When Bhavnani first wrote a horror story ‘Bearlike Man’ that was selected at Bifan (Korea), the largest genre festival in Asia, she found herself to be the first Indian woman director to be on the platform ever.
"We were practically non-existent in that space. Over the three decades I looked at, 9.9 per cent of directors were women. Horror comes with just 5.9 per cent of directors being women and Sci-fi – 2.8 per cent. I find this statistic offensive. Wench 2022 showcased 47 horror /sci-fi/fantasy films — 43 of them directed by women," she tells Ians.
Believing that India has not really explored horror in its truest potential or form, the filmmaker feels there is no better medium to highlight social change than this genre.
"And there are so many different ways to make them instead of the cliche knee-jerk horror that we all know of," she asserts.

Broadening a multi-front action initiative, Sitges is pushing women in genre.
WomanInFan, one of the major platforms at this year’s Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which runs Oct. 6-16, looks set to provide a full development program for female genre filmmaking.
On this year’s agenda is a contest to obtain financing for a short-teaser, which Sitges Foundation Manager, Mònica Garcia Massagué said will provide “a future filmmaker the opportunity to have a market tool.”
A book of essays titled “WomanInFan” and sub-titled as a “Topography of Fantastic Genre Films Directed by Women,” will be presented withambitions to give a past, present and future take on women in genre cinema.
Sitges will stage a panel with Booker-shortlisted author Mariana Enríquez, Carlota Pereda, director of Austin Fantastic Fest winner “Piggy,” film programmer and writer Heidi Honeycutt, and author-director-producer Kier-La Janisse.

Roger Ebert dismissed Stephanie Rothman’s sweaty sexploitation flick as “The kind of movie that can almost be reviewed by watching the trailer”—Tfh Guru Heidi Honeycutt is here to accept that challenge. More entertaining than Ebert would suggest, the 1973 film stars Phyllis Davis as just one of many voluptuous inmates on a remote island where escape is impossible and no guards are necessary. 28 year old Tom Selleck makes an appearance along with Marta Kristen, teenaged Judy Robinson of Lost in Space.

Austin, TX – Mondo is excited to announce the new book release of Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive, available for saleon November 16, 2021 from author Lars Nilsen, editor Kier-La Janisse, along with several genre enthusiast contributors. Nilsen, a longtime Alamo Drafthouse film programmer and now at Austin Film Society, and Janisse, genre scholar and author (House of Psychotic Women), programmer and documentary filmmaker (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), have written a definitive guide to exploitation cinema.
At the dawn of this century, a scrappy one-screen theater in Austin, Texas became ground zero for a revolution in film exhibition. That cinema, the Alamo Drafthouse, took the seemingly foolhardy step of offering free screenings of exploitation and horror movies that had quite literally been consigned to the scrap heap. Atomica was originally titled Deep Burial. The film, from director Dagen Merrill (Beneath, 2007), stars: Tom Sizemore, Sarah Habel and Dominic Monaghan. This intriguing title has had a few theatrical showings already. The film is set for a few more on March 17th, 2017. And, the film involves a nuclear power plant, which has gone offline. An inspector finds the plant's workers, but they are acting strangely and possibly murderously. Atomica will also have a Video-on-demand launch this March 21st. The film's official trailer is hosted here. The trailer, for Atomica, is an interesting one. It shows the character Abby infiltrating the plant, which appears to be abandoned. But, one of the plant's managers eventually turns up and he may not be who he seems to be. From early reviews, the film covers a few themes. This week, we're stirring things up in 'The Vault!' We've got Dario Argento's controversial 1996 film 'The Stendhal Syndrome' starring his daughter Asia Argento. And our commentators for this one are Fangoria contributor Heidi Martinuzzi and horror host Jill Kill. The gals offer a pretty unique and often hilarious commentary on one of Argento's most misunderstood horror cult classics. In 'The Stendhal Syndrome,' Asia plays Detective Anna Manni, a young policewoman tracking down an elusive serial rapist/killer & who slowly starts going insane herself after becoming a victim of the brutal man's obsession. Yep, and her father directed he in this. Heidi and Jill aren't afraid to tackle the awkwardness of 'The Stendhal Syndrome,' nor do they shy away from breaking out wigs in the films' honor! Check out our latest entry into 'The Vault,' Dario Argento's 'The Stendhal Syndrome.' If you'd like to...

We just got a look at a crazy new Afm marketed teaser trailer for the Wetwork Media/Pinnovating Productions/Zeroinside Films production of the upcoming film American Girls, directed by Eric Anthony Pereira. And let's put it this way: I've never been more disturbed by a video of two chicks crawling all over each other!

Eric Anthony Pereira's The Locals is not yet available, however, that's not stopping him from moving on to his next film, American Girls . Based on true events, the film is a happy-happy-fun time story (insert sarcasm there) about the abduction, rape and murder of two high school girls and the fallout that nearly decimates a small Mid-Western town as long buried secrets surface when the police begin to put together the pieces of the crime. Kristina Page, Burgandi Phoenix, Devanny Pinn, Josh Hammond, Chris Anglin, Al Snow, Jessica Cameron, Kyle Morris, Barry Ratcliffe, Tawny Amber Young, Brandon Slagle, Heidi Martinuzzi and Carlos Ramirez star. Shooting begins in January. Here's a teaser to get you prepared for what's to come.

What began as a feature-length documentary two years ago has now evolved into a webseries about women and horror films directed by Montreal filmmaker Maude Michaud, debuting April 3rd, 2011.
When we first reported on the making of Bloody Breasts, interviews were still being conducted. Now, Michaud has changed the way we'll experience her exploration of the intersection of gender and horror films.
The first episode is titled “Women love horror?” and features interviews with directors and festival owners such as , Devi Snively, Reyna Young, Shannon Lark, Katt Shea, Kier-La Janisse, Denise Gossett, Heidi Martinuzzi and Elisabeth Fies.
A new webisode will be released each month on the official website for free starting tomorrow. We can't wait! Bloody Breasts is bound to be a scholarly, well-made take on a fascinating subject.

“There is no pleasure. There is no pain. There is only skin.” - Pinhead, Hellraiser III
“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi
Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men.

That's right, folks! It's Finals Week again, when we post academic articles about horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and action flicks written by our extremely educated staff. All week long you can read these slightly modified but always theory-filled papers and do your best to follow along.
I Spit on This Movie: Rape in Day of the Woman/I Spit On Your Grave by Heidi Martinuzzi
In the recent remake of the 1980 exploitation horror film “I Spit On Your Grave”, some scenes involving the protagonist, Jennifer – a young woman brutally raped by 4 men who seeks a violent and bloody revenge – were written out because the director felt that it was unrealistic that Jennifer would actively seduce each rapist before killing him. Not only did the director feel that taking out this almost insulting aspect of the original movie made his new version more realistic, he felt that it also eliminated the ‘exploitation’ factor from the movie.

Space Girls is the newest sci-fi space opera comedy from filmmaker/writer Stacie Ponder (Ghostella's Haunted Tomb) and this time, its even funnier. And Space-y-er. Because it is set in space. The female-character driven series will air on late-night/early-morning TV on the Logo Channel show Bridget McManus's That Time of the Month, hosted by comedien Bridget McManus.

Space Girls features dolls voiced by Amanda Diebert, Paula Haifley, Heidi Martinuzzi and Ponder herself. And Giant Space Cats that attack with eye lasers. The characters are named things like 'Tuffie Firefist'. That's pretty awesome.
You can check out the first episode Wednesday at 4 Am Standard time, May 5th 2010. Or, if you miss it, check it out Now online right here.

That's pretty awesome. Pretty/Scary editor Heidi Martinuzzi (me) gets mentioned in this ChicagoNow list of the top 13 influential women in horror history along with contemporaries Jovanka Vuckovic (journalist), Denise Gossett (film festival director), Devi Snively (filmmaker), and Debbie Rochon (actress) and icons Kathryn Bigelow (director), Debra Hill (producer), Anne Rice, Ida Lupino (actress/director), Karen Walton (screenwriter), Maila Nurmi (Vampyra), Stephenie Meyer, and Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein.)
I'd have loved to see Cassandra Peterson, Brinke Stevens, or Mary Lambert up there instead of myself and Stephenie Meyer. But let's just pretend we didn't say that!

Horror blogger, (and quite good filmmaker, we were pleased to find out!) Aleata Illusion, who recently called for Heidi Martinuzzi, editor of Pretty/Scary, to be 'punched in the face' because she didn't support one of the horror blog nominees for the Rondo Awards, has officially announced that there is a 'Heidi' Situation, and we want the world to know. It's been evident from the start that the horror genre has never been an exclusive boys' club. For one, the female audience for horror films is just as large and just as passionate as the male audience, and the contribution from women behind-the-scenes and especially in front of the camera (notice there are no Scream Kings -- only Queens) is invaluable to the evergreen strength of the genre.
Texas Bloodbath Film Fest allied itself with Pretty-Scary, a blog devoted entirely to women in horror, to celebrate independent filmmakers with the first annual Pretty Scary Bloodbath Film Fest. Festival organizer Andrew Rose and Pretty-Scary founder Heidi Martinuzzi, along with sponsor Damnation Books, scheduled the all-day event in Addison, Texas with a strong showing of low-budget, international horror features and shorts, all from the imaginations of up-and-coming female directors.

Here at Dread Central we love our staff. We especially love our female staff who more than hold their own in our little sausage-fest. Actually I think we have the largest number of women working with us of any genre site. Morgan Elektra, Elaine Lamkin, Melissa Bostaph, Debi Moore, Heather Buckley, Crix Lee, Heather Wixson. That's a lot of estrogen, man! Bless their hearts for putting up with our shit!
Over at Fatally Yours they're celebrating Women in Horror month by interviewing some of the wondrous chicas working in the biz today like Heidi Martinuzzi, Staci Layne Wilson, plus more including Three of our very own -- Debi Moore, Heather Wixson, and Elaine Lamkin!
Check out their interviews below and gain some insight into what it's like getting bloody with all of us devils! Dig it!

Filmmaker Heidi Martinuzzi is no stranger when it comes to the horror genre, especially considering she created, runs and edits the Pretty-Scary website, which primarily focuses on women in horror. So it's no surprise that she's taking her journalistic skills one step further with an intriguing new documentary project tentatively titled Brides of Horror . Directing the doc, as well as producing it alongside cinematographer Jessica Gallant, Brides of Horror focuses not just on horror filmmakers, but specifically on their wives, fiances and long term girlfriends. The feature explores what the daily lives of women who's spouses' day-jobs are making scary movies is really like. "It mainly focuses on the women, but the men are in it too," she says. "We go into...

Tales from the Crypt
Joan Collins, was your career really that bad before Dynasty? Starring in horrific B-Movies like Empire of the Ants and Tales from the Crypt? One vignette in particular, And All Through the House, stars Joan Collins as a devious wife hell-bent on getting away with murder on Christmas Eve. When she hears that there is an escaped convict running around hacking people up with an ax, she makes good use of it by trying to frame the killer for her husband's death! Oh no, you mean, ironically, the real killer actually does make his way to her home, where she has to defend herself?...

Bisexual Horror: Gaze and Desire in David DeCoteau’s The Sisterhood by Heidi Martinuzzi
Traditionally, horror films have been made for a straight, white, male audience. Most film studios release their horror movies with young males, aged 14-22, in mind and tend to create storylines to accommodate their perceived tastes; gratuitous amounts of blood and sexualized female nudity. While mainstream cinema has included gay storylines and filmmakers in increasing numbers in recent years, horror movies have invariably catered to a static audience and excluded gay characters (except as villains and comic relief.) This reluctance to sell and make queer horror movies has relegated those films to low-budget releasing and production budgets through select studios like Here!...
David DeCoteau is a queer filmmaker in the low-budget b-movie industry, having directed and written nearly one hundred films involving some level of exploitation of either the male or female body. At the beginning of his directing career,...
