She wore pants and flats as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show when other 1960s TV housewives were in dresses and heels. In the ’70s, she starred as happily single Mary Richards, whose Mary Tyler Moore Show family consisted of her friends and her TV station coworkers. In both decades, Mary Tyler Moore, who died in 2017 at age 80, was a funny, winning blend of poise and vulnerability that viewers—especially women—connected to. One of those women, groundbreaking TV producer Lena Waithe (The Chi) spearheaded the new documentary Being Mary Tyler Moore (streaming this May on HBO Max) with help from Moore’s husband, Dr. Robert Levine. It chronicles the star’s highs but also her lows, including her struggle with alcohol and her son’s untimely death. “Mary’s known as the woman with the eternal smile,” says director James Adolphus, “but if you truly want to get to know your heroes,...

James Adolphus’ new HBO documentary Being Mary Tyler Moore begins with an awkward 1966 interview of Moore by producer and talk show host David Susskind.
As Susskind rambles about how Laura Petrie, Moore’s character from The Dick Van Dyke Show, was a “strained idealization” of the American housewife, Moore sits with a big, clearly forced smile, before she finally breaks and launches into a celebration of Betty Friedan and The Feminine Mystique.
I’m rather sick of “Being” in the title for both documentaries and scripted stories — as if claiming to capture the essence of a person is shorthand for profundity — but Being Mary Tyler Moore is definitely invested in this sort of clash between superficial appearances and actual “being” when it comes to one of the most beloved and decorated women in TV history.
The documentary doesn’t always provide definitive answers on who Mary Tyler Moore was, but...

Seven years ago, pioneering film and TV producer Debra Martin Chase was thinking about leaving Hollywood.
The first Black woman to ink an overall deal at any studio, she’d produced such genre-defining hits as “The Princess Diaries,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” While getting projects about women and people of color off the ground was never easy, suddenly prospects were stagnant.
“It was at a point where Hollywood just wasn’t interested,” she tells Variety, reflecting on the career crossroads from the living room of her apartment in New York, where she lives while her popular CBS series “The Equalizer” is in production. “You’d talk to people — particularly white men — and their eyes would just glaze over.”
As Martin Chase approached 30 years in the business, her passion was slipping away. She thought, “Maybe this is the universe’s way of telling me:...

March is a big month for Lena Waithe and her Hillman Grad production banner. Yet, Waithe’s four films, all debuting within weeks of one another — “A Thousand and One,” “Kokomo City,” “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” and “Chang Can Dunk” — have virtually nothing in common. They range from a Sundance drama to an experimental documentary to a biographical HBO doc to a Disney+ teen movie, wavering widely in genre, tone, studio, and subject matter.
Well, almost nothing in common. All four films are the feature debuts of their directors. Incubating talent and giving them a shot has become an ethos for Waithe and Hillman Grad, something that has allowed the company and Waithe’s brand to blossom since launching in 2015.
Waithe’s producing success dates back to 2014, when her first project as a producer on 2014’s “Dear White People” also happened to be the debut film of Justin Simien and...

“Mary’s an easy person to fall in love with,” says the filmmaker James Adolphus, who has spent the past three years making a documentary about Hollywood icon Mary Tyler Moore.
In Being Mary Tyler Moore, which HBO will release in May after a March 13 premiere at SXSW, Adolphus documents Moore’s career, interweaving professional highlights like the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show, with inclusions from an extensive personal archive. The goal is to show Moore’s impact entertainment and on generations of women. One of those women is the documentary’s producer, Lena Waithe.
After Moore passed in 2017, Adolphus says, her husband Robert Levine was tasked with keeping the star’s legacy but was unsure how to go about it. There were offers from other filmmakers to tell Moore’s life story but he was unconvinced until reading a Vanity Fair 2018 cover story...

Christine McVie once dated The Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson, and she has since described her ex-boyfriend as “a bit barking mad.” Here’s what the Fleetwood Mac star said about her relationship with Wilson.

Christine McVie was famously married to her Fleetwood Mac bandmate, John McVie. The two musicians were going through a divorce when the band created their most successful album, Rumours.
After divorcing John McVie, Christine went on to marry Eduardo Quintela in 1986. They were together for 17 years until divorcing in 2003.
But between her two marriages, McVie dated The Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson. They were a couple from 1979 to 1982, and McVie wrote the Fleetwood Mac song “Only Over You” for Wilson.

Lymphoma was one thing. When Jeff Bridges, 72, learned the cancer diagnosis, he had shot almost four and a half episodes out of a planned ten of “The Old Man” (FX). It was the “Crazy Heart” Oscar-winner’s first starring role in a TV series. He had jumped on board the show from uber-producer Warren Littlefield right off the pilot. And then the pandemic hit.
“The world fell apart,” said showrunner Jonathan Steinberg on Zoom, tracing the rollercoaster course of the series leading up to the July 21 cliffhanger Episode 7 finale. “And then the writers and the world were coming back together again. But while we were making it Jeff got sick.”
Littlefield had first called showrunner Steinberg back in 2017 when he landed the rights to Thomas Perry’s new thriller about an ex-Afghanistan CIA operative who is unearthed...

A compelling but uneven game of cat and mouse unfolds in “The Old Man,” Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine’s adaptation of the Thomas Perry novel of the same name. At the center are two former CIA agents, Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and Harold Harper (John Lithgow), who take turns as the hunter and quarry, as well as the “old man” of the title.
But while the FX drama deals in such dichotomies—predator and prey, hero and villain—it’s much more ambiguous about morality than its source material. “The Old Man” reminds us (and then reminds us some more) that being the hero of a story is often a matter of perspective; sometimes, it’s simply a matter of time.
When we first meet Dan, he looks well past his prime—waking up throughout the night to pee, enduring condescending bromides about aging from a new doctor.

The title of FX’s The Old Man doesn’t really tell you what kind of show it is. It could be a wacky multicamera sitcom about an ill-behaving senior citizen who gets kicked out of his retirement home and has to move in with his hipster grandson. It could be a whimsical dramedy about a retiree figuring out how to fill his days. Or it could be what it actually is: a thriller starring Jeff Bridges as a renegade former CIA operative who has to kill a lot of...

Dan Chase, the protagonist of FX’s new drama The Old Man, is on the run. He’s being chased — see what they did there? — by several agencies of the American government, at least one deadly contractor and international adversaries. He’s a clever man, but his primary antagonist is time — a past catching up to him and a future becoming more finite.
It’s a part made for Jeff Bridges, one of those actors who was born for and into Hollywood stardom and who has grown gracefully from golden boy to sage septuagenarian on movie screens nationwide. As if the star’s gravitas weren’t enough, it’s almost impossible to watch The Old Man without thinking about the show’s delays for both the Covid pandemic and Bridges’ cancer — without considering time.
As a thriller, The Old Man doesn’t always deliver.

Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow are two of our greatest living actors, so it’s exciting to see them paired up as the stars of the new FX thriller The Old Man (debuting Thursday, June 16 at 10/9c). In fact, the promise of Bridges and Lithgow sharing the screen is almost enough on its own to sell this… almost. But after seeing the first four episodes, I’m not completely sold. The Old Man hits all the beats of a standard spy thriller and delivers some bone-crunching action, but the personal stuff falls flat. It strikes a meditative tone, without giving us much to meditate on.

One last game. One last heist. One last job. Film and TV are chock full of swan songs, many of which serve to resurrect retired characters or spotlight actors beloved by retirees. “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges as an ex-CIA operative brought out of hiding, sits firmly in the latter camp and doesn’t overexert itself trying to separate from the pack. Instead, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine’s adaptation of Thomas Perry’s 2017 novel relies on familiarity to craft a serviceable drama with above-average action scenes. Bridges, who also executive produces, is front and center, dragging himself out of bed to pee every few hours yet still resourceful enough to put young whipper-snappers in their place. If his grizzled appeal isn’t enough for you — and odds are, it will be for many — the cast is stacked with talent, from a generous adversary in John Lithgow...

Whoa! If the last chapter was the lit fuse for a huge explosion this hour, Bang!
Black Sails Season 4 Episode 5 wasn't just an explosion. It was a suspenseful, tense, edge-of-your-seat, thermonuclear detonation.
The writers, actors and director threw more curveballs at the audience than Dodgers' ace lefty pitcher Clayton Kershaw throws to opposing batters.
But instead of a strikeout, "Xxxiii" was a grand slam.
The writing was poetry and the performances were epically Shakespearean. Seriously, how well played was the gamesmanship between Long John Silver and Billy Bones?
That had everyone guessing until almost the last minute what Silver would decide: backstab Flint and reject his deal with Eleanor, and side with Billy, or sell out Billy as a traitor and stay the course with Flint?
What side did you think Silver would take?
And how effective were Madi and Israel Hand in steering Silver to his fateful decision?
Yeah,...

The end is about to begin in the fourth and final season of the Starz series “Black Sails.” The prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel “Treasure Island” may be taking its last bow, but not before capturing a massive war in the West Indies between the British settlers and pirates. A new trailer for the drama debuted at New York Comic Con, which shows that the shores of New Providence have never been bloodier.
“Right now, good men are not what the moment requires,” the trailer intones. “Right now, the time calls for dark men to do dark things.” Sounds like a good time.
Blasting cannons and battling ships follow, with John Silver (Luke Arnold), Eleanor (Hannah New), and Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) preparing for war. Confirming that the series will end with a bang, Flint says, “We came here not just to expel England, but to defeat them.

Starz’s pirate drama “Black Sails” has already won the Emmy, in its first season, for supporting VFX. But the show outdid itself this season, creating a hurricane that took the effects to a new level of craftsmanship. “Black Sails,” the “Treasure Island” prequel created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine (starring Toby Stephens as Captain Flint) featured a breathtaking 18-minute, 250-shot sequence that was also enhanced by the sound editing, which grabbed a nom as well.
CG water was the biggest challenge, creating liquid that was believable yet drove the animation of the ship as an integration of elements. The VFX was mostly done by Digital Domain with assistance from Ilp (additional sails) and Crazy Horse Effects (matte painting).
“We looked at live-action footage of water in storms to study the multiple elements: the swells, the surface turbulence and white spray,” said production VFX supervisor Erik Henry. “Then...

Set to cap off its stint on the small-screen with a 10-episode run, the Starz original series enjoyed an overly successful voyage, averaging close to 3.6 million multiplatform viewers per episode across its three seasons. Statistics aside, Black Sails also pulled in multiple Emmy awards, going on to nab gongs for Outstanding Special and Visual Effects in 2014.

Even as all eyes are on the major networks, speculating about which new series will be the first to land on the chopping block (my money’s on Fox’s Doa Mulaney), Starz has brightened up the week by ordering additional seasons of two original series. Pirate drama Black Sails will return for a third season, while freshman basketball comedy Survivor’s Remorse has earned a swift second season renewal just days after its premiere.
Starz won’t premiere the 10-episode second season of Black Sails, which serves as an action-packed prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, until January of next year, but the network is clearly confident in the showrunners’ long-term vision for the series.
