Washington -- In mid-July, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and his longtime producer and collaborator Nigel Godrich announced that they were pulling their songs from Spotify. They argued that the online streaming service may be good for its investors, but it was bad for artists' bottom lines. All the press attention and debate that followed have not caused a mass boycott, the company told HuffPost.
But in multiple interviews, owners and executives of indie recording labels across the country said they would support the decision of an individual artist who wanted to pull out of Spotify -- although few seemed to actively encourage it.
At least one more prominent artist told HuffPost he will pull out of Spotify. Eric Hilton, who is one half of the band Thievery Corporation and also runs Esl Music, said in an email that he will be joining Yorke.
"I've always spoken out about Spotify and today's streaming sites 100% negatively.

With a new expanded two-weekend format, a massive new main stage structure, and a big 15th anniversary to celebrate, it was obvious Ultra Music Festival would be going big for 2013.
Instead, it went massive. The just-released Phase 2 lineup reveals Ultra will host its most diverse and thorough lineup yet this March in Miami's Bayfront Park: crowd faves like Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Dirty South are back, but the lineup also includes a slew of live acts including Snoop Dogg and Sleigh Bells.
"What we've achieved with this edition's ocean of talent and stage production is we feel unprecedented," said Ultra founder, CEO and president Russell Faibisch. "As the industry we work in continues to explode, with so much talent emerging and the taste of our consumer changing in the process, diversity was key."

This Ides of March, the only thing getting assassinated is millions of festivalgoers' eardrums at the now extended Ultra Music Festival in Miami's Bayfront Park.
Organizers are doubling down on the pleasure and fun, hosting not one but two weekends of Edm. But can the music fest possibly top last year's Skrillex set, Madonna's "Molly" debacle, and throwback performances by Kraftwork and New Order?
Time to break out the glow necklaces and shutter shades, and find out. Ultra's phase one lineup has been released for 2013, announcing 13 DJs and 13 live acts in addition to the previously announced DeadMaud5 and Swedish House Mafia, who will play both weekends as part of their farewell performance.
Watch the video tease above.
There's already plenty of untz-untz buzz that acts like Major Lazer, Crystal Castles, and Hot Chip are saddling up besides the standard set of mainstay performers that includes Tiesto and David Guetta.

Washington -- Since Pandora launched its Internet radio service in 2007, it has grown from a startup facing near-bankruptcy to a leader of the digital streaming market. With more than 60 million users in the past month, the company is now estimated to be worth billions, with revenue doubling every year. "On the growth side, it's been a wonderful story," founder Tim Westergren declared at a recent conference. "Our listenership just keeps exploding, and so does our revenue."
It's quite a success for a company that sold itself as an artist-friendly, transformational force that didn't just make radio cool again, but also offered -- through royalty fees -- a potential path to prosperity for musicians who've seen physical record sales plummet. Westergren is a musician himself, and takes pride in championing indies and majors alike. Pandora uses an algorithm that essentially modernized the much beloved free-form radio formats of the 1960s and '70s.

So, it's summer, and what better season is there for lighting one up, throwing on some chill tunes and whiling away a lazy weekend? While we officially don't condone those sorts of activities, unofficially we might, but either way, if you need to re-up your stash you might track down a couple of laid back bros like Ben and Chon in Oliver Stone's "Savages." Though hopefully, you won't get caught in the crossfire. Squaring off against a Mexican cartel looking to take over their turf, their shared girlfriend O is kidnapped, raising the stakes, and needless to say the results are explosive. And, the tunes on the soundtrack are equally fiery.
M. Ward, Bob Dylan, Peter Tosh (guess which song?), Massive Attack, Cut Copy and more promise to keep things moving in this pretty solid collection of tunes, while Bruce Lash offers up a super chilled over of Talking Heads...

It's time once again for the annual lineup announcement for the Austin City Limits music festival, the increasingly popular fall gathering in Texas that last year delivered new music from Coldplay and a stirring performance by Kanye West.
Last year, festival organizers went outside the box with their preannouncement teasers and unveiled a few noteworthy players via a series of lo-fi scratch-off cards and their "Acl Lineup Lottery." The scratch-off cards proved to be such a big hit last year that the fest's organizers once again teased their lineup with the lottery, which the crafty folks at Brooklyn Vegan used to reveal that Steve Earle, Delta Spirit, Punch Brothers, Quiet Company and LP would be a part of the 130-band lineup. Sometimes the greatest and most profound art is created during moments of upheaval, as a reaction against a political or social climate that is seen as unjust. And that explosive blend of vision and expression will be on full display at the Tribeca Film Festival in the documentary "Let Fury Have the Hour."
The feature directorial debut from acclaimed author, visual artist, and filmmaker Antonino D’Ambrosio chronicles how a generation of artists, thinkers and activists used their creativity -- and their creations -- as a response to the reactionary politics that came to define 1980s culture. The mixed-media collage incorporates graphic art, music, animation and spoken word and spans three decades of change -- from the cynical heyday of Reagan and Thatcher through today -- and brings together over 50 writers, playwrights, painters, poets, skateboarders, dancers, musicians and rights advocates, all of whom attest to the fact that we can...

Defining love musically has never been easy, but the team behind the soundtrack for "Crazy, Stupid, Love." offer their attempt: electronic music and neo-folk singer-songwriters.
Aside from the occasional forays into classic R&B (Doris Troy's "Just One Look") and modern funk (The Bamboos' "On the Sly"), downtempo groups and acoustic male singers dominate the album. Thievery Corporation, seemingly included on one out of every two indie film soundtracks these days, makes two appearances with "The Numbers Game" off 2008's "Radio Retaliation" (featuring go-go pioneer Chuck Brown) and "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" off 2005's "The Cosmic Game.

The Crazy, Stupid, Love soundtrack. Although few would argue with the assertion that love can indeed be characterised as both ‘crazy’ and ‘stupid’ (er, assuming we’re talking about the libidinous variety, rather than the love one might feel for a treasured family pet – say, a cute li’l wabbit. Aw), the soundtrack to the forthcoming movie with a title constituted of those three words is not so much daft lunatic, instead being more of a safe ‘n’ steady affair.
Directed by the I Love You Phillip Morris pairing of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Crazy, Stupid, Love on first inspection appears to be an odd couple bromance, with Steve Carrell as the middle-aged sad sack being giving pick-up tips by Ryan Gosling’s smooth-talking slickster. However the trailer indicates that the dramatic element of the story is at least as prevalent as the humorous one, and the soundtrack provides a further hint of this,...

When Eric Hilton and Rob Garza came together to form Thievery Corporation in 1995, the two Washington D.C.-based musicians and DJs were breaking new ground. Taking inspiration from British trip-hop artists like Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead, Thievery Corporation successfully combined downtempo electronica grooves with reggae and R&B sounds to create songs that were both musically challenging and great to dance to. In addition, more than any other band since U2, Hilton and Garza have always written lyrics that reflected the duo’s radical politics while still maintaining a groove that makes their missives palatable....

One quick note: Massive Attack is kicking off its North American tour with Thievery Corporation this weekend. Aloha... A Conversation with Massive Attack's Robert Del Naja Mike Ragogna: Usually your projects are almost like a song cycle. What was the approach while making your new album Heligoland? Robert Del Naja: This album started off, as usual, being somewhat of a sonic exercise, and then I realized halfway through that there were quite a lot of fights to be had between myself and Grant (Marshall) and myself and Neil Davidge in terms of what I wanted to do sonically and what they probably didn't want to do sonically. So, I kind of made a U-turn halfway through, and decided to strip it all back and make it very acoustic, and very much expose all the instruments, and even make the music slave to the...

"The Virgin Mobile FreeFest" is back for a second year of offering a top music festival for free. Once again taking place at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, the FreeFest line-up this year includes M.I.A., LCD Soundsystem, Ludacris, and more.
"The Virgin Mobile FreeFest" returns to the Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday, September 25th. It's the second time the festival is offered for free to concertgoers. While last year the reasoning was the volatile economy, this time the show has more charitable ideas in mind.
While thousands of tickets will still be given away for free, there will be 5 pavilion seating with proceeds benefiting youth homelessness. Donations are also encouraged to help end youth homelessness, including a donation for a "2010 Virgin Mobile FreeFest" mix. Produced by Rusko, the 20-minute mix will be available for download and will mash-up bands featured in the line-up.

Manchester, Tennessee — There was mud, rain, oppressive heat, a set by a world-beating rap superstar (Jay-z), a classic soul icon (Stevie Wonder), a former "Tonight Show" host (Conan O'Brien) and a jam-band legend (Dave Matthews Band). In other words, just another action-packed weekend at the ninth-annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.
From Thursday through Sunday, more than 75,000 fans tried to escape triple-digit temperatures by tuning in to ferocious sets from Jay, a midnight mindfunk from the Flaming Lips, anthemic rock from kind-of hometown boys Kings of Leon and just about every flavor in between.
Thursday night eased travelers in with a main stage set from British trio the xx, whose trippy lighting and haunting, minimalist tunes soothed some nerves of attendees who might have sat in eight to 10 hours of traffic to...

Well, it took all day, but finally, on Tuesday night (February 9), organizers revealed the full lineup for the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, scheduled for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee.
Jay-z, Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder, Weezer and Flaming Lips top the bill for this year's 'Roo, a list of more than 90 acts spanning genres and eras.
There are genuine legends (Jimmy Cliff, John Fogerty), established rock acts (the Dead Weather), hip-hop talent (Wale, Nas, Kid Cudi), electro heavyweights (LCD Soundsystem, Thievery Corporation) and bands that hearken back to the festival's earlier, decidedly jammy routes (Medeski, Martin and Wood, the Disco Biscuits), not to mention the annual WTFs (Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Darryl Hall with Chromeo). All in all, it's a rather jam-packed four days of music.

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

The win came over a crowed field of competitors from all over the world, many of them with much larger budgets. The other big winner at the Pump Room of the Ambassador East awards ceremony Saturday evening was by veteran master Marco Bellocchio of Italy, who won the Silver Hugo as best director for "Vincere," the story of Mussolini's younger brother. Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Filippo Timi won Silver Hugos as best actress and actor,...

The Dell Sound & the Jury competition that began months earlier with hundreds of bands competing online came to a head a couple days ago when The Bright Light Social Hour was chosen as top band. Their reward: To be one of the bands to kick off Acl Fest. Their Dell Stage performance didn't disappoint. They are a blast to watch, and I can't get their songs out of my head.
I missed most of the other early bands as we were busy at the Paste Media Tent doing video interviews with artists for a later website A/V feature. I lost count on how many bands came by to talk with us but they included Raphael Saadiq, The Low Anthem, Mishka, Todd Snider, The Parlor Mob, Daniel Johnston, The Wood Brothers, Thievery Corporation, Jesse Woods and Reckless Kelly.

Lineup Highlights: Jane’s Addiction, Andrew Bird, Ben Folds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Depeche Mode, Kaiser Chiefs, Tool, Thievery Corporation, Passion Pit, Kings of Leon, TV on the Radio, Band of Horses
Lollapalooza has seen a lot of changes in the past 18 years: Since it was founded in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction singer Perry Farrell as a farewell tour (yeah, right) for his band, the mega fest has taken a six-year hiatus, chosen a permanent location and found itself a new set of organizers. Though the event has seen its fair share of ups and downs, it has remained a staple on the annual-music-festival circuit. This year, more than 120 acts—including old-school Lolla alumns Tool and a reunited Jane’s Addiction—will fill Grant Park for the three-day extravaganza, just off the lake, with Chicago’s epic skyline as a backdrop. "The sun people," Brooklyn-based DJ Nickodemus told me, "are in some way all of us." Wishing to create an album that expresses the general attitude of the American population after the swearing in of Barack Obama, he realized that "not that much has changed--yet." Realist more than optimist, however, Nicko was born and bred and New York, displaying the positive swagger native to his birthright. He didn't need to go into a multicultural, Edenic spiel. Anyone who has gotten down at his Turntables on the Hudson parties over the last eleven years knows that optimism trumps negativity on the dancefloor, and that is the world in which he moves (and which he moves). This general attitude pervades his second full-length recording, Sun People, put out on his homegrown Wonderwheel Recordings, with a distribution deal via Thievery Corporation's label Esl Music. The...

This weekend marks the tenth anniversary of Coachella, a festival at the Empire Polo Fields in the desert of Indio, California. Coachella has a reputation for being the most laid back and palatable of all the summer music festivals (unlike, say, Chicago’s Lollapalooza, which made inauguration night in Grant Park seem tame by comparison). Why would anyone want to stand in the desert for three days straight with thousands of drunk, sunburnt people? Well, where else could you see legends like Paul McCartney, Morrissey, and Leonard Cohen (at sunset!) alongside indie darlings like TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Band of Horses? Not to mention the hip hop acts, like M.I.A., Atmosphere, Lupe Fiasco, K'naan, and Public Enemy. Coachella also has a nifty roster of D.J.’s, with Thievery Corporation, N.A.S.A., and Girl Talk sure to be the biggest draws this year.
