Each weekend a profile on a just-opened Oscar contender. Here's abstew on this weekend's new release, a hit at Sundance that just played the New York Film Festival.
J.K. Simmons as Fletcher in Whiplash
Best Supporting Actor
Born: Jonathan Kimble Simmons was born January 9, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan
The Role: Writer/Director Damien Chazelle makes his feature film debut with his screenplay that originally came to attention when it was featured on the annual Black List in 2012. The film follows a first year drum major (Miles Teller) at the fictional Shaffer Conservatory of Music that joins the elite Jazz orchestra headed by a sadistic conductor named Terence Fletcher (Simmons). Fletcher is well respected and can make or break a young musician's career, although his methods of achieving perfection (violent outbursts, name calling, and physical abuse when he actually throws a chair at Teller) are somewhat unconventional.

Two leading Chinese movie directors are boycotting the Melbourne Film Festival in Australia in a bust-up over the screening of a documentary about exiled political activist Rebiya Kadeer.
Jia Zhangke, director of the short film Cry Me A River, and Perfect Life director Emily Tang have withdrawn their work from the event.
Festival chief Richard Moore believes the move was in response to a decision to broadcast Jeff Daniels' Ten Conditions of Love, which tells the story of political activist Kadeer, adding: "It's hard to draw any other conclusion."
Tang has also refused to take up an offer to attend the festival as a guest, and Chinese consular officials recently phoned Moore to discuss the screening of Ten Conditions of Love.
But Moore is determined to press ahead with the broadcast: "It makes me feel angry, annoyed and irritated all at the same time, that they would try to interfere with our programme for blatantly political ends."
Kadeer, 62, is the leader of the World Uyghur Congress, representing the interests of Uyghur citizens in China. Officials blame her for inciting ethnic unrest in Xinjiang, and she spent six years in a Chinese prison before she was released into exile in the Us in 2005. In 2004, she won the Rafto Prize for human rights.
