The backdrop is hard to beat. Motorists driving from and towards Columbus Circle begin turning on their headlights as magic hour gives way to a rainy spring evening. A haze engulfs the hovering statue of this hemisphere's fabled discoverer, moisture settles in on the lush, lower half of Central Park and as the band begins to play, a portal to another era is opened. This is Swinging with the Big Bands at Jazz at Lincoln Center and if the powerful and emotive Sounds of Swing are something that fill you with romantic joy then, unless you possess powers of time travel, you couldn't do much better this.

Title: Downtown Express Director: David Grubin Starring: Philippe Quint, Nellie McKay, Michael Cumpsty, Ashley Springer, Carolyn McCormick An old-fashioned, squarely sentimental immigrants’ tale that marries a familiar story of generational rebellion to the New York hipster fusion music scene, director David Grubin’s “Downtown Express” is a wide-eyed if not particularly adroit charmer. If its awkward cycling through various stodgy subplots and general lack of a more starkly defined contrast and stakes mark it as somewhat lazy and functional on a narrative level, its relative freshness of setting — as well as the fact that its music absolutely sings — makes the movie a marginal recommendation for those with an interest in musically-focused cinema. Since her 2004 debut album Get Away From Me, musician Nellie McKay has proved herself to be astonishingly versatile. The London-born, New York-raised songstress can change genres during the running time of a single tune. "Sari" features her rapping to a Bach-like accompaniment, and "I Want to Get Married" sounds romantic and even a bit creepy because the subject of the tune is losing one's own identity in a relationship. The gentle piano chords hide some pretty disturbing lyrics. She also offered a sincere appreciation for the artistry of Doris Day in her Normal as Blueberry Pie album, and her Home Sweet Mobile Home album is something we in Kansas can relate to. It's not that McKay is merely flitting with styles or even media; she's astonishingly good at whatever musical instrument she touches or even which medium she chooses. She won a Theatre World Award for playing Polly Peachum in...

Singer, songwriter, comedienne, actress and all around career gal Nellie McKay likes to give off an air of scatter-brained goofiness. But in fact she doesn't have just the comic timing of Gracie Allen of Burns & Allen fame. She also has Allen's smarts. (George Burns always insisted Gracie was the brains of the act.) McKay has had a turbulent career that she cheerfully admits to inadvertently sabotaging one way or another from the start. But she's also moved steadily upwards in the public eye, from her double CD debut on Sony (perhaps the first by a female artist) to her acclaimed turn on Broadway in a revival of The Threepenny Opera. Now she's back on a major label -- in this case, the artist-friendly Verve, home to Teddy Thompson and others -- with her fourth album, Normal As Blueberry Pie,...

With her blond hair, winsome smile, and beguiling voice, Nellie McKay could be our postmodern Doris Day (though “McKay” rhymes with “dye” rather than “day”). The 27-year-old has made three albums of her own tunes—piano-based, genre-defying songs that combine traditional sounds with sharply intelligent, sometimes acerbic lyrics. On October 13, she’s releasing a Doris Day tribute album, Normal As Blueberry Pie—with nary an ironic note. McKay, who at times sounds disconcertingly like Judy Garland circa The Wizard of Oz, spoke to me by phone about her admiration for “Miss Day,” touching on animal rights, Whispering Jack Smith, the pit bulls who share her N.Y.C. home, and what it means to be the girl next door. Mary Lyn Maiscott: I’ve seen you three times, and every time was something different: an intimate concert of your original tunes, an outdoor concert of standards for swing dancers, and...

Sweet As Pie
By: Steve Labate
Nellie McKay’s gorgeously understated new album, Normal As Blueberry Pie, is everything a tribute record should be. McKay shows a genuine love and respect for her subject, not to mention a seemingly intuitive understanding of the long-forgotten appeal of singer/actress Doris Day—who, over the years, has become synonymous with the stodgy, overly sentimental schmaltz of the irony-free era from which she came, an era that seems to lie across the chasm of history, out of our reach. Backed by some fantastically talented jazz musicians, McKay bridges this gap, breathing life into Day’s out-of-vogue material; giving old standards a new sense of purpose that transcends nostalgia and makes them feel at home in the modern world. She tackles both popular and obscure Day-delivered numbers—written by legends like George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Johnny Mercer,...

Hometown: Miri, Sarawak, Borneo
Album: Zee Avi
For Fans Of: Nellie McKay, Ingrid Michaelson, Norah Jones

The 23-year-old has just returned to her new digs in Costa Mesa, Calif., while on break from the tour that’s had her on the road since May, though she's several thousand miles away from the many other places she once called home: Miri, the small town in Borneo where she was born; Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian metropolis where she moved as a 12-year-old; and London, where she attended university for fashion design. But she's been in good company since her arrival in the States last year.
