"Keep Austin Weird" isn't just a catch phrase created by some offbeat tourist marketing campaign, but rather a mantra that emulates the quickly diminishing quirkiness that drew me to Austin from the big city of Houston, Texas in 1993. The cast of characters often encountered in the local scene, whether on the Drag or downtown, contributed to the charm and allure of the Capital City.

Attention, fans of Kevin James or Ayn Rand (or both!): This is your week at the movies! Enjoy your moment, for the rest of us -- at least those who aren't into action or horror films -- must settle for a middling group of new releases. (Question of the day: Is Atlas Shrugged Part II a horror film? Discuss.)
As always, there are some interesting alternatives. The Texas Independent Film Network presents Man on a Mission (pictured above), a terrific documentary about Austin billionaire Richard Garriott's 2008 trip to the International Space Station on a Russian rocket. This inspiring film by Austin filmmaker Mike Woolf -- which the Austin Chronicle calls "a first-class seat to stargazing" -- screens at the Violet Crown on Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, The Austin Film Society presents a film that's a bit more down to Earth: the 1939 classic Ninotchka, featuring Greta Garbo as a...

"Ready, Set, Fund" is a column about crowdfunding and related fundraising endeavors for Austin and Texas independent film projects.
It's only natural that talented acquaintances in the local music scene like Britt Daniel of Spoon or Ian Moore have achieved national recognition for their musical talent. Another success story is that of one of the hardest working bands I've ever known, The Gourds, comprised of Kevin Russell, Keith Langford, Max Johnston, Jimmy Smith and Claude Bernard. In addition to routinely playing at Shady Grove and Threadgill's South, or touring nationally, the Gourds also contributed music to a local short film, Mike Woolf's 2003 documentary Growin' a Beard.
The Gourds themselves are now the subject of All the Labor, a documentary currently funding through Monday, June 11, on Kickstarter. Filmmaker Doug Hawes-Davis is the founder of the annual Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Missoula, Montana, where he initially met the band...

It's time to stop recuperating from SXSW and venture back into the world of Austin moviegoing. Fortunately, plenty of options are available. The Austin Jewish Film Festival starts tomorrow night -- read Chale's preview for details. And one of my favorite movies is screening at Alamo Drafthouse Ritz this week: catch Harold and Maude nightly Saturday through Tuesday. Or you could head over to the Blue Starlite Drive-In on Saturday night for a double feature of Back to the Future and The Goonies.
This is also a good week for indie film-watching. Boston-to-Austin filmmaker Andrew Bujalski will be at Alamo Ritz on Sunday night for a 10th anniversary screening of his film Funny Ha Ha. And on Tuesday night, the Texas Independent Film Network hosts a "beer and bbq" documentary double-feature at Violet Crown Cinema: Chris Elley's Barbecue: A Texas Love Story (narrated by Ann Richards) and Mike Woolf's Something's Brewin' in Shiner.

Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission Trailer. Mike Woolf‘s Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission (2010) movie trailer stars Richard Garriott, Owen Garriott, Helen Garriott, Robert Garriott, and Sergey Brin. Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission‘s plot synopsis: “Firmly ensconced in the geeky pantheon of computer legends since high school, Richard Garriott can afford to pursue his dreams – even the wildly improbable ones. For instance, following in his astronaut father’s footsteps. Nasa won’t take you because of bad eyes? No problem! Pioneer your own private space industry and buy a $30 million seat on a Russian Soyuz. Richly funny and invigorating, Man on a Mission tags along with Richard on his years-long quest to be the second Garriott into space. And maybe come back.”
On Richard Garriott and his past:
For years, most people who knew Richard Garriott knew him by his game industry alter-ego: Lord British. Under that name,...

Film on Tap is a column about the many ways that beer (or sometimes booze) and cinema intersect in Austin.
One of the newest local breweries is Austin Beerworks, located in North Austin. This microbrewery blasted out this summer with a firm grasp on the sparsely populated canned craft beer market, winning a silver medal in the English-style summer ale category at the Great American Beer Festival for their Peacemaker Extra Pale Ale. Austin Beerworks has redefined the term "river beer" -- beer that will quench the thirst while floating down the Guadalupe and adhering to the no-glass restrictions. No more "sex in a canoe" beer of American light lager selections, but instead a more diverse selection of beer styles is available for packing in on camping and float trips.
A growing trend in the craft beer industry is collaboration beers, whether between brewers or local businesses. Austin Beerworks brewer...

Sundance Film Festival has announced much of its 2012 lineup. So far, one Austin movie is included -- Kid-Thing, the latest feature from David Zellner and Nathan Zellner. The cast includes not only the Zellner brothers but also Susan Tyrell, who now lives in Austin. In addition, former Austinite Mark Duplass (who once participated in a filmmaker "wrestling match" with the Zellners) has scripted a thriller in the Park City at Midnight category: Black Rock, directed by and starring Katie Aselton. Aselton and Duplass are married. (If you haven't seen Aselton before, Bryan Poyser's short The Fickle is a fun place to start -- it's available online, and the gentleman who leaps is David Zellner. Here's the latest Austin film news.
Drafthouse Films, the distribution company associated with Alamo Drafthouse, has announced its latest acquisition: The Fp, which premiered at SXSW 2011 in the Midnighters section. It's about gang wars that take place using a dance-fight video game. Film critic Scott Weinberg reviewed the movie for Twitch and essentially says it's a one-joke movie, but a good joke it manages to sustain throughout its 78-minute running time. Drafthouse Films plans a limited theatrical release in the first quarter of 2012. In addition, Drafthouse Films now has a new company director, Evan Husney.More distribution news, Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission has landed a distribution deal with First Run Features. Though Richard Garriott is probably best known for his active involvement in the video game industry - he developed the popular Ultima series - he is also the son of Nasa astronaut Owen Garriott. After building a personal fortune over the years, in early 2008 Richard followed his father's footsteps by writing a $30 million check to go up into space aboard the Russian Soyuz rocket and live aboard the International Space Station for 10 days. Mike Woolf's film documents the events leading up to the launch, his training in Russia, and the time spent on the station, shot by Richard during his stay. ...

Fantastic Fest 2010 Adds New Films To Its Impressive Lineup
Fantastic Fest, the largest genre festival in the U.S., is excited to announce additional films to its mind-blowing roster of features & shorts. Highlights of this announcement are the Us premiere of the hyper-stylized action film Bunraku, a sneak preview of Darren Bousman’s terrifying new horror-thriller film, Mother’s Day (featuring a bravura performance by Rebecca DeMornay), and the world premiere of Agnosia, the latest film from Fantastic Fest 2005 Alumnus Eugenio Mira.
Additionally, Fantastic Fest will play host to a sneak preview of the highly anticipated action-comedy Red, starring pretty much the best cast assembled for a comic book adaptation…ever. With the Fantastic Fest 2010 just two weeks away, the “largest genre festival in the U.S.” has announced a third wave of films.
Included in the line-up are Summit Entertainment’s action-comedy Red, Darren Bousman’s Mother’s Day, and the stylized action flick Bunraku with Josh Hartnett and Woody Harrelson.
But I’m especially excited about the addition of Agnosia, a “romantic thriller” produced by Guillermo del Toro. ”I’ve read few screenplays in my life that have impressed me as much as Agnosia,” del Toro said. Spanish filmmaker Eugenio Mira directed.
Fantastic Fest is also hosting a special “Master Pancake Theater” (similar to Mystery Science Theater) to mock Independence Day with guest Bill Pullman, plus a Spaceballs quote-along. Finally, they have planned the world premiere of the SyFy movie Sharktopus, followed by the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Roger Corman and his wife, Julie. Again, I...

In a few weeks, Austin, Texas will be host to one of the most incredible genre film festivals in the world. While we sadly won’t be able to attend this year’s Fantastic Fest, we are having a blast covering it from afar. The fine programmers are slowly teasing out the incredible line-up of films, and special guests.
Just yesterday it was announced that Roger Corman and his lovely wife Julie will be receiving a lifetime achievement award from the festival, and I couldn’t be happier for all involved. I know this year has been tremendous for Roger, with all of the DVDs and Blu-rays that Shout! Factory have been releasing, the Comic Con panel that Shout helped organize, and now this award from Fantastic Fest, the Corman’s must be riding an incredible wave of joy. We’ve written about several of the Corman Collection releases over the past few months,...

Another round of programming announcements from Fantastic Fest includes the news that Robert Schwentke's graphic novel adaptation "Red," starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren as former CIA agents forced back into action, will be screening as a sneak preview at the festival, as will "Mother's Day," starring Rebecca De Mornay, the new film from "Repo! The 16th annual San Antonio Film Festival, which runs June 23-27, is truly a great combination of celebrating local talent and international cinema, screening films produced in Texas to ones produced in Europe, South America and the Middle East.

The fine folks at SXSW just announced a handful of the remaining Audience Award winning films. You can find all of our coverage of SXSW here. The previous winners were announced last week and you can find the complete list here. Over the next few weeks we’ll be posting more reviews of the films screened in Austin for SXSW, along with some video/audio that I recorded while at the festival. Congratulations to all of the winners! I’ve included trailers to all of the films, along with links to their official homepages where available. Hopefully these films will all get distributed in the states, both theatrically and on home video, so you all can experience them.

Local serial entrepreneur and Austin game development industry pioneer Richard Garriott launched an incredible adventure into space in 2008. The feature documentary Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission followed him through his training and flight with the Russian space program. I spoke to director Mike Woolf about the film as well as Garriott himself recently. Hear what he has to say about why Woolf and producer Brady Dial took on this project, the challenges of training and the benefits of private space travel in our latest podcast. You can also read my review of Man on a Mission, which premiered at this year's SXSW Film Festival.

Richard Garriott: Man on A Mission is an inspiring full-length documentary by local filmmaker Mike Woolf that chronicles Austin serial entrepreneur and game developer Richard Garriott as he becomes the first second generation astronaut to travel into space. The film takes viewers on a detailed countdown to launch as Garriott makes his way through his year of training. From Star City, Moscow, to Nasa, to Yuri Gagarin’s original launch pad -- viewers are Garriott's co-pilot in his journey to the stars. Through Garriott's experiences, the audience not only gets a fresh look at the under-appreciated history of the Russian space program but also is exposed to never-before-seen footage from inside the re-entry capsule.
The liftoff to space seen in Man on a Mission was a lifetime in the making. Garriott built his fortune as one of the founding fathers of massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORGs), most notably his first game Ultima.

Director: Mike Woolf Featuring: Richard Garriott, Owen Garriott, Michael Fincke Man on a Mission follows Richard Garriott, an Austinite who made millions by being at the forefront of the gaming industry and through a succession of very lucrative investments. Garriott, known for spending his money on adventure, has always had a dream of traveling in space, following in the footsteps of his father, Nasa astronaut Owen Garriott. While Nasa was less than eager to see Richard’s dream realized, the Russians were slightly more intrigued, as long as Garriott was able to put up the money for research and training, something he was more than willing to do. After months of training and planning, Garriott’s dream of traveling into space became a reality. Man on a Mission will be an exhilarating documentary for anyone interested in space travel, and probably even for those who aren’t. Garriott’s journey is quite interesting and unique,...

Although he hails from Baltimore, documentary filmmaker Mike Woolf is now firmly planted in Austin and no stranger to SXSW. In 2000, he started Beef and Pie Productions with renowned photographer/Dp Andrew Yates and producer Karen Yates. Four of their short docs including Growin’ A Beard, The 72oz Steak, Tuesday Nighter and Life is Marbleous have premiered at SXSW. I caught Growin' A Beard at SXSW in 2003, and was amazed to see how the filmmakers made an engaging documentary based on an annual beard-growing contest in Shamrock, Texas.
The Beef and Pie Productions team has now taken on their first full-length documentary, Richard Garriott: Man on a Mission, featuring a certain local entrepreneur and the first second-generation astronaut. I had the chance to sit down with Mike Woolf at the Draught House -- hence all the beer references -- to discuss his latest project. Here's what he had to say:...

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its 2010 feature line-up Wednesday night, and I couldn’t be more excited. The nine day event starts March 12, 2010 here in Austin, Texas, and I’ll be covering as much as I can from start to finish. Though, if it’s anything like last year, I’ll be asleep on my feet by the end of it.
The 2010 list includes 119 films (55 world premieres), but here are a few notables: The previously announced Kick-Ass will start the festivities. Elektra Luxx, the sequel to the underseen comedy Women in Trouble, starring Carla Gugino, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and too many more to name. Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass in which Edward Norton plays identical twins. A documentary titled People vs. George Lucas that I will be seeing. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs. Plus the “SNL” spin-off movie MacGruber in its world premiere, possibly before the MacGyver creator shuts it down.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.
