- She was awarded the AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) in the 1988 Queen's Birthday Honours List for her services to Media.

- The National Trust of Australia voted Jones an Australian Living Treasures in 1997.
- Jones received a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) degree at the University of Sydney on 6 August 2017.
- Granddaughter of Australian newspaper publisher Ashley Needham Pountney, who was the editor of some of the first newspapers in northwest New South Wales including the Murrurundi Times, The Werris Creek Express and Quirindi Advocate.
- In 1989, Jones was awarded the Archbishop of Sydney Citation in recognition of her contribution to Christian ideals in radio and television.
