A new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook is currently in development. Ella: An American Miracle will receive an Aug. 25-Sept. 21 work session, with Tony-winner Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charity Angél Dawson portraying the iconic singer at different points in her life.
The work session will conclude with a private industry presentation. A production timeline was not disclosed.
“Composers wanted Ella Fitzgerald to sing their songs because listening to her, they knew how their songs were supposed to be sung,” said Smith in a statement. “A jazz singer, a scat singer, she also famously both sang and defined the American song book. To say she had humble beginnings is a profound understatement. She sang America through some of its most discordant times. She was America’s love song. She was an American miracle.”

The real-life struggles that The Ms. Pat Show draws its material from seem more ripe for a gritty, sobering drama than broad, punchline-driven comedy.
Poverty. Drug addiction. Childhood abuse. A criminal past. It doesn’t exactly scream out laugh-a-minute.
But its star, Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams, long ago found that using comedy to plow through life’s pain was the key to her success. Not only has her approach resulted in a sitcom that’s a fledgling hit on BET+, it has transformed her as well: “Comedy has healed me so much.”
Unlike most sitcoms, this one is firmly anchored around the stand-up comic’s unlikely rise from society’s margins to attain the American dream. In real life and on TV, Ms. Pat is no stereotypical TV mom. Think Roseanne of the 1980s and 1990s, but even rawer. The show, which kicked off its second season Aug.

HBO announced that the final season of “Insecure” will premiere on Oct. 24 and released a first look at the season.
“I keep frontin’ everybody like I’m not scared about what’s next for me, but I am terrified,” Issa Rae’s character Issa says in a teaser, which you can watch below.
The comedy follows the trials, heartaches and twists of L.A.-based Issa and those closest to her as they navigate love, life, friendship and adapting to newfound responsibilities in their 30s.
Viewers last saw Issa and Lawrence (Jay Ellis) attempting to reconcile, but things got messy when his other ex, Condola (Christina Elmore), told him she was pregnant and planning on keeping the baby. Issa and Molly’s (Yvonne Orji) friendship was strained, while Molly’s relationship with Andrew (Alexander Hodge) came to an end. Family sitcom The Ms. Pat Show, based on the titular comedian’s stand-up comedy and memoir, didn’t have the easiest road to BET+, executive producer Lee Daniels revealed during a the show’s TCA panel on Tuesday.
According to the Oscar-nominated director, the comedy’s creative team “went through the wringer trying to bring this to light.” For Daniels, bringing Ms. Pat’s humor and memoir to screen was a “no-brainer.” However, momentum slowed when trying to find a home for the series. The series was initially set up at Fox with a different writer during the 2016-17 season, then moved to Hulu in fall 2019 and eventually landed at BET+ in 2020.
“Years before, we tried to find the right writer, right visionary for it, trying fight studios and networks that wanted to do it but were afraid to do it because it was too black and was too real,...

Chicago – Sometimes high energy and spirited charisma are enough to redeem a mediocre musical, and that is precisely what “Memphis” has in spades. It’s not a wholly derivative show by any means, but it does tread through familiar troubled waters. Modern Broadway classics like “Hairspray” have already effectively illustrated that “Rock ’n’ roll is just Negro blues sped up.”
That memorable line is delivered late in “Memphis” by Felicia Ferrell (Montego Glover), a black club singer who becomes a singing sensation once she’s discovered by a smitten white DJ, Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball), a character loosely based on Dewey Phillips. Racial tensions dissolve as music proves to be a uniting force. Yet while still under the threat of attacks in the ’50s-era South, Huey and Felicia must decide whether to stay put or make the move to the Big Apple.

Live productions of the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis, will be filmed in the coming weeks, for a planned nationwide theatrical run in this spring.
Recall, last spring, I posted an entry announcing that the musical had drawn Hollywood’s interest – specifically, Justin Timberlake was said to be interested in adapting the musical to film, likely as a starring vehicle for himself; and director Oliver Stone, a big fan of the show, had been meeting and talking with David Bryan, one of the show’s creators and its composer, expressing his interest in making a film out of it.
But neither of those two potentials are connected to the theatrical distribution of live recordings, planned for this spring.
The musical stars Chad Kimball and Montego Glover (pictured bottom-right) as a young white rocker and black singer in love, in the 1950s segregated South.

"The challenge in doing a Stephen Sondheim show is that the bar is raised so high," says Aaron Lazar, who plays the buffoonish Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in the Broadway revival of "A Little Night Music." "You want to make Steve happy; you want him to approve. Some great actors have been part of Steve's work. You want to feel you have been cast well."It's a tall order, but no taller than the challenges facing five other singing actors appearing on the Main Stem in productions representing an array of musical genres—from punk rock to rhythm and blues to golden oldies of the 1950s. Lazar, who is a veteran musical-theater performer, says Sondheim's lyrics are so specifically written for each character, "if you lose your place, it's not easy to ad-lib. I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't going over the words to the songs backstage before I go on.

I’ve seen a handful of plays and musicals on Broadway in recent months – including Race, Fela! and Fences – but the Tony Award-nominated Memphis is one that I haven’t seen; although, given what I now know about it, I might check it out.
First, there’s the story which, loosely based on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, takes place in the 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, and centers on a young white rocker named Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) who falls in love a black singer, played by Montego Glover (that’s her in the photo on the left, and below right), a Tony Award nominee for her performance in the Best Actress In A Musical category.
From the musical’s website: He’s a young, white radio DJ named Huey Calhoun, whose love of music transcends race lines and airwaves. She’s a black singer named Felicia Farrell, whose career is on the rise,...

J. Bernard Calloway is heating up the Broadway stage since rave reviews of him in The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter. I had the opportunity to speak to the new Broadway star about working with Denzel Washington, his Hollywood marriage and his plans for the future. Your career is really blowing up. What does it feel like to have rave reviews in the New York Times and Hollywood Reporter? Feels like continuity to a prosperous and long career. I always pray for work that is meaningful, true, and respected by my peers and fans! You're now a big Broadway star but life hasn't always been that easy for you. Tell me what life was like for you before you hit it big? Life before Broadwaya and Pelham was a lot of regional theatre, featured spots on tv series, commercials, and...
