A lengthy talk-fest interview of the underrated filmmaker, who takes us through his life story as a personal journey, not a string of movie assignments. Sidney Lumet seems to attract a lot of criticism, and so did this docu for not challenging his opinions or rubbing his nose in his less admirable movie efforts. The docu is just Lumet’s thoughts, and the words of a man of integrity are always inspiring.

This ought to be a good year for documentary filmmaker Nancy Buirski. I first caught up with her excellent feature docu Afternoon of a Faun, about the ill-fated ballerina Tanaquil Le Clerc, and she’s had other successes as well.

20th Century Fox is shifting around its release schedule with three films being affected.
The big announcement is that the Ridley Scott 'mystery project' has been moved up from March 4th 2016 to November 25th 2015. It will indeed be the Drew Goddard-penned adaptation of Andy Weir's novel "The Martian" rather than the "Prometheus" sequel as previously rumored.
Matt Damon plays an astronaut who is stranded on a Martian colony and struggles to survive. Back on Earth, Nasa tries to mount a rescue mission.
As a result of the shift, the Tim Burton-directed "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiars" has been bumped from a July 31st 2015 to that now vacant March 4th 2016 date. It's not an unexpected move as Burton is committed to filming "Big Eyes" before 'Peculiars'.
Fox isn't giving up that July 31st 2015 date either, slotting in the film adaptation of Josh Green's "Paper Towns" on that date.

The long awaited adaptation of Josh Green's novel "The Fault in Our Stars" finally hit the big screen this weekend and fans are flocking to their local theater in droves. "Stars" centers on Gus and Hazel (played by Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley), two teenage cancer patients who unexpectedly fall in love after meeting at a local support group. Directed by Josh Boone, "Fault" has earned positive reviews with an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 69 grade on Metacritic. The bigger news, however, is "Fault's" performance at the box office where it's expected to earn over $50 million over its first three days. A figure almost unheard of for a romantic drama. HitFix's own Drew McWeeny gave a thumbs up to "Stars" in his official review, but that doesn't mean the rest of the editorial staff weren't willing to be blunt about the pros and cons of this pop culture phenomenon.

There are good tearjerkers that earn their emotional impact on audiences and bad tearjerkers that exploit them. Cancer dramas dance across this line with particular frequency. For every smart, balanced portrait of living with illness like Jonathan Levine’s insightful “50/50,” there’s the grating form of bottled sentimentalism found in “The Bucket List.” But it’s not always that cut and dry. “The Fault in Our Stars” provides an inoffensive, if largely underwhelming, counterexample: An adaptation of Josh Green’s bestselling 2012 novel, it straddles the line between earnest weepie and a savvy deconstruction of one, partly because everyone involved seems to resist its inevitable direction. Starring Shailene Woodley as a dying teen who finds love with a fellow cancer patient played by her “Divergent” co-star Ansel Elgort, the movie hits all the obvious beats that are primed to make you cry, from the shouting matches that devolve into tears to...

In 2007, Filipino YouTube star Arnel Pineda was vaulted from viral-video notoriety to international fame as the new lead singer of Journey. This was mere months after the finale of The Sopranos, when the wave of Journey comeback nostalgia was arguably at its peak. In Pineda's words, "I'm short ... I'm So Asian ... " How was this guy going to fit into the mold of the classic American rock star? That's the story you'll find in the documentary film Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey. Director Ramona S. Diaz brought her film to the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012, where Pineda wowed the crowds both onstage and off. (Wonder what Documentary Character Type he'd fit into?) Now, the film opens in selected cities across America this Friday, March 8. See if it's playing near you. Live in NYC? Ramona S. Diaz and Executive Producer Josh Green will be ...
