Being a fan of 1940’s heroes and characters, I’ve loved the Project Superpowers books since they first appeared. It didn’t hurt having Alex Ross on board of course, as a designer/ plotter and cover artist. He makes anything look good. What Dynamite did was take a whole load of now public domain characters, many of whom had very brief moments in the Sun a long time ago, and give them a bit of spit and polish. They took their greatest weaknesses, their old values and out of date look, and actually made that the driving force of the books. How would these characters act today? would they still be heroes? Would they like what we’ve become? A lot of water has gone under the bridge since the book’s launch in 2008, but this new storyline still,...

Everything old is new again. The return of the Patch persona, from Wolverine’s Madripoor days, is another in Marvel’s recent nostalgia push. As their main line of books modernizes, with changes to characters and themes not universally enjoyed, Marvel is trying to keep that older market with previously untold stories from classic runs by classic creators. We’ve got the classic 90’s pairing of Ron Marz and Ron Lim on Silver Surfer, we’ve got X-Men Legends revisiting classic periods of the past with Claremont, and now we have Larry Hama back writing Wolverine from the classic 90’s run. Which is great news. Hama brought a real freshness to the book when he wrote it, and I still have all his issues which stand up well today. He ‘gets’ Wolverine.
Let’s see what we get.

At the conclusion of the American Civil War, Union soldiers must survive a new kind of fight against supernatural horrors in the comic book series Swamp God, and with the first issue now available from Heavy Metal magazine, we've been provided with exclusive preview pages to share with Daily Dead readers!
Swamp God Synopsis: "At the end of the American Civil War, a ragtag squad of Confederate soldiers calls upon the ultimate evil to save the South. Now, the remains of their unit must team up with Union soldiers to survive the horrors of the Swamp God. This issue also features character designs by Paolo Armitano."
Here's what creator/writer Ron Marz had to say about the genesis of Swamp God and why it was great to team up with Heavy Metal for its release:

New times call for new heroes. And a time in which society’s been buried under a crushing financial crisis? Such a world needs heroes more than most. This is the world of a new prose anthology series known as Phenomenons.
“I remember the early days of Marvel Comics and how exciting it was to see the Avengers watch an appearance of the Fantastic Four on TV, or contact Doc Strange for advice,” says Michael Jan Friedman, the NY Times bestselling author and comic book writer who hatched the idea for Phenomenons. “Or at DC, how cool it was to see Superman and Batman go at the same problem from different angles. You got the sense that these heroes—and villains—all operated in the same frame of reference, and somehow that made it seem more real.
“Our heroes will be doing the same thing. Half the fun will be seeing them join forces,...

Normally for the festive season we get a few specials or one-shots, which are generally entertaining enough to see us through to the New Year. This year, though, I think the marketing and sales departments have been on the phone, as DC have this Endless Winter ‘event’ happening. It’s going to spill over into a lot of books coming out in December, so get used to a lot of ice and snow based puns and story titles in the near future. Does the holiday season need a big event? The Summer is traditionally the blockbuster event season, and DC’s Dark Multiverse storyline is still rumbling along with various one-shots, so not entirely sure this is needed, but hey, it’s here and I’m reading it. I will say that writers Andy Lanning and Ron Marz are good choices,...

Reaction around the virtual office water cooler mid-pandemic when DC’s winter crossover, Endless Winter, was announced was guarded excitement, along with the occasional wry “Oh you mean March?” Turns out, it wasn’t that far off, according to co-writer Ron Marz.
“The fact that we’re doing this [online] instead of in person at the Javitz Center is part of it,” he said at DC’s Endless Winter panel at New York Comic Con replacement Metaverse. “We’re all feeling a sense of isolation.”
Endless Winter is a nine part crossover that runs through two bookend issues, three specials, and the regular issues of Flash, Aquaman, and Justice League in December. Marz (Green Lantern) and Andy Lanning (Legion Lost) are co-writing, with art on each chapter from Marco Santucci (Shazam) along with another artist on each individual book.

DC character 80th anniversaries are the gift that keep on giving for everyone. For fans like me, these Specials have been fantastic. For creators, a chance to do a stand-alone tale from a specific era, or for a creator with a long history with that character a chance to go home again. Obviously for DC, those balance sheets should look decent too. Green Lantern’s 80th is slightly different, in that there have been many Green Lantern’s down the years. The most famous, Hal Jordan, didn’t appear until the dawn of the Silver Age in the 1950’s, so DC are cheating a little here, as it’s really the 80th anniversary of the original Green Lantern himself, Alan Scott. My favourite Justice Society of America member, as it happens, but probably not a guy to carry a 100 page book by himself.

The Rise of Skywalker is currently playing in theaters as the final film in the Sequel Trilogy, bringing the saga to a conclusive end after more than 40 years of storytelling. Yet, the fact that it’s as controversial as its predecessor is all the proof you need to realize that Star Wars is perpetually doomed to be divisive.
The Last Jedi surprised viewers by exploring new themes that went against what Abrams had planted in The Force Awakens. These were mysteries that people wanted to be solved by the end of the Sequel Trilogy, but Rian Johnson didn’t care much about catering to fan requests, and ultimately decided it was better to serve the characters and the narrative as a whole. Though director J.J. Abrams insists that The Rise of Skywalker isn’t backtracking from its predecessor in any way, no one can deny that the two movies fail...

In an interview with Empire magazine, Martin Scorsese gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe the cold shoulder, comparing the billion-dollar franchise to theme parks.
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese told Empire magazine. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
His comments on superhero movies incited responses from other filmmakers like James Gunn and Joss Whedon, as well as some comic-book personalities. Whedon, a frequent collaborator in the McU, responded to Scorsese’s comments by highlighting the work of “Guardians of the Galaxy” director Gunn.
Gunn also spoke out on Twitter, saying, “I was outraged when people picketed ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ without having seen the film.

In Marvel comics, Carol Danvers is only the latest character to call herself Captain Marvel. Here are the six others…
For a superhero that shares the name of the very company that publishes their adventures, the Captain Marvel identity has been surprisingly inconsistent over the years. Indeed, the first Captain Marvel wasn’t owned by Marvel at all, and it wasn’t until the late 1960s that Marvel had its own version of the character.
But Mar-Vell, who you may have heard of, was only the first in a long line of heroes who took the name – a line which culminates with Carol Danvers hitting cinema screens as the star of the Captain Marvel movie.
Here's a rundown of all the characters who have donned the Captain Marvel persona:
1. Mar-Vell
Marvel Super-Heroes #12 (1967)
