With NBC relinquishing Jay Leno's late-night throne to Jimmy Fallon, the door was open for an Idol return. Naturally, that means Ray Chew and his Ray Chew Live band will not be back when season 13 launches in January. Says FremantleMedia North America president of entertainment programming Trish Kinane: "We are thrilled that Rickey Minor and his band are

Squashing recent rumors Down Under, local Network Ten has confirmed that it won’t be bringing back Australian Idol. Once as popular in Australia as the U.S. version, Australian Idol launched the careers of several of the country’s current strong-selling pop artists, such as Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Damien Leith and Jessica Mauboy. And in February, Ten's program chief Beverley McGarvey said in public statements that a reboot of Australian Idol might still be in the cards. A few of the details might’ve varied, but tonight’s installment of American Idol was, at its coal-black, mercenary heart, a less dusty reenactment of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
Oh, sure, Ryan Seacrest went with his standard, “This…is American Idol!” intro (as opposed to the more ominous “Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dyin’ time’s here“). And no, there weren’t any feral, bloodthirsty ragamuffins in the front row (just some smiling or occasional booing family members of the contestants). But there was indeed a chiseled Australian dude (sporting better highlights, a more exacting ear, and a...

Thirty-nine talented young singers stand on the precipice of superstardom. And so does one kinda crazy chick who has only one drum stick (musical, not chicken) as well as the potential to turn American Idol bandleader Ray Chew’s job into the kind of situation that might pique renewed interest in a revival of Discovery Channel’s recently departed Dirty Jobs.
Yes indeed, tonight’s final installment of Season 12 Hollywood Week put the women through their final paces, narrowed their numbers to a lean 20, and — if the “we need a girl to win this year, Please!” intro is to be...

Final 4 madness, baby! It's another multi-theme episode, with Jessica, Joshua, Hollie and Phillip singing songs from the meaningless themes of California Dreamin' and Songs You Wish You Wrote. Please note that I got the specific phrasing of the second theme from the song spoilers bandleader Ray Chew tweets each week. You don't need to explain to me that it's a faulty use of the conditional tense and that it should probably be Songs You Wish You'd Written. Or something. [Seacrest did a better job of articulating the second theme than Ray Chew's list did.] Anyway, let's not spend too much time...

Thank heavens for Ray Chew and his penchant for leaking song spoilers. Earlier today, the American Idol bandleader revealed the 10 tracks that will comprise tonight’s Top 4 performance show, built around the dual themes of California Dreamin’ (Songs by Arists from the Golden State) and The Song I Wish I Wrote (er, presumably a track each contestant really, really likes?).
Below, the set list:

When music legends agree to appear on "American Idol," the producers probably don't question the congruity of which giant appears on which theme week. So let's ignore the fact that it's British week and celebrate the fact that The E Street Band's Little Steven Van Zandt is lending his expertise to the Top 5 as they take on tunes from across the pond.
And just what are Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez singing this week? It's not clear which songs belong to which singer, but the official "American Idol" Twitter posted band leader Ray Chew's set list, giving us a glimpse of all the songs before they're sung on tonight's (May 2) episode.

"The Letter," The Box Tops
"Proud Mary," Tina Turner
"Fortunate Son," Credence Clearwater Revival
"River Deep, Mountain High," Ike and Tina Turner

The set list for tonight’s American Idol Top 5 performance show has been leaked by band leader Ray Chew — in addition to the previously announced British Music theme, the remaining finalists will also tackle a track from the 1960s — and now it’s time to speculate who will sing what.
First, here are the song spoilers, which include a lot of familiar titles. (Oh Uncle Nigel, when will you hire a year-round staff to start pre-clearing a fresher and deeper song library?)

In previous weeks, the American Idol finalists performed songs from the '80s or by artists they had never heard of (Billy Joel week, for instance). Tonight, the top seven get to tackle more contemporary artists. So what will the top seven sing on Wednesday? Earlier in the day, American Idol musical director Ray Chew tweeted a teaser list of songs that included selections by Pink, Kellie Pickler, Kelly Clarkson and Lady Gaga. It is interesting to note the absence of songs by David Cook or Daughtry, two artists often tackled by Colton Dixon. Additionally, who will be brave enough to cover

The Top 8 finalists on "American Idol" are getting their '80s on, and now we know what songs the group of kids -- all but one of them weren't even alive in the '80s -- are singing. There's some "Time After Time," some "Islands In the Stream," some "Flashdance" -- but nary an "Against All Odds" in sight (though Phil Collins is repped with some Genesis to start off the show).
They were mentored by No Doubt's Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal.
Check out the playlist, including a list of four '80s-a-riffic duets, as tweeted by the official "Idol" twitter account (which posted a pic of musical director Ray Chew's set list for the night):
"That's All," Genesis
"Time After Time," Cyndi Lauper
"Wind Beneath My Wings," Bette Midler
"Flashdance ... What a Feeling," Irene Cara

Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low, because tonight the tenth insane season of "American Idol" is coming to a close.
It’s a cycle that brought us singing cleaning ladies, a scatting jazz freak, a galloping Nashville indie heartthrob, a growling sex kitten piñata, a pyromaniac rocker, a gospel lovin' spa concierge straight out of Compton, and, ultimately, two country fetus finalists who were born after Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" hit stores. With Simon Cowell on to bigger (and better?) projects, all eyes were on two new judges, more concerned with promoting their new singles than giving honest critiques.
Welcome to "American Idol X: Everybody’s Ridiculous (And Beautiful And Perfect!)"
The two hour seven minute finale spectacular kicks off at 8pm Edt, and I’ll be live-blogging every hot mess moment of it! The random cameos! The jaw-dropping group numbers! Randy Jackson’s sure-to-be-absurd outfit!

Regardless of your contestant allegiance heading into the American Idol Top 3 results-show telecast, there were reasons to celebrate by the time the credits stopped rolling and the season finale of [cue imitation of Fox voiceover guy] Bohhhhhhhnzzzz [end imitation of Fox voiceover guy] began.
Fans of country music, the vitality of youth, plaid shirts, denim jackets, sparkly cowboy boots, the Make a Wish for Nigel Lythgoe Foundation, and the act of locking them doors and turning the lights down low had to be psyched to learn that the Season 10 finale will be a battle between 17-year-old Scotty McCreery and 16-year-old Lauren Alaina, the youngest teen-vs.-teen finale in the history of the franchise.

As we lumber into the home stretch for the tenth season of American Idol, it’s hard not to start feeling nostalgic about past seasons of the show in comparison to this one. That feeling is especially acute (and just plain cute, really) when old Idol alums like Anthony Fedorov — who came in fourth place back in season 4, so long ago that it predates the very blog you’re currently reading (we are all so old, aren’t we!) — randomly pop by the old campus for a visit, only to discover they’ve erected a state-of-the-art Cross-Promotional Studies Center/UFO...

The top of tonight’s American Idol telecast was slightly altered from the way the show usually opens: The three judges were already sitting when Ryan introduced them, whereas Idol’s announcer usually gives the trio a proper introduction as they walk out from behind the big screen on the stage. Did you notice that change at all? Maybe it mattered none to you all out there who were watching on TV, but as someone who was in the Idoldome, I will tell you for sure that you missed a glimpse of something very important because of the seemingly harmless alteration: J.

Of the many, many, many differences between Season 10 and Season 9 of American Idol, one of the most striking to me is how suddenly we’re all deeply interested in the dating lives of the contestants this year. As I made my way to my seat in the Idoldome last night, I overheard one woman say with great concern and earnestness, “I just don’t know how he met Nikki Reed.” And the two women with pleasant perfume seated next to me — one a big Haley fan, the other a big Casey fan, with the clear impression that there was a...
