Santa Claus first appeared on film all the way back in 1898, when he starred in a short film by George Albert Smith called, appropriately, "Santa Claus." In it, a silent Santa sneaks across a rooftop, climbs down a chimney, and leaves gifts for a little girl and boy who are nestled in their beds.
Ever since, holiday films have been stuffed with depictions of Father Christmas. Some are nice, and some are naughty. Some are jolly, and some are degenerate. Most are merry, but a few are murderous. Many films try to put their own spin on the Santa mythos, too, trying to make their St. Nick stand out from the pack of present-carrying holiday patriarchs. But others simply try to spread holiday joy, offering something jolly to put on while you sip hot cocoa and trim the tree.

James McAvoy has firmly denied his involvement in a reboot of the Narnia films.
The Atonement and Split actor played Mr Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005.
As the friendly faun – a man-goat hybrid – McAvoy starred with Tilda Swinton and a child cast of William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, and Georgie Henley as the Pevensie siblings: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.
The Narnia franchise continued with Prince Caspian in 2008 and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. To date, the films have grossed a total of 1.5bn (£1.24bn) worldwide.
In a recent interview with GQ, McAvoy responded to a question about the prospect of appearing in a reboot of the Narnia films in the future.
When asked whether the creators had approached him with an offer to take part, McAvoy exclaimed: “Have they f***!”

Georgie Henley, an actress best known for playing the character Lucy Pevensie in three films in the Chronicles of Narnia franchise, has opened up about a terrifying health struggle she went through ten years ago.
Henley wrote a lengthy post on Twitter which was attached to a photo showing the scars from her ordeal. She revealed that the infection was called necrotizing fasciitis, which she said nearly killed her and also almost resulted in the amputation of her left hand and arm.
She said she managed to avoid amputation due to “grueling invasive surgery, and later extensive reconstructive surgery which resulted in a series of skin grafts and scars.”
Henley said that while she was open about the situation to close friends, she always hid the scars “in a professional context.” She explained her reasoning for this soon after. “The industry I am part of often focuses on a very...

The Chronicles of Narnia star Georgie Henley is opening up about a health scare she’s kept secret from the public for nearly a decade.
Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, the actress — who portrayed Lucy in the Chronicles of Narnia films — revealed that when she was 18 she contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a “rare and punishing infection that nearly claimed my life and wrought havoc throughout my body.”
The infection led to the actress almost having to have her left hand and arm amputated. “In order to prevent the amputation of my left hand and arm I received grueling invasive surgery, and later extensive reconstruction surgery which resulted in a series of skin grafts and scars,” she wrote.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, necrotizing fasciitis is “a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly in the body and can cause death.” The...

Georgie Henley, who played Lucy Pevensie in “The Chronicles of Narnia” film trilogy, revealed on Tuesday that when she was in college, a rare bacterial infection nearly led to the amputation of her right arm. After a series of “grueling” surgeries and grafts, doctors were able to save it, but she was left with scarring that she concealed from the public for nearly 10 years.
The actress, who is now 27, shared a photo to Twitter of herself showing off the scars on her arm, along with the caption, “finally free.”
In the accompanying screenshots, she wrote, “When I was eighteen years old and in my sixth year of university, I contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and punishing infection that nearly claimed my life and wrought havoc throughout my body. Game of Thrones is readying a return to Westeros in 2022 with House of the Dragon. Set around 200 years in the past, during the height of the Targaryens’ incestuous, dragon-riding royal reign, the series is the first of HBO’s ongoing prequel pursuits. However, it also represents an enormously expensive mulligan, since it arrives in the aftermath of an extravagant pilot produced for a completely different prequel project, which was not picked up and still languishes unseen by audiences. Interestingly, new details have surfaced regarding the nixed project’s price tag and how it directly led to the prequel series that will ultimately arrive.
While HBO’s initial Game of Thrones prequel attempt never bore an official title, reports revealed it to be a story of ancient proportions, set thousands of years earlier, which—based on the elaborate history in creator George R.R. Martin’s literary lore—earned it de facto...

One spinoff of Game of Thrones is not enough for HBO.
The premium cabler is reportedly developing a prequel based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas about Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen).
Variety first reported the exciting news, but there has been no official comment from HBO.
It is the third spinoff to land at HBO since the hit original series ended its eight-season run in 2019.
House of the Dragon nabbed a formal series order last year and will follow the Targaryen family, as told in another of Martin's novels.
However, the cast only took shape in recent months, with Matt Smith (Doctor Who) playing Prince Daemon Targaryen and Paddy Considine (The Outsider) as King Viserys.
Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) is also on board as Alicent Hightower, the Hand of the King’s daughter, and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, King Viserys’ eldest child.

To celebrate the eagerly-anticipated release of The Spanish Princess Part 2, we sat down with its incredible cast and show-runners to find out about the new season and why the show has hit such a chord with audiences so far.
Released last year, the first season was a huge success and the plan was always to spread Catherine of Aragorn’s story over two time periods to fully immerse the audience in the story, as told to us by showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham. But the themes of the show about women, race, politics, economics, and more pierce through time and are as relevant as they were back in the 15th century, echoed by the show’s cast.
We chatted to Charlotte Hope, Laura Carmichael, Georgie Henley, Ruiari O’Connor, Stephanie Levi-John and showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham.
“The Spanish Princess Part II” continues the story of Queen Catherine and Henry VIII.

Children of the 2000s may have grown up with the three live-action movies produced between 2005-2008 and anyone of any generation may have read C.S. Lewis’ classic novels as a kid, but a new version of The Chronicles of Narnia is on the way. Netflix acquired the rights to adapt the seven fantasy books back in 2018 and immediately announced their plans to create new TV series and films based on the world of Narnia.

The world of Game of Thrones may be expanding, but the prequel starring Naomi Watts is dead in the water.
Deadline first reported the news that the series written by Jane Goldman will not be getting a formal series order at the premium cable network.
The news is a little surprising given the talent associated with the series. It was poised to become the first in a long line of series that would be set before the parent series.
HBO has yet to confirm the news, but Deadline notes that Goldman, who also served as showrunner, has been contacting the cast and crew to let them know the show is not moving forward.
A pilot was filmed earlier this year, so it did make it far into the development process, but given that this will be a spinoff of one of the most popular shows in the world, expectations were high.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts is not going to series at HBO, Variety has confirmed with sources.
The cast and crew of the pilot were recently informed that HBO had passed on the project. The potential series was set to take place thousands of years prior to the events of the original series.
HBO declined to comment.
In addition to Watts, the pilot starred Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, Toby Regbo, Miranda Richardson, Marquis Rodriquez, John Simm, Richard McCabe, John Heffernan, and Dixie Egerickx.
Jane Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin, whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel series served as the basis for “Game of Thrones.” Goldman and Martin wrote the story, with Goldman writing the teleplay. She would also have served as showrunner. She and Martin were executive producers along with Sj Clarkson,...

HBO is going to back to Westeros… again. The pay-cable network is nearing a pilot order for a second spinoff of its hugely popular “Game of Thrones” series, this one based on the Targaryen family, TheWrap has learned.
HBO declined to comment on the potential spinoff, which was first reported by Deadline, but an individual with knowledge of the project confirmed the report’s accuracy to TheWrap.
The series is from “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin and “Colony” co-creator Ryan Condal. It would be set 300 years before the events of the HBO fantasy series, which wrapped its eight-season run earlier this year. Representatives for Condal and Martin did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Turns out George R.R. Martin may not have been getting your hopes up about additional “Game of Thrones” spinoffs after all.
Soon after HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour Wednesday that production had wrapped on the untitled “GoT” prequel pilot starring Naomi Watts, he told TheWrap the pay-tv channel is still “possibly” considering ordering pilots for additional spinoff projects that are in development.
“I think we have one or two more scripts,” he told us. “But we’re gonna see what happens with this one.”
Bloys wouldn’t say if he meant the decision to order another pilot will be made after this one (which is now in editing) is or isn’t ordered to series, or after the potential show airs. Actually, he wouldn’t...

Production has wrapped on HBO’s Naomi Watts-led “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot, which began shooting in Belfast, Ireland this summer, Casey Bloys said during the Television Critics Association press tour on Wednesday.
The HBO programming boss also addressed the online petition that was started by fans asking the pay-tv channel to remake the final season of “GoT” with “competent writers” (a dig at showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss) which he says “shows a lot of enthusiasm.”
“Look, I take all of the activity around the finale as — there are very, very few downsides to having a hugely popular show, but one I can think of is when you try to end it, many people have big opinions on how it should end,” Bloys told reporters. “I think that just comes with the territory.”

HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel has yet to be given an official title, but that’s not stopping George R.R. Martin from trying to dub it himself. The author has referred in the past to the series as The Long Night, which the network has denied as being the name. In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, however, the writer revealed what he hopes to be the moniker for the show when all is said and done.
“I heard a suggestion that it could be called The Longest Night, which is a variant I wouldn’t mind,” he says. “That would be pretty good.”
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but such a title would be a fitting representation of how many fans feel on Sunday nights now that the original series is over. The prequel has been filming under the production label of Blood Moon, though...

While many fans are still trying to rid their mouth of the sour taste left by the show’s final season (I know I am), it looks like HBO is moving forward with a Game of Thrones prequel, which is rumored to take place 10,000 years before the story laid out in A Song of Ice and Fire. Of course, there’s still plenty up in the air, as the network has remained rather quiet on the specifics of their new show.
That being said, it’s not as if viewers have been left entirely in the dark. Developed under the codename ‘Blood Moon,’ HBO’s spinoff already boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo. Somewhere deep within HBO towers, plans are afoot for a Game of Thrones prequel series – but not just any prequel series, one which takes place a full 10,000 years before A Song of Ice and Fire.
Said to be working under the codename ‘Blood Moon,’ HBO’s prehistoric spinoff has already amassed a fantastic ensemble cast, which boasts Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.
And with filming already underway across parts of Belfast and Northern Ireland, it’s becoming increasingly clear that HBO is hoping to fast-track this Thrones prequel series for a late 2020/early 2021 premiere. There’s just one issue: it likely won’t enjoy the same levels of success as its predecessor. Or so says George R.R. Martin himself, who knows a thing or two about the mystical worlds of Westeros and Essos.

One by one, HBO has whittled down its list of potential Game of Thrones successor series.
At the outset, it was reported that the network was exploring five – count ’em, five – story pitches from a variety of top-tier scribes, including Jane Goldman (Kingsman) and George R.R. Martin himself. The former has made serious headway on her treatment (working title: ‘The Long Night’), given HBO has already cast Miranda Richardson, Jamie Campbell Bower, Toby Regbo, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Naomi Ackie.
And while that’s an incredibly exciting development, particularly as Thrones season 8 approaches its last hurrah, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that producer-director Bryan Cogman’s proposed series is effectively dead at HBO.
I’m definitely leaving. I was developing one of the successor shows with George. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane, whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen.

With sumptuous costumes and a cast including a couple of familiar and beloved costume-drama players, Starz’s “The Spanish Princess,” about the travails of Catherine of Aragon, seems designed to appeal to lovers of broadly drawn historical romance. And yet it’s hard to imagine anyone outside the core constituency for royals and the games they play finding much of interest in “The Spanish Princess”: Baroque in its attention to detail, but telling its version of history strictly for the fandom.

HBO is rounding out its ensemble cast for its Game Of Thrones prequel pilot. Marquis Rodriguez (When They See Us), John Simm (Strangers), Richard McCabe (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams), John Heffernan (Dracula) and Dixie Egerickx (The Secret Garden) are set as series regulars in the drama pilot from writer Jane Goldman and author/Got co-executive producer George R.R. Created by Goldman and Martin and written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin, the untitled prequel takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. It chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.

The Game of Thrones prequel pilot is adding a Harry Potter star to its ranks.
According to Deadline, Miranda Richardson is the latest addition to the cast of the pilot.
No details about her role have been revealed, and that's not a surprise. Despite some teases, much of the characters the cast will be playing has been kept under wraps.
Richardson joins a cast that already includes Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp, and Toby Regbo.
Much like the original series, the cast for the prequel is poised to be bursting at the seams.
