Stars: Michael Klug, Christine Nguyen, Joe Altieri, Meghan Deanna Smith, Debra Lamb, Helene Udy, Mike Ferguson | Written and Directed by Monte Light
Blood Covered Chocolate is the latest film from writer/director Monte Light, this black-and-white feature opens with a traditionally ordinary image of someone walking down a corridor. As he opens a storage locker, the discovery of a bag of money raises questions as to what’s happening. The man is recovering drug-addict Massimo (Michael Klug), who is celebrating his sobriety with his recovering alcoholic girlfriend, Tien (Christine Nguyen).
Matters become troubled when the recovering drug-addict is manipulated by his crime-boss stepfather, Crate (Joe Altieri), to break up with Tien. While feeling low from how he feels unable to control his life, Massimo finds his circumstances worsened when he’s turned by shapeshifting vampire, Sofia (Meghan Deanna Smith).

In choosing a title like this, a film lays its cards on the table. You’ve probably already decided whether or not you want to see it, before reading this review. Learning that it deals with vampires is only likely to solidify that decision. If you do watch, though, you may be in for a bit of a surprise. This is low budget, rough stuff, but there’s a visual style to it which is quite arresting. Writer/director Monte Light clearly has ideas, and despite the sometime incoherence of the story, there is evidence of talent.
Massimo (Michael Klug) is a drug addict celebrating two years of sobriety with his girlfriend, Tien (Christine Nguyen), an alcoholic. After a spot of slow motion, soft focus black and white sex, they lie around in bed discussing vampire mythology, and she introduces him to the concept of the aswang. Like a lot.

An homage to F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu, Monte Light’s Blood Covered Chocolate follows a recovering drug addict dealing with a new craving for crimson after being bitten by a monster with a deadly appetite. Ahead of the film's April 7th digital release from Terror Films, we have the trailer to share with Daily Dead readers!
Here's what Monte Light had to say about the making of Blood Covered Chocolate:
“Shot in black-and-white by award-winning cinematographer Neal Tyler, Blood Covered Chocolate acts as an homage to the one-hundred-year-old F.W. Murnau classic Nosferatu. While indebted to the history of cinema, it is also a timely commentary on the demons and addictions inherent in modern life. As an exploration of my own struggles with substance abuse, this is the most personal movie I've ever made.”

Animator, director, producer and story artist Burny Mattinson, who joined the Walt Disney Company at the end of its first great run of films, when Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942) were new and an in-his-prime Walt Disney was just 42 years old, died today. He was 87. He was the last full-time Walt Disney Studios employee who had worked at the company when Walt Disney still ran it.
Seeing the studio’s Pinocchio at the age of six convinced Mattinson he wanted to work in animation. “Ever since I saw that film, this was my dream—to work in this business,” he recalled years later. “So I worked every day, drawing.”

Burny Mattinson, a Disney Legend who served as an animator, producer, director and story artist in his nearly 70-year career with the studio, died Monday at the age of 87 following a short illness. Disney announced his death on their official website.
The story goes that Mattinson, who was born in San Francisco in 1935, was transformed when his mother took him to see Walt Disney’s “Pinocchio” at the age of 6. He knew what he wanted to do. As Don Hahn, who produced some of Disney’s most beloved movies during the Disney Renaissance, said of Mattinson’s life: “His life could be a Disney movie: teenaged kid shows up at the Disney gate with his portfolio under his arm and stays for 70 years. He was our story sensei, a brilliant draftsman who showed us what it was like to grind on a story until it was right.”

Three of Disney’s most popular animated franchises are getting new installments. Sequels in the “Frozen” and “Zootopia” series are both in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios, while a fifth film in the “Toy Story” series is in the works at Pixar.
News of these sequels was revealed by Walt Disney Corporation CEO Bob Iger during the company’s Q1 2023 earnings call on Wednesday.
“Today I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Frozen’ and ‘Zootopia,'” Iger said during the call. “We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”
The announcement of these three sequels followed some brutal news from Iger, who shared that 7,000 employees would be laid off at the company.

Another slice of Surrender Cinema, the cheesy and sleazy sister company of Full Moon, who are notorious for delivering films packed with T&a, and Haunted Hotties does not disappoint. However, the film also delivers on the story (for a change).
Haunted Hotties sees a Professor’s search for the perfect test subject for his invisibility serum lead him to an exotic night club with a macabre twist… all the dancers are blood-sucking creatures of the night! Oh, and another of his serums, one that does for women what viagra does for men, also turns the test subjects into zombie-like rampaging killers!
So we’ve got a mad scientist, vampires and “zombies” plus plenty of nudity in a film that feels like a modern-day Carry On movie.

Lin-Manuel Miranda has revealed the direct message he received from director Taika Waititi following the release of Disney’s Encanto last year.
The Hamilton composer wrote the songs for the hit animated musical, including the chart hit “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”.
In an interview with Variety, Miranda looked back on the immediate reaction to the success of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”.
“Honestly, before it ever left my house, it was my father-in-law, Frank,” said Miranda. “He was like, ‘Lin, I know I’m not supposed to listen when you’re writing. But I’ve been singing ‘We don’t talk about Bruno’ in my head for three f***ing days!’
“And that was before I think I even sent it to [the film’s] creative [team] – he just heard me caterwauling in my office.”

Thanks to Josh Gad, we can always build a snowman.
“Frozen” star Gad saved lovable character Olaf from being cut out of the Disney film, according to co-director Jennifer Lee. Gad presented Lee the award for Distinguished Storyteller by the Los Angeles Press Club on December 4 as part of the 15th annual National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards.
“Josh is Olaf,” Lee said during the acceptance speech (via Variety). Lee noted that she came on board to helm the 2013 feature after the film was already in development. An early cut left Lee with one comment: “My first note was, ‘Kill the snowman,'” Lee said.
Yet after a “sneaky” animator sent over a three-page script treatment for Olaf with Gad in mind, Lee couldn’t resist casting Gad in the role of the adorable snowman who accompanies Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and Sven (Frank Welker) to find Anna...

Can you fathom a world without Frozen‘s Olaf? Imagine, if you will, car rides devoid of sing-a-longs about building a snowman. What would you have done? The thought chills my spine when I think about the possibilities. Who doesn’t love the off-key echo of tiny voices from a back seat warbling about seasons and winter magic on repeat? Well, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation and co-director of Frozen, Jennifer Lee, that’s who. I’m just kidding. Or am I?
Speaking with Variety, Lee confessed that she almost ordered animators to melt the happy-go-lucky snowman into the ground. She is the co-director of Frozen but came onto the project after the animated musical was already in production. The co-director of Disney’s Frozen has confessed that she wanted to cut the much-loved character of Olaf the snowman during the production process.
Jennifer Lee, who is also the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation, joined the team of the 2013 film while it was already in development.
After viewing an early cut, Lee was seemingly less than thrilled with Olaf and wanted him to be taken out of the story.
“My first note was, ‘kill the snowman’,” she noted.
However, a staff animator then created a three-page script with actor Josh Gad, who plays the voice of Olaf, in mind. Luckily, Lee was apparently impressed with Gad, and Olaf’s character was saved, according to a Variety report.
Lee accepted the distinguished storyteller award from the Los Angeles Press Club on Sunday (4 December) at the 15th annual Arts and Entertainment Journalism awards, presented to her by Gad himself.

Disney Animation has not had a good year. The studio has followed disappointing box office for last summer’s “Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear” with the big-screen bomb “Strange World” that is projected by analysts to cost the studio 100 million-plus as one of Disney’s biggest failures ever.
The flop is so big that it is on par with another historic bomb that the studio released on Thanksgiving weekend two decades ago: “Treasure Planet,” the most prominent in a string of theatrical busts that helped lead to the ouster of then-ceo Michael Eisner and paved the way for the rise of Bob Iger, who is now returning to take charge of Disney after the brief, tumultuous reign of Bob Chapek. Unlike Eisner and “Treasure Planet,” “Strange World” doesn’t entirely fall on Chapek’s shoulders. (The new film had been in development under Disney Animation head Jennifer Lee prior to Chapek’s rise as CEO.

D23 Expo, the Disney fan event held every two years, just wrapped up in Anaheim, California. For fans of the brand, it’s their chance to get a first look at new movies, television shows and theme park attractions from every corner of the vast Disney empire and to celebrate (along with other like-minded folks) the stories that mean so much to them. And for those of us who cover the company, it gives an opportunity to see what each part of it will be offering up, outlining where the company is headed in the next few years.
But after this year’s D23 Expo, which was packed with presentations about sequels and spinoffs and decidedly light on original storytelling, it looks very much like Disney’s future is mired in the past. And they’re running out of past to mine.

Walt Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee regularly returned to the centennial of the Walt Disney Company during the studio’s massive panel devoted to the features they have coming up over the next several years. Innovation was the name of the game. With three years passing since the last time audiences were ensconced in Hall D23 both Walt Disney Animation and Pixar touted a desire to change with the times. Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter said, if anything, the pandemic forced the studio to ask “what’s our purpose” and based on the footage for both studios, there’s a desire to make that purpose great storytelling and A-list actors voicing iconic characters.
Unlike 2019, which had “Frozen 2” as the centerpiece of the event, complete with a musical performance and a clip, this year touched on several different shows with little footage. The big surprise was an appearance by Amy Poehler,...

For decades, wishes have been an important part of Disney history, as seen in songs like “When You Wish Upon a Star” to “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes.” Disney’s upcoming movie, aptly titled “Wish,” is taking that concept to the next level, the company announced at the D23 Expo on Friday.
The new, animated film takes place in Rosas, the kingdom of wishes, it was announced at the D23 Expo on Friday. The movie focuses on the power of wishes, and it blends the classic watercolor-esque Disney animation style with a newer, CGI look. Ariana DeBose will play Asha, the 17-year-old heroine and protagonist of “Wish.” Jennifer Lee wrote the film, with Chris Buck, Fawn Veerashunthorn directing.
DeBose treated the D23 audience to a live performance of “More for Us,” one of the songs from “Wish.” The movie will hit theaters in November 2023, in honor of Disney’s 100th anniversary.

Disney Animation revealed Frozen favorites Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are teaming to write the feature Wish, which will tell how the wishing star that so many Disney characters have wished upon came to be. West Side Story Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will voice star in the feature, which is slated for 2023 and will be a watercolor style of animation blended with CG.
“How did the wishing start?” Lee asked at D23 Friday, referencing all the wishing that happens in Disney animated movies.
Wish centers on Asha (DeBose), a 17-year-old who sees a darkness in her kingdom that no one else does, so in a moment of desperation, she makes a passioned plea to the stars. The answer to Asha’s wish is an actual star that falls from the sky to help on her journey. DeBose was a surprise guest, as neither...

All four of the actors from Disney’s smash-hit, Oscar-winning film “Frozen” are now officially Disney Legends. And at their ceremony at D23 on Friday morning, none of them could “let it go.” Kristen Bell apologized for destroying a generation of parents’ eardrums, while Josh Gad joked about adding “Disney Legend” to his driver’s license. And Idina Menzel belted out a brief snippet of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
Jonathan Groff, who plays Kristoff in the films, took the opportunity to bring up how Disney and “Frozen” allowed him to embrace his identity.
“As a young gay boy growing up in the late-’80s/early ’90s, Disney VHS tapes were my primary source of escape and self-expression,” Groff said, adding that as a child he dressed up as everyone from Peter Pan to Mary Poppins. “My Mennonite grandparents called me ‘Mary,’ without a hint of irony.”

Is a National Animation Museum on the horizon?
On Tuesday, state senator Anthony Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) announced that he helped secure 2.5 million in the 2022-23 California state budget to kickstart an effort to develop a virtual and physical animation museum.
There’s still a long way to go before the project can become a reality. More fundraising will follow, along with outreach to studios and groups including the International Animated Film Society (Asifa-Hollywood), the non-profit that produces the Annie Awards for animation — which separately had been developing its own plans for a museum to celebrate its art form.
One initial idea is to potentially find a space in the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena area, which has long been a center for animation. Burbank has been the home of Walt Disney Animation Studios since 1940, Dreamworks Animation has called Glendale its home since its launch in...

One of those directors was Fred Olen Ray, the genius behind such films as Scalps, Star Slammer, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons, Cyclone and the awesome Scream Queen Hot Tub Party. However in the intervening years it’s safe to say I haven’t had the urge to watch as many of his flicks as I did in the 80s/90s heyday...

Screen siren Tawny Kitaen returns to our screens on the hunt for a killer in After Midnight, the latest film from renowned filmmaker Fred Olen Ray (the man behind one of my favourite horror B-movies, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers). When an exotic dancer is murdered at a seedy strip club, her sister Constance (Catherine Annette – Silent But Deadly), a TV newscaster, goes undercover to find the killer. While working at the club, she quickly realizes that everyone is a suspect and that other dancers are being targeted. She must work fast to find the killer to seek her revenge before she becomes the next target.
After Midnight debuts via VOD on October 28th from Phase 4 Films, in anticipation of it’s release we chatted to star Catherine Annette about her role and working with Fred Olen Ray and Tawny Kitaen…
What was it that attracted you to the film, Catherine?...
