Black. It is the color that absorbs all colors, the shade that holds the sun's warmth as it moves east to west. It is the color of a people, not just African but Caribbean, Middle Eastern, American, and more. But it is also music: the color at the center of the trumpet's brass ring, the shadow that fills the club when the lights get low and the party begins. Over the decades, Latin music has built a reputation for being wildly popular, no doubt in part due to its danceable nature. But what often gets lost in the conversation is the contribution that Black Latines had in cultivating the sound that, today, many of us regard as uniquely "Latin."

A pink moon shone bright over three archways flanked by stairs bathed in colored light. From stage-right, old Hollywood feathers covered the woman of the hour, carried onstage by her dancers á la Cleopatra. A dancer came out, announcing the arrival of “La divina Kali Uchis.”

The feathers parted, and the spotlight turned to Uchis, a monochrome red vision in a long-sleeved top paired with thigh-high heeled boots and a short skirt. Greeted by a shrieking crowd, she boldly kicked the night off with “telepatía.

Reggaeton originated in Panama as Afro-diasporic music. It was a transformation of dancehall, hip-hop, and reggae en español that eventually made its way to NYC, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the rest of Latin America. Some of the pioneering artists behind the musical revolution included El General and Renato. But reggaeton wouldn't evolve out of el underground movement and gain the commercial attention it deserved until the early 2000s when a Puerto Rican rapper on the island by the name of Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, who we all know today as Daddy Yankee, dropped his megahit "Gasolina" off his "Barrio Fino" album. The song debuted at No.1 on Billboard's Top Latin Album charts on July 31, 2004, becoming the first reggaeton album to hit that spot. It would eventually become the top-selling Latin album of 2005 - and the entire decade - making him the leyenda of reggaeton he is today.

If you google "reggaeton," how many women artists will you see on your results page? Not a lot. To understand how and when the reggaeton genre started to make room for women artists, we have to start at the beginning - even before Ivy Queen, the Queen of Reggaeton. The origin story of reggaeton is complex and intricate: a male-dominated genre that is now gaining female momentum for women artists, globally. Nevertheless, its history has been ignored by the general public. Or is it just unknown to many? Thanks to resources like Spotify's "Loud" podcast, narrated by Ivy Queen, and the work of academic scholars, it doesn't have to be. Let's dive into how this Latino musical genre has been pushing the inclusivity boundaries of gender and sexuality.
