Over the weekend the American Cinema Editors (Ace) held their annual awards, where The Social Network, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 took honors for feature editing in the dramatic, comedy/musical and animated categories. But the highlight of the night may have been the lifetime achievement award given to Michael Kahn, presented by Steven Spielberg. That award was accompanied by a reel highlighting the master editor's many credits, and in the spirit of celebrating someone who has been an invaluable but often invisible contributor to many of the films we love, we present the highlight reel after the break. Mr. Kahn's long collaboration with Steven Spielberg dominates this reel, but there are a handful of other major films represented here, too. The fact that one man has been instrumental to so many major films of the last forty years is simply staggering. (With respect to that collaboration with Steven Spielberg,...

Harrison Ford in Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark, edited by Michael Kahn The Social Network, which of late had been losing Oscar ground to The King's Speech, was the dramatic feature winner at the American Cinema Editors' Awards ("Eddies") ceremony held earlier this evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. [List of Ace Award winners.] Editors Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter beat the editors of The King's Speech, The Fighter, Black Swan, and even Lee Smith's showy work on Christopher Nolan's Inception. The best edited comedy or musical feature was, surprisingly, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which is neither a comedy nor a musical. Editor Chris Lebenzon beat the editors of The Kids Are All Right, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Made in Dagenham, and Easy A. Toy Story 3's Ken Schretzmann and Lee Unkrich won for Best Animated Feature, while Exit Through the Gift Shop's...

American Cinema Editors (Ace) tonight announced the winners for the 61st Annual Ace Eddie Awards recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries. Winners were revealed during Ace’s 61st annual black-tie awards ceremony in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Christopher Nolan received the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while Career Achievement honors were bestowed on veteran film editors Michael Brown, A.C.E. and Michael Kahn, A.C.E. Director Joe Sargeant presented to Brown, with Steven Spielberg presenting to Kahn. The Ace Eddie Awards is considered an integral precursor to the Oscars; no film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981. Since the Ace membership boasts a very high crossover within its membership of Academy members, it is considered a very accurate bellweather for the...

"The Social Network" was named the Best Edited Dramatic Film by the American Cinema Editors on Saturday night at the 61st annual edition of their honors. The team of Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall prevailed over those who edited "Black Swan," "The Fighter," Inception" and "The King's Speech." It also won this same prize at the BAFTAs last week, where craft awards are decided on by the specific branches of the British academy. This Best Edited Comedy or Musical was "Alice in Wonderland" with Chris Lebenzon winning over the editors of "Easy A," "The Kids Are All Right," "Made in Dagenham" and "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World." The Ace award for Best Edited Animated Feature went to Ken Schretzmann and Lee Unkrich for "Toy Story 3" over the teams from "Despicable Me" and "How to Train Your Dragon" while Tom Fulford and Chris King took the documentary...

Another feather is now in the cap of David Fincher's The Social Network and this is a big one as the American Cinema Editors have awarded it and its editing team, consisting of Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall, top honors in the drama category. Network beat out fellow nominees Black Swan (Andrew Weisblum), The Fighter (Pamela Martin), Inception (Lee Smith) and The King's Speech (Tariq Anwar). As for the Oscar nominations, by comparison, the only difference in nominees is 127 Hours was nominated rather than Inception.
The Eddie nominees were announced on January 14, and back then I wrote, "If Network gets the win we can pretty much close the door on the Oscars." I also mentioned the notable statistic that six out of the last ten winners of the Eddie in the Best Feature Film (Dramatic) category have gone on to win Oscar's Best Picture. On top of that, the...

Last night's fourth annual Cinema Eye Honors, the awards show dedicated entirely to documentary excellence, belonged to street artist Banksy. His film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" took home two awards including the film's top prize for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking and the man himself delivered the acceptance speech of the night. Well, not quite the man himself, since Banksy was a no show (obviously, since nobody outside of one random seller on eBay). But "Gift Shop" producer Jaimie D'Cruz, accepting the award on Banksy's behalf, read some words the man himself had prepared. And they were fantastic. After some pleasantries, D'Cruz got down to business. I had my tape recorder rolling. Here was Banksy's speech:
"Now's not the time for long, rambling speeches. I'll leave that for the director of 'Waiting for Superman.'
I'd like to thank the Cinema Eye awards. It's great...

Front-runner for most overlooked/under-appreciated category of filmmaking is editing. A well-edited film goes unnoticed amongst the majority of filmgoers (Black Swan, How To Train Your Dragon), while sometimes the game-changing editing sticks out (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Social Network), and then poor editing can further ruin a stinker (Iron Man 2, The Last Airbender).
Along with the Oscar nominations, each year the American Cinema Editors (Ace) aim to reward the best editing with the Ace Eddie Awards. Deadline notes that Christopher Nolan will receive the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award and that “no film has won Best Picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a Best Editing nomination since Ordinary People in 1981.” This year, the nominees have been revealed and you can see them below.

Recent winners of the American Cinema Editors (Ace) Eddie Awards for best film editing have gone to The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, The Departed, Crash, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Chicago and Gladiator. I think you get my drift, but if not six out of the last ten films to win the Eddie in the Best Feature Film (Dramatic) category have gone on to win Oscar's Best Picture and I think we can call it seven out of eleven at this point as it doesn't really matter what film you believe is going to win Best Picture, it's likely among this group.
I woke up this morning to a massive email chain from Oscar bloggers including those from Awards Daily, ComingSoon.net, The Film Experience, In Contention and Cinematical, all of which were discussing the absence of Joel and Ethan Coen's pseudonym Roderick Jaynes...

Michael C. back again from Serious Film. It's time to wrap up the first season of Unsung Heroes and I thought what better way to do that than to focus on a film that's still in the 2010 conversation while there's a chance to upgrade its status from "unsung" to "frequently honored".
The editing of Banksy’s Exit Through the Gift Shop would be a long shot even if it didn’t come from a documentary. The fact that it does puts its chances for recognition outside of a guild award somewhere just shy of nonexistent. Too bad since I saw no more effective use of montage at theaters in 2010, communicating a variety of complicated ideas while on the surface telling a simple, compelling narrative.
If you didn’t know anything about how awards voters marked their ballots you might logically assume that documentaries would have a big advantage in the...
