When it comes to “Big Brother,” Peter Salmon has skin in the game as the chief creative officer of Endemol Shine, which makes and sells the format. But back when it hit British screens, in 2000, he was at the BBC, and the show aired on rival pubcaster Channel 4. It quickly overshadowed the Beeb’s own attempt at TV-meets-social-experiment, “Castaway,” an altogether more sober show.
“We saw ‘Big Brother’ and it just did it properly and was the human experiment we imagined we might have done ourselves. And like everyone else, we were transfixed,” Salmon says. “The fact you could watch it unfold it in front of your eyes was and is an abiding principle. I remember it well. Everything changed at that point.”
Produced by John de Mol’s Endemol (years before the company aligned with Shine), the show started out in the Netherlands in 1999, on Rtl’s Veronica channel.

Celebrity Big Brother fans could be forgiven for feeling a bit of déjà vu when Chloe Jasmine strolled into the house - and not just because she was in The X Factor.
In fact, she's been in the CBB house before, performing backing vocals for Celebrity Big Brother 2006 winner Chantelle Houghton as a member of fictional girl group Kandy Floss during the show's wrap party.

Chloe Jasmine (in the orange skirt) certainly seemed to get into the performance of track 'I Want It Right Now', although it didn't exactly help her when she auditioned for The X Factor for the first time later that year.
Chantelle entered the Celebrity Big Brother house in 2006 with a mission to convince her celebrity housemates that she was a member of Kandy Floss, before 're-forming' the group for Ultimate Big Brother with housemates Victor Ebuwa and Nadia Almada.

Big Brother's Brian Belo believes that the other housemates are "petrified" of Helen Wood.
The eighth series winner left the house on Tuesday (June 23) by jumping over the wall, following further arguments with Helen and Marc O'Neill.
Speaking to Digital Spy and others, Brian said that more people in the house would have stood up to Helen if she wasn't so intimidating.
"I think the only other person to do it really was Danny," he commented. "That was the only other person.
"The other housemates are scared of Helen. They're absolutely petrified of her, so that's why they won't do it. And not only that - they're constantly thinking, 'Oh god, she might get to nominate and she might nominate me'. I knew it was my place because they were all too timid, really."
Brian continued: "More than anything, I was happy that Danny stuck up for me, and...

Big Brother does love a twist, so this Friday three former housemates will be returning to join the 'fake evictee' in a Secret Lair. And goodness, did that spark some conversations at DS Towers about who should return!
Of course, some of our picks have been on Ultimate Big Brother, but we're going to ignore that (we're not sure it's canon when Ulrika Jonsson can be dubbed an 'ultimate' housemate, to be honest). And while there are obviously plenty of amazing contestants from years gone by, we couldn't choose them all. But below are just some of our choices for Friday's big twist - let us know who you want to throw back in!
Nick 'Nasty Nick' Bateman (Big Brother 1)

Katie Hopkins has branded Nadia Sawalha a ''bully'' and accused her of being arrogant in the 'Celebrity Big Brother' house. The outspoken newspaper columnist clashed with Nadia throughout their time on the reality TV show and Katie claims they didn't just clash because Nadia was friends with her nemesis Perez Hilton but also because Nadia couldn't live with someone with different opinions to her her. She's been out of the Celebrity Big Brother house for less than 24 hours, but Katie Hopkins has already settled back into her controversial ways.
Speaking to reporters this morning, the runner-up shared her opinion on topics as diverse as Katie Price, being called a bully, Perez and, well, more on Katie Price.
Here are 8 of Hopkins's golden nuggets of wisdom following last night's Celebrity Big Brother final.
1. Hopkins on "dull" Katie Price walking away with the winner's title
"No, there's absolutely no part of Katie Price that deserved to win. She was dull as hell. She said she was boring as hell, she told Eamonn Holmes that she didn't deserve her fee – I reinforced that for her and told her she's been utterly turgid.
"She has no opinions on anything, no conversation to offer, and I frankly found her to be a very tedious individual."

We obviously had our reservations about Katie Hopkins before she entered the Celebrity Big Brother house, even though we'd long stopped listening to the 'controversial' comments she shrills on about.
We have to admit though that she has been a thoroughly entertaining housemate to watch - particularly during her humorous exchanges with Perez Hilton ("No isn't an option? What if you asked me suck your n*b?") and some genuinely funny, self-deprecating moments: ("Mine's [my vagina] like a battered old daffodil.")
While we're all for calling someone out for "being a tw*t", as Katie so succinctly put it during a Diary Room chat with Big Brother last week, we agreed with Nadia Sawalha when she pointed out that Katie Hopkins weakens her argument when she insults other people's physical attributes.
The Loose Women panelist was referring to an incident in the house when she had overheard Katie commenting on Nadia's "big,...

"I'm happy to own and stand by everything I said and did. It made me feel not so good to see how people were treating her."
Hilton added: "The Perez that Nadia got to know is the real Perez. I didn't want to share the real Perez with many of the housemates, as I don't care about the majority of the housemates, and they didn't want to get to know me.

The Miami model was nominated alongside Keith Chegwin, Perez Hilton and Katie Price in the show's shock twist which saw her leave the house on Monday night..

Speaking to Digital Spy and others about her sudden exit, she revealed: "It was expected. I thought I was going to be next to go. We all know Perez's arse ain't going."
On whether she was surprised that the public had kept her in for so long, she joked: "Yeah, They're a tortured bunch.

Nadia was negative about her experience in the house, but still admitted that she loves Big Brother now more than ever.

Katie Hopkins describes herself as a "haggard old git that tells it straight" during a frank admission in the Diary Room on Celebrity Big Brother tonight (January 29).

Katie Hopkins and Perez Hilton took their tumultuous relationship to new levels of unrestraint as a tongue-waggling Perez chased a terrified Katie around the house on Celebrity Big Brother last night (January 28).
Perez dramatically re-entered the house after living in a secret abode following his staged walkout, and "he's sweating horribly," was the first thing Katie H was finally able to muster.
But before long, he was trying to lick and kiss her face as she brushed him off and dubbed him a "rodent" and the pictures of the pair were priceless.

He offered a ceasefire, but alas, Kaite H would not relent.

Housemates had to nominate face-to-face in the house's communal area, by placing pictures of the two celebrity contestants they selected face down on the floor.
In scenes to be aired on tonight's show (January 29), Big Brother revealed that the housemates who will be facing the public vote in Friday's live eviction (January 30) are Nadia Sawalha, Katie Hopkins and Keith Chegwin.
After being voted by viewers to face eternal nomination, Perez Hilton automatically faces the public vote. Despite this, he was still allowed to make his two nominations.
When Big Brother revealed Perez's name, the showbiz blogger screamed: "Send me home, send me home!"
Nadia, who faced the public vote last week along with Katie H, told a surprised Keith: "Oh Keith, you'll be able to do the eviction shuffle. You've not done it yet."
Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight (January 29) at 9pm on Channel 5.

Perez Hilton started stirring up trouble in the house shortly after he re-entered during Celebrity Big Brother's live eviction last night (January 27).
Perez had been living in a secret room after staging a walkout as part of a task set by Big Brother. He was able to monitor the housemates' conversations.
In scenes to be aired in this evening's episode, the celebrity blogger catches up with Nadia Sawalha in the storeroom and asks her: "Do you really want to know who's been talking s**t about you?"
Later on, Perez insinuates to Katie Hopkins that she might not like a full disclosure to fellow housemates of what he observed in the secret room. Katie Hopkins replies: "I don't give a s**t what you saw."
In the snug area, Perez blabs to Nadia that Michelle Visage and Calum Best have been complaining about her control issues and saying that...

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Patsy Kensit has said that Nadia Sawalha is being "persecuted" for her friendship with Perez Hilton.
Speaking to reporters today, Patsy explained that she also feels sorry for Perez, who she claimed has been "ostracised" by most people in the group.
"The contained Perez is very funny and has got some really silly stories," she said. "Nadia is being persecuted by association, because she's an amazing woman. She's strong, she's kind, she's clever, she's wonderful."
She continued: "I've grown up - as has Nadia - in the business around flamboyant characters, very big, and we celebrate that. You chuckle, you laugh, and then you kind of walk away. A lot of people in the house come from different backgrounds. They're from reality or they're just a celebrity but haven't really been in the industry that we're in. So I can see it from both sides.
"There's definitely a divide.

Celebrity Big Brother evictee Patsy Kensit has joked that she thought she'd never be able to leave the house.
Patsy, who was evicted last night, told reporters today that the number of celebrities quitting and being removed from the house made the experience strange.
"The thing that was psychologically testing in there was we only saw two people walk up those stairs and out the door - so many people got thrown out or walked," she said. "So at one point I did actually say to Nadia [Sawalha], 'I've missed a clause in the contract. We're never getting out. We're not going to be released'."
She also commented on Ken Morley, who was removed from the house, saying: "[His behaviour] was really inappropriate, wasn't it? I mean, I told him where to go quite a few times. I wasn't going to take any of his stuff and I certainly wasn't going to let...

The celebrity blogger was asked by Big Brother to pick a housemate to face a list of questions he would provide.
Big Brother in turn would then ask the chosen housemate the series of questions - stating that they are from viewers, not from Perez.
Perez chose Katie Hopkins, who was immediately called to the Diary Room. On her way there, Nadia Sawalha told Cami-Li and Katie Price: "She's an exhibitionist in all the wrong ways."

Celebrity Big Brother's Alicia Douvall has taken part in a fiery argument involving Cami Li, Chloe Goodman and Nadia Sawalha.
In scenes airing tonight (Friday, January 16), Nadia took Alicia's side in the encounter.
"[I'm] backing up Alicia because you said she is worthless to know," the Loose Women panellist told Cami and Chloe as the conversation heated up.
Alicia - who was previously described as having only one brain cell by Katie Hopkins - then told the pair: "I'm not thick, I realise everything, you are taking me for a fool."
Alicia went on to suggest to Cami and Chloe that they are being manipulated by Katie, prompting a furious response.
"I feel sorry for you because you are thick and f**king dumb," the tattoo model shouted, adding: "I can go home to a family that loves me when obviously you don't [have that]."
A shocked Alicia then stormed out of the bedroom.

"I deal with drag queens on a daily basis. Perez Hilton is more of a diva than 20 drag queens all in one room." Michelle Visage summed up Perez Hilton to perfection on last night's Celebrity Big Brother (January 14).
You've definitely got to hand it to Perez. The over-zealous showbiz blogger has the ability to turn almost every single incident in the Celebrity Big Brother house into something All about Him.
And once you learn to take his "me, me, me, me" attitude (and most of what he says) with a pinch of salt, it can become rather amusing and entertaining to watch.
Here are a few of his most attention-seeking antics so far below, enjoy!
It's all about you... No, I mean me
From the moment he stepped into the Big Brother house, he was interrogating every single housemate for more personal - and at times - unsavoury details after clearly stalking researching each star.

While Nadia Sawalha urged them not to fall out over nominations - and advised Cami to calm Chloe down - Chloe said: "I can't be nice and then chat s**t."

But where will they fit in the record? Will they be a worthy winner, or a disappointment? Will they be looked back on with glee or with grimaces?
That remains to be seen, but in the meantime we have 14 winners to rank. Who is the best? Who is the worst? Last week, Channel 5 put out a press release revealing in shocked tones that for the first time ever, the show's daytime repeat would be pulled because of an "explosive" row - which ended up being a quite unpleasant tiff between Danielle and Helen, but not anything we haven't seen before in that famous house.
But go back ten years today - yes, ten years - and you'd hit on Big Brother 5 in 2004. And in just a few hours, the return of two housemates from a secret bedsit would be about to spark one of the biggest confrontations we've ever seen on television. Live.
Fight Night became a moment of television history. Big Brother had already pushed the boundaries with its novel concept, 24-hour live streaming and mix of housemates, but it was on June 16, 2004 that things changed. Was this exploitation? Bad planning? Tasteless? Or was it fascinating? Compelling? Horrifying?...

We've waited all summer, and we finally made it: "The Vampire Diaries: College Years."
Okay, okay, "The Vampire Diaries" isn't going to be changing its title, but we have to hand it to Julie Plec and co. -- they really made the transition from high school to college with nary a hiccup.
That could be because while half of the drama takes place at Whitmore College, the other half still took place in Mystic Falls, and the drama actually connects the two locales (unlike a certain Fox singing dramedy that literally split its story into two cities, and two completely different story lines, cough "Glee" cough). So what have our favorite vamps, werewolves, witches, hybrids, humans, hunters, and ghosts been up to during summer vacation?
Hello, Matt Donovan, the player
While traveling Europe with Rebekah, these two lovers picked up a third in Prague, and really got the party started.

Fancy watching some poor punter getting a back, sack and crack from Rustie Lee? Want a waxing from Helen Flanagan? Is Arg from Towie delivering pedicures what you've been waiting for all these years? Well, wait no more people. Celebrity Super Spa has arrived.
I've already had the joy of watching episode one of Super Spa. I've seen the awkward and cringeworthy hosts. I've seen Helen Flanagan prancing around without any trousers on. I've seen Rustie Lee cackling. 867 times.
And I'll probably watch it all over again tonight (September 13) when it airs on Channel 5. Firstly, because I'm a glutton for terrible television. Secondly, because I'm fairly convinced it may be the most desperate celebrity reality show ever concieved. Even by Channel 5's late night standards, this is awful. It makes The Bachelor look like The Sopranos.
So where does the show fit in the history of degrading and embarrassing celebrity reality shows?...

Wow. I did not see that coming, I literally screamed during the shocking cliffhanger moment from this past week’s episode. I can’t even imagine where this story is going next after that one. As I’ve said before, this storyline continues to be absolutely terrific and consistently entertaining and engaging. Yes, it’s your typical coming out drama, but the show gives us interesting twists and turns, some wonderful performances and fantastic writing to make this one of the best gay sagas currently running. There were a lot of nice moments I loved in this clip, but I first want to address something from last week’s episode since there was no column last week.
It was nice to see Kal and Tariq together again. Not because I want them to reunite, I’ve made it clear that would be unacceptable...

Ofcom has dismissed Nadia Almada's complaints that she was unfairly treated during her time on Ultimate Big Brother. The series five winner re-entered the Big Brother house along with previous housemates for a special farewell series last year. However, Almada complained that she was unfairly treated in the editing of a heated row with fellow contestant Coolio. The 34-year-old alleged that the edited version made her reaction to the rapper's behaviour appear unreasonable. She also claimed that he bullied her by making "transphobic and homophobic" comments towards her. However, in it's ruling Ofcom agreed with Channel 4 that footage of Coolio's "prank" on Almada had been "presented in the programme in a fair manner and was a truthful depiction of the incident". It went on to reveal that unedited footage had (more)...

Brian Dowling has admitted that he is always “insecure” about his popularity.
The Irish man – who won the second series of ‘Big Brother’ in 2001 and last year’s ‘Ultimate Big Brother’ special – admitted while he knows he is one of the most TV stars popular, he gets insecure because people expect him to be nice “all the time”.
He said: “I’m certainly the most popular person who ever lived in a house on television. But it’s made me more insecure because people expect me to be nice all the time.
“I’m not good at telling jokes, I don’t even get jokes. I just don’t take life too seriously and can take the p**s out of myself.”

Big Brother stars Josie Gibson and John James Parton have revealed that if they do decide to tie the knot, they will do so in a quick Las Vegas ceremony.
The pair, who met on the latest series of the Channel 4 reality TV show, revealed that they would include Nadia Almada on their guest list, despite her recent comments about their relationship.
‘If we were gonna get married, I think we’d do a little trip to Vegas,’ Josie told Now magazine. ‘Nadia will definitely be invited the wedding. I like Nads.’
John and Josie are currently shacked up together in their new Chelsea love pad, but the BB11 winner thinks it’s still too early for a proposal.
‘I’d faint!’ she admitted. ‘It’s a bit early, isn’t it?’

Nadia Almada has given her first TV interview since she left the Ultimate Big Brother house and shed some light on her subsequent breakdown and suicide bid.
The 33 year old shot to fame as the winner of Big Brother Five and claims that on her return to the final series of the show, she was bullied and victimised by American rap star Coolio. She also insists that footage of her was badly edited by Channel 4 and Endemol and key interactions and breakdowns were not shown, so that she would look worse to the voting public.
Speaking on This Morning, with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Nadia blasted the TV show saying:
“You cannot trust Endemol/Big Brother anymore. They’ve lost the focus of a social experiment that they had initally, now it’s more of an entertainment platform.”
She added:
“I was assured that it was going to be a celebration,...

Big Brother star Nadia Almada has admitted that she may have picked the wrong moment to approach Josie Gibson about her boyfriend John James Parton, but added that she stands by all the comments she made.
When Almada first met BB11 winner Josie in the Ultimate Big Brother house, she told her:
‘I don’t think he likes you as much as you like him.’
‘His kisses don’t seem real, it’s as if he’s afraid of women. Maybe he was traumatised as a a child, I don’t know.’
The statement sowed seeds of doubt in Josie’s head and led to her walking out of the house and into John James arms just a few days later.
In an interview with This Morning today, Nadia admitted that she could have picked a better moment to raise her concerns. She said:
My timing was completely wrong, I...
