Check out the trailer below:
Here's the official synopsis, 'Eloy de Palma is an exorcist pastor roaming the darkest corners of the country with his granddaughter Alba. Their mission is to help those possessed by The Evil One, an infection of the soul that is spreading fast, especially among the most vulnerable members of society: children, mental patients, and drug addicts. News out of Berlin today is that Toronto-based Raven Banner has acquired the international rights to Marc Carreté's debut feature, the exorcism horror film Asmodexia. Carreté has written and directed two short films prior to Asmodexia. He wrote this first feature with Mike Hostench, co-director of one of the largest and most important genre film festivals in the world, the Sitges Film Festival. The deal was negotiated on behalf of the producers of the film by Xyz Films, who own the North American rights to the film. I can only imagine this was done over many Bockbiers in a traditional German beer garden. One can dream. Asmodexia tells the story of a grandfather and granddaughter exorcist team, who travel the Barcelona area plying their trade. There was whiff...

About an hour north of Barcelona, an old tuberculosis hospital was converted to a large film studio, the Parc Audiovisual de Catalunya. Fans of Spanish horror film have likely seen several films shot there, and the most recent film in production is Asmodexia. The first feature film directed by Marc Carreté, written by Carreté and Mike Hostench (co-director of the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival), the studio's former use has served useful for some scenes of the film, which I was able to visit recently.Asmodexia tells the story of a grandfather and granddaughter exorcist team, who travel the Barcelona area plying their trade. On set, I had the opportunity to watch a scene being shot, and talk to Carreté and Hostench about the film. In addition,...

Well, here's a little treat from an old friend. Regulars at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain - simply put the most important genre film event in Europe - need no introduction to Mike Hostench, the energetic co-director of the festival. Well, Hostench is switching teams, as it were, and serving as a script writer on upcoming horror picture Asmodexia.Slated for a summer shoot, Asmodexia is the feature debut of helmer Marc Carrete - who has had a pair of short films play in competition at Sitges, starting the relationship between the two men - from his own original idea. The story follows an itinerant exorcist and his granddaughter as they travel the Spanish countryside and while principal photography has not yet begun,...

If you're a fan of possession flicks and/or foreign horror, read on for more details coming out of Cannes 2013 regarding Emili Pons' just launched Barcelona-based low-cost genre label Ms Entertainment, which announced its first project will be Asmodexia, the feature debut of Marc Carrete.
Per Variety, Catalan Carrete's shorts — Mal cuerpo and slasher pic Castidermia (check out its trailer below) — bowed at Catalonia’s Sitges Festival in 2011 and 2012, respectively; and this new project doesn't stray far from home. The Spanish-language horror film takes place over five days in the lives of an exorcist and his granddaughter, who work in the Barcelona area.
The screenplay is by Sitges fest deputy director Mike Hostench and Carrete from the director's original idea. Asmodexia goes into production August 26th, with Hostench taking an associate producer credit. Speaking at Cannes, Hostench described Asmodexia as a more realistic exorcism movie than most, where location is incredibly important.

One of the problems of attending major genre film festivals like Spain’s Sitges (see last report here and go to www.sitgesfilmfestival.com), is that the movies that sharp programmers like Angel Sala and Mike Hostench select are so good that they become an addiction. You can’t get enough and you want to keep the high going, running from film to film. There are at least 140 features unspooling at Sitges, and despite the gorgeous sunny weather outside (“The last gasp of summer,” per U.K. scribe Alan Jones), the pristine local beaches and nearby Barcelona (one of the greatest cities of the world) only a short train ride away, the strange but intoxicating sensation of sitting in a darkened theater and watching flickering images go by is too powerful to resist. Over the next five days, I hope to indulge in at least a dozen additional movies.

Greetings from Spain, where the 42nd annual Sitges International Festival of Fantastic Cinema of Catalunya is being held through October 12. As the editor of Fangoria, this marks my third trip to this gorgeous Spanish coastal town (25 minutes south of Barcelona by car) where the world’s largest and most prestigious festival of genre cinema takes place each fall. At least 200 feature films and shorts will be unspooling here over 10 days. In the past, I have chronicled these filmic adventures in the pages of the mag; this year, I will do my best to keep a daily blog of the stars, sites and cinema that I will be experiencing on my jaunt, augmented by British Correspondent Alan Jones’ own major wrap-up. Alan is a Sitges vet who has attended the event for at least three decades.
After the long overnight flight from NYC to Frankfurt to Barcelona to Sitges,...
