He graduated in 1954 from Princeton University, where he studied musicology and wrote a thesis on Verdi. Then he served in the Army.
He was the Metropolitan Opera's director of archives for 34 years. He helped in the creation of a digital database that includes details from every performance since the Met opened with Gounod's "Faust" in 1883.
