The characters from the popular television series and hit 90s movies “The Addams Family” are set to return to the stage. A new musical, first produced in 2010 and based on the beloved fictional family, is coming to the Candlelight Pavilion in Claremont, California, just east of Los Angeles. The production is currently casting all parts. The musical adaptation draws inspiration from the Addams family’s origin in single-panel gag cartoons drawn by creator Charles Addams. Andrew Lippa and John August, the composer and script writer of the 2013 Broadway musical “Big Fish,” have blasted the decision by a Pittsburgh theater to cancel an upcoming production because of the director’s plan to include a same-sex couple and their child in one of the show’s production numbers.
“‘Family-friendly’ shouldn’t mean ignoring reality,” Lippa and August said in a joint statement to TheWrap on Thursday. “Let’s remember that in America there are all kinds of families, including ones with two dads, two moms, people of all gender identity, color and creed. Family-friendly is something bigger than it once was.”
August and Lippa made the statement after they learned that the Palisade Playhouse in Pittsburgh had halted the production following the resignation of director Nik Nemec and several cast members. Nemec quit when he clashed with playhouse producers over how to include a gay family in the background of a song.

A Pittsburgh “family-friendly” community theater has canceled a production of the musical Big Fish after a dispute with the director over the inclusion of a same-sex couple as background characters, drawing a strong rebuke from the musical’s authors.
Family-friendly “shouldn’t mean ignoring reality,” said the 2013 musical’s book writer John August and composer Andrew Lippa in a statement provided to Deadline. “Let’s remember that in America there are all kinds of families, including ones with two dads, two moms, people of all gender identity, color and creed. Family-friendly is something bigger than it once was.”
August and Lippa spoke out after they learned that Pittsburgh’s Palisade Playhouse had nixed a production following the May 8 protest resignation of director Nik Nemec and several cast members. Nemec quit when told that the playhouse producers would not allow his depiction of a two-dad family in the background of a musical scene.

The world premiere production of a new work, I Am Anne Hutchinson I Am Harvey Milk--what the creators call a concept opera--takes place next Saturday, April 23, at the Music Center at Strathmore, in North Bethesda, MD, a Metro ride from Washington, DC. It stars Kristin Chenoweth, the Broadway star with operatic training, and the work's composer-librettist, Broadway's Andrew Lippa, backed by the National Philharmonic and the Alexandria Harmonizers. When Lippa, the Broadway composer, was commissioned by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus to write I Am Harvey Milk for its 35th anniversary in 2013, the hour-long work about the assassinated gay rights activist was called an oratorioand while it was a success from the start, people involved already thought it was ready to move on to something bigger.

Are you Team Lippa or Team Lachiusa? For theater types, the dueling musicals of The Wild Party — one by Andrew Lippa, one by Michael John Lachiusa, both somehow given their premieres in the spring of 2000 — provide an opportunity for personal branding and group identification that others may get from, say, The Hunger Games. Both derive from Joseph Moncure March’s seedy Jazz Age narrative poem about a gin-soaked debauch chez Queenie and Burrs, a vaudeville siren and her abusive lover. Both musicals use (to varying degrees) vaudeville itself as a framing device and a metaphor for the disjointed, sensation-oriented experiences that pass for their characters’ lives. And both musicals flopped, Lippa’s off Broadway and Lachiusa’s on, despite stellar casts and scores memorable enough to become quick cult items when recorded. But in almost every other way the two parties are entirely different, and for me the sensational mounting...
