Husslup, the talent discovery platform founded by industry executive and producer exec H Schuster, has established a number of initiatives designed to help writers and freelance creatives during the writers and actors strikes.
These include script development workshops, a trans creatives working group and a new AI hiring tool.
The Hussulp Script Development Workshops will help diverse writers develop spec scripts. Launching in September, it will see actors read the scripts to a small audience of members who will provide feedback. The first two scripts that will be read are Quick, Quick, Slow, a queer, two-step romantic comedy in the vein of Footloose-meets-Priscilla Queen of the Desert, by Jett Garrison and The Big Coconut, a feature by Mexican-American writer Randy Gordon-Gatica.
The readings will be executive produced by Samantha Sprecher, who spent 20 years at Billy Crystal’s production company and produced Jennifer Esposito’s debut feature Fresh Kills,...

Ready, Set, Fund is a column about crowdfunding and related fundraising endeavors for Austin and Texas independent film projects.
This month is full of worthy film projects that are fundraising for all stages of production, with last month's Ready, Set, Fund spotlight project and documentary Merch Girl exceeding its goal of $30K before it ends on Thursday. A couple other upcoming film productions also portray Austin's diverse musical culture, including Thank You A Lot, which was featured in a recent Slackerwood photo essay. This film, which is funding through Wednesday, August 29, features local and legendary artists including James "Slim" Hand in the tale of a two-bit music agent whose job depends on being able to sign his reclusive, legendary father.
Another film project that embraces music is Dance Like No One's Watching from former Austin filmmaker Jenn Garrison (Prize Whores, Greg). While writing a feature script (Quick Quick Slow) that's...

Take a look at this picture, it's a prime example of what makes aGLIFF and in fact every film festival in town work. Pictured above (clockwise from upper left) are David Sweeney, Jenn Garrison, Jean Lauer, Andy Campbell, Michelle Faires and lastly actor Alex Di Dio from closing-night film BearCity. Together they represent the aGLIFF board, 2010 juries, volunteers, filmmakers, and the local film community on all levels. If it looks like they're having fun, they are. It's been a long festival, but a very successful one with many sold-out or close to capacity screenings.

The 16th annual San Antonio Film Festival, which runs June 23-27, is truly a great combination of celebrating local talent and international cinema, screening films produced in Texas to ones produced in Europe, South America and the Middle East.
There’s also a distinct flavor of socially aware fictional narratives and documentaries, including films about Tibetan refugees, migrant workers, the 2008 Presidential election, alcoholism and genocide. But, that’s not to say the fest is a totally serious affair as there’s also several genre films about the World Cup, sheep rustlers, dancers, crooks and other ne’er-do-wells. It looks like a fun mix.
The full lineup of films is below. The way the festival runs is that films screen in blocks in three different theaters. A “block” of films will generally contain a feature or two (feature = film that is 50 mins. or more), plus several shorts. In the lineup I have up,...
