Some of the best movies for kids have a powerful emotional core that pulls at your heartstrings. Whether it's reconciling grief, legacy, and coming-of-age in "The Lion King" (not the "live-action" disappointment) or the tale of an outcast talking pig in "Babe" who learns that being true to yourself is all the world needs you to be, kids movies have the power to teach everyone something about life, no matter how old they are. Writer and director John Krasinski has attempted to step into this arena with "If," hitting theaters this weekend, and it's quite the departure from his sci-fi horror hit "A Quiet Place," though it fits more in line with his sophomore directorial effort, the family dramedy "The Hollars."
"If" follows 12-year old Bea (Cailey Fleming), a girl who doesn't really consider herself a kid anymore. Having dealt with some traumatic pain due to the passing of her mother,...

The first major studio family film of summer 2024 opens at the box office this weekend, and it couldn’t boast more star power.
Writer-director John Krasinski’s If — headlining Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming alongside an A-list voice cast — explores the world of discarded imaginary friends and what happens when a young girl and her neighbor try to reunite them with their previous human pals.
The live-action/CGI animated Paramount pic is tracking for a domestic debut in the $40 million range. Reviews so far are mixed, but good audience scores will arguably matter more in this case. Plus, there’s a pent-up demand for family product that all ages can go see.
Unless there is a total upset, If should top the box office and wrest the crown from Disney and 20th Century Studio’s male-fueled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which overperformed in North America with a $58.6 million opening last weekend,...

The human imagination is a boundless frontier where grand exploration can occur, and in children, this exploration is particularly vibrant. It is this fearless imagination that allows children to envision themselves as anyone or anything. This manifestation is at the heart of John Krasinski’s film If, which delves into the wonders of childhood and the enduring power of imagination. Despite boasting a formidable cast including Krasinski, Ryan Reynolds, Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell and the late Louis Gossett Jr., the film fails to fully capitalize on its potential. While charming in parts, it ultimately succumbs to a melodramatic and somewhat tedious narrative.
If follows the story of Bea (Fleming) a 12-year-old girl who spends time with her grandmother (Shaw) while her single father (Krasinski) prepares for a heart surgery. Bea, who tragically lost her mother to illness, insists that she is no longer a child, despite...

When John Krasinski stepped behind the camera for his 2018 smash hit horror feature “A Quiet Place,” he drew inspiration from an unlikely place: “This movie was for my kids,” he told IndieWire in April 2018. Well, not so much for them, but about them, and the lengths parents will go in order to protect their nearest and dearest. Krasinski and co-star and wife Emily Blunt’s kiddos were quite young at the time, and not at all the target audience for the nearly wordless alien invasion thriller. Perhaps then, when Krasinski set about writing his first post-“A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place Part II” film, the PG outing “If,” the filmmaker wanted to finally make something his kids could actually watch.
That’s a fine enough place to start, and a more tender reading of Krasinski’s fifth directorial feature, which takes an interesting enough idea — what if imaginary friends were real?...

In the early scenes of his new fantasy film geared to families, John Krasinski is seen as a 12-year-old girl’s father who’s in the hospital preparing for what seems to be life-threatening heart surgery. To keep up his daughter’s spirits, he delivers elaborate jokes and comedy routines, leading her to complain that he needn’t bother, that she’s not a child anymore. In other words, she thinks he’s trying too hard, which is something you could also say about If.
There’s no denying the ambition and thoughtfulness on display in this effort written and directed by Krasinski, which marks a notable stylistic turn from his smash hit horror films A Quiet Place and its sequel. If, whose title means “Imaginary Friends,” aims for obvious laughs with its multitude of amusing computer-animated characters featuring all sorts of incarnations from teddy bears to melting marshmallows. John Krasinski proudly makes movies for and about the whole family. Maybe his vastly successful “A Quiet Place” franchise, with all its screechy monsters, is too much for youngsters to handle. But there’s still an undeniable, innocent loveliness to those movies, with warm moments that lean closely into the bonds of an adoring family that only grow stronger in the face of danger and despair.
So it’s perhaps no surprise that Krasinski’s latest sets its sights on a tale that this time is genuinely for kids, and not just their parents. There are no bloodthirsty brutes in the live action-animation hybrid “If,” a sweetly old-fashioned yet messily conjured children’s tale that sadly falls short of its thematic ambitions. Instead, it has oddly endearing creatures that represent a child’s wild imagination, overeager to show up and save the day for the people who envisioned them once upon a time,...

Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup zoomed onto TV screens 25 years ago, as Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls debuted on November 18, 1998. Created by Craig McCracken, the animated series told how one professor’s quest to concoct the “perfect little girl” went awry with the accidental addition of Chemical X, turning three kindergarten-aged girls into super-powered crimefighters. These days, the Powerpuff Girls live on only in reruns and streaming libraries — a recent live-action adaptation never made it past the pilot stage, unfortunately. But with new comic books and even a new TV show in the pipeline, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup will be back with new stories faster than you can say “Fuzzy Lumpkins.” Here’s a breakdown of the franchise so far… The original series In Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls — which aired six seasons between 1998 and 2005 — Tara Strong, E.G. Mayim Bialik has responded to Melanie Hutsell’s apology about the use of a prosthetic nose in a Saturday Night Live sketch parodying Blossom, the sitcom that made Bialik famous. In the 1994 sketch, Hutsell played Bialik’s Blossom Russo and donned a fake nose as part of her costume. Bialik reflected on the sketch in a recent essay for Variety, noting that no other Blossom character was singled out specifically for their facial features in the scene. Then a teenager, Bialik said she “felt ashamed” after seeing the sketch knowing that peers at her high school watched SNL, and she feared how Jewish Blossom fans would feel about her “undeniably Jewish” nose being the butt of a joke. Hutsell responded to Bialik’s Variety essay in a statement to Entertainment Weekly on October 20, saying she “knew it was wrong” to wear the fake nose but was told she would be...

“Saturday Night Live” alum Melanie Hutsell has expressed remorse over wearing a prosthetic nose for a 1994 sketch about the hit sitcom “Blossom,” starring Mayim Bialik in the title role.
“When we were preparing to do that sketch all those years ago, I was absolutely horrified that they wanted me to wear a prosthetic nose to play Mayim Bialik’s character, Blossom,” Hutsell said in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly. “I knew it was wrong.”
The comedian then revealed her possible firing from the late-night television series if she didn’t wear the prosthetic nose for the sketch.

The comedian then revealed her possible firing from the late-night television series if she didn’t wear the prosthetic nose for the sketch.

SNL Vet Was ‘Horrified’ by Fake Nose She Wore in Blossom Spoof That Made Mayim Bialik Feel ‘Ashamed’
Saturday Night Live alum Melanie Hutsell is opening up about her discomfort donning a prosthetic nose to play Blossom’s Mayim Bialik in a 1994 sketch, days after Bialik shared that the spoof made her feel “ashamed.”
On Oct. 18, Bialik revisited the sketch in an essay on Variety. She remembered being the only Blossom cast member singled out for her physical features, particularly her “undeniably Jewish nose.”

An unintentional oversight or a direct shot? That’s the debate over a new photo posted on the Jeopardy! social media accounts on Friday (August 18), which seemingly snubbed Mayim Bialik. The photo in question is a poster celebrating Season 39, which wrapped up at the end of July. “And that’s a wrap! What were some of your favorite moments from S39? #Jeopardy!” the caption reads. Included in the image are Jeopardy! Masters champion James Holzhauer, Tournament of Champions 2022 winner Amy Schneider and runner-up Andrew He, as well as Season 39 fan favorites such as Ben Chan and Cris Pannullo. However, also taking up significant space in the picture is Jeopardy! co-host Ken Jennings. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jeopardy! (@jeopardy) It’s not a surprise to see a host included in the celebratory image, but it is somewhat strange that Jennings’ co-host Bialik was nowhere to be found.

The CW can never hold Kitty! How’s that for a deep cut? Don’t worry, Powerpuff Girl fans. I’ve got your back. Some unfortunate news is coming out of Townsville today. The CW is no longer developing several live-action series, including The Powerpuff Girls, the Archie series Jake Chang, the Arrowverse show Justice U, and a female-led Zorro. The same fate goes for all series left over from former CW president Mark Pedowitz’s tenure.
“We’ve already given those back to the studios,” Brad Schwartz, The CW’s President of Entertainment, explained to TVLine after an Upfront presentation, adding, “so they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere.”
Shutting down development on the abovementioned projects comes as Hollywood struggles to negotiate with the WGA during the most recent writer’s strike. With no timeline for when writers will return to work, more shows could be...

Nicholas Barasch is ready for all the 1950s drama Riverdale has up its sleeve.
As the new guy on Riverdale, Barasch is taking on the mysterious role of Julian Blossom, now in human form. We got our first taste of meeting Cheryl's equally confidant and entitled brother on Riverdale Season 7 Episode 1.
And from those first hints, we're excited about the drama brewing in the Archie, Veronica, and Julian love triangle. Julian doesn't seem like someone who will give up too quickly.
We got the chance to chat with Barasch about getting the role of Julian Blossom and his time on set. It was a really fun chat, and you could feel his excitement talking about everything from Julian's potential dark side and Barasch meeting the cast.
Check out the interview below!
So let's get started talking about Julian Blossom. Can you explain your character to people unaware of this new twin?...

Riverdale is heading back to the squeaky-clean 1950s for its final season… but maybe things back then weren’t as squeaky-clean as they seemed.
Wednesday’s Season 7 premiere kicks off with “Rock Around the Clock” playing on the jukebox and Archie and the gang getting Happy Days-style intros, so we’re definitely back in the year 1955. Jughead likes that a hamburger and fries only cost 30 cents, but he doesn’t like that he’s the only one here who remembers they got zapped back in time by that meteor at the end of last season. He and his friends are juniors in high school again,...

Have you ever looked at a character and imagined how weird it would be if they had a different voice? For example, how different would it be if, in an alternate universe, Joy from Inside Out was voiced by, maybe, Idina Menzel or Tara Strong voiced Blossom instead? If you found those situations hard to imagine, absurd even, then that means that the voice actors of those characters did a great job in embedding their voices into the soul of their characters. It just goes to show how they made themselves irreplaceable and unforgettable when one thinks, even of just

At this point, I'm convinced Natasha Lyonne can do anything. The actor, writer, director, and producer is on a serious roll, starring in (and showrunning) the fantastic second season of the Netflix sci-fi series "Russian Doll" and starring in Rian Johnson's new Peacock series "Poker Face," but once upon a time she wasn't as famous and lost out on some pretty big roles. Lyonne has been acting since she was a child, with her first credited performance on "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" when she was just six years old, and that means she's been to enough auditions that she's probably lost count. Apparently, among those auditions were try-outs for the title role on the ABC comedy series "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and for Six on the NBC comedy series "Blossom," both of which would have been wildly different with Leone.

Craig McCracken, Emmy-winning creator of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, has teamed with Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe to bring new animated versions of the classic series back to the small screen. McCracken, who first began his career at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons 30 years ago, is developing animated reboots of both series at the studio.
The Powerpuff Girls reboot revisits and expands upon the world of the original series as Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup face off against a gallery of villains comprised of familiar foes and new threats. The original series debuted on Cartoon Network in 1998, earned two Emmy Awards and numerous animation honors throughout its 78-episode run. The Powerpuff Girls centers on three sugar-coated superheroes — Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup — whose mission in life alternates between going to school, fighting crime, winning at hopscotch, and saving the world before bedtime.
