Something supernatural is waiting for Madison when she returns to her childhood home, and it isn't exactly rolling out the welcome mat in Darkness Rising, a new horror film from IFC Midnight. Ahead of the film's release later this month, a new set of stills and a motion poster hint at the horrors to come.
Directed by Austin Reading from a screenplay by Vikram Weet, Darkness Rising stars Tara Holt, Katrina Law, Bryce Johnson, Heather Mazur, and Ted Raimi. IFC Midnight will release Darkness Rising in theaters and on VOD beginning June 30th.

Some childhood homes hold good memories. This isn't one of them. For Madison, visiting the house where she grew up—and was nearly killed—is not a pleasant experience, and although she escaped death within its walls once before, the past isn't done with her yet, as evidenced by the spooky new trailer for Darkness Rising, a new IFC Midnight horror film with a cast that includes Ted Raimi.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director: Renny Harlin. Writer: Vikram Weet. Cast: Holly Goss, Matt Stokoe, Luke Albright, Ryan Hawley and Gemma Atkinson. The Devil's Pass aka The Dyatlov Pass Incident is a found footage film from director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2). This title takes on a non-fiction event, the death of nine Russian hikers, and turns it into fiction, with the introduction of time travel. Five American characters and documentarians grate on the nerves, while the film struggles to build speed and tension. The Devil's Pass is just another average found footage film, in this overcrowded sub-genre. The story begins with five American university students. They are all really excited! to travel to the Ural Mountains, in Russia. Here, they hope to unravel a fifty year old mystery: the death of nine experienced hikers. These hikers were found mostly naked,...

The Dyatlov Pass Incident
Written by Vikram Weet
Directed by Renny Harlin
USA, 2013
The contest between scepticism and belief in the supernatural is a reliable means of drawing out a narrative before any sort of big reveal. It’s a dynamic through which the television classic The X-Files operated, featuring the passionate Fox Mulder, who worked to convince cohort Dana Scully of “the truth.” Around this back-and-forth between two audience surrogates situates the dubious involvement of man: how much do the higher-ups truly know about what is going on, and what are they keeping from us?
Renny Harlin’s The Dyatlov Pass Incident borrows a few of these tricks. Its fictional found-footage accompanies a group of five American hikers into the Ural Mountains as they retrace the steps of nine souls who died in mysterious, real-life circumstances some 50 years ago. Hypothermia, avalanches, and other possible causes of death have since been ruled out,...

What began as a clever idea cooked up by filmmakers with more ingenuity than production money has now become a low-budget playground for filmmakers of every race, creed, nationality, and age bracket. We're talking (once again) about "found footage" horror cinema, that recently omnipresent filmmaking presentation that asks the viewer to "buy" that they're watching actual video material.
Although largely the domain of independents both American (The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Grave Encounters) and imported (Troll Hunter, [Rec], Lake Mungo), the "found footage" hook has also enticed filmmakers as varied as Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), George Romero (Diary of the Dead), and Barry Levinson (The Bay). So clearly there's something about the gimmick that appeals to filmmakers and film watchers in equal measure, and now we have another veteran ready to take a swing at the format.

A deliciously ooky, X-Files-esque chiller that’s a scary-fun hoot and a half; a lean, smart example of the found-footage flick. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

There was a real “Dyatlov Pass Incident,” in 1959: nine hikers died on a remote Russian mountain in mysterious circumstances that no one has, to this day, yet been quite able to adequately explain. I have no doubt that the mysteriousness of those authentic historical circumstances has been somewhat exaggerated for this fictional investigation, but I’m absolutely fine with that, because as a result, we get a deliciously ooky, X-Files-esque chiller that’s a scary-fun hoot and a half. Five university kids from Oregon, led by psychology student Holly (Holly Goss), set out to retrace the route followed by Igor Dyatlov and his friends in the hopes...

Devil May Care: Harlin Gets on the Found Footage Train
Renny Harlin, a name synonymous with big budgeted 90s action flicks (and, debatably, the demise of Geena Davis’ mainstream career) has been steadily working on a bevy of B-grade (or worse) ventures for the past decade. So it’s no surprise to see him turn up attached to a found footage horror film, joining a legion of names in a genre that’s cheaply produced and mostly just cheap. Let it be said, however, that comparatively, Harlin’s Devil’s Pass happens to be one of the less offensive of its kind, though it falls victim to the regular shortcomings and feels lifted from some “Unsolved Mysteries” snippet.
In 1959, a group of nine Russian hikers are found dead in the Ural Mountains, an autopsy revealing that they died simultaneously, cause of death unknown. A group of five modern day college...

Just yesterday, I was questioning the domestic release status of Renny's Harlin's The Dyatlov Pass Incident and, look at this, we have an update.
The found footage film - now called Devil's Pass - was acquired by IFC Midnight and an August 23rd release date has been set. That's rather soon.
If you'd like to watch the official trailer, follow this link where the preview debuted at IMDb.
Harlin directed from a script by Vikram Weet.

Stars: Richard Reid, Gemma Atkinson, Matt Stokoe, Luke Albright, Holly Goss | Written by Vikram Weet | Directed by Renny Harlin
Based on a true story:
In February, 1959, nine Russians hikers ventured into the Ural Mountains on a trip that should have been manageable for a group with their vast experience. Two weeks later, all nine were discovered dead. A search party found the hikers’ tents ripped open from the inside and all seemed to have died from hypothermia. Aside from a few fractures and broken bones, there appeared to be indication of foul play. With no compelling evidence or witnesses to account for the puzzling night, the case quickly fell into legendary infamy. Many have theorized that a small avalanche caught them off guard, forced them to cut through their tents and make an escape into their snowy surroundings where they froze. The riddle has baffled investigators, researchers and authorities ever since.

Earlier this year, Dr. Dre, via his relatively young Crucial Films production company (launched in 2007), stepped in to produce a horror/thriller titled Thaw, from a script penned by Vik Weet, based on an original idea by Dre's production company partner Daniel Schnider. The story will center on an ancient evil that emerges from the rapidly melting ice in the Yukon. No word on cast yet. I believe it's still in the script stage. Crucial Films, by the way, has a first-look deal at New Line Cinema. But while we wait for that project to develop, Dre will flex his producer skills on TV - specifically, on FX. The deal between Dre and FX is for a...
