Marc Short, the former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence and a longtime Republican consultant, has been named a contributor to both NBC News’ “Meet the Press” and CNBC, according to three people familiar with the matter,
Short is expected to appear on “Meet the Press” this Sunday, according to one of these people. He has taken part in the program several times in recent years when not affiliated with an active campaign, turning up as recently as January. Short has typically appeared during the show’s panel section, providing a perspective from the right.
NBC News confirmed Short’s new role on “Meet The Press.”
Involving both an NBC News program and one of the NBCUniversal cable-news outlets in the same contributor package is somewhat unique, but there may be reason behind it. CNBC enjoyed a contributor relationship with Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former Fda commissioner and Pfizer board member,...

As WWE continues to recruit the top wrestling talent in the world to freshen up the ranks of both their main roster and Nxt, yet another star looks set to join the company, assuming he hasn’t already signed.
During the action-packed Nxt: TakeOver Dallas show, the cameras focused in on Japanese superstar Kota Ibushi seated in the crowd, a recent free agent after successful runs in Ddt and New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Ibushi resigned in February after recovering from a cervical disc herniation, stating that he felt he could no longer maintain the strenuous schedule he was working while performing for both companies simultaneously.
His departure was a difficult blow for New Japan following the losses of top stars Aj Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura, and many expected “Golden Star” to be in line for a major push.

Actor Doak Rapp stepped on a stage and launched into his monologue—a powerful, profane four minutes from Edward Albee’s “The Zoo Story”—before a rapt audience. It’s a scene that has played out countless times in auditions, acting classes, and colleges all across the country. But what made Rapp’s delivery especially interesting, in addition to the postperformance discussion led by a local theater critic, was that he was 15 years old. Such is a typical experience at the statewide Texas Thespian State Festival, which returns to Dallas’ Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dec. 3–5. “The festival has grown from meeting in high school gymnasiums to nearly outgrowing hotel and convention facilities in Texas,” according to Amy Jordan, chapter director of the Texas Thespians, a member of the International Thespian Society. The fest even attracts Hollywood and Broadway celebs, who share their experience with the ecstatic teenagers. “One of...

Today is June 19: Juneteenth, the day that the Emancipation Proclamation was finally enforced in the furthest reaches of the confederacy, some two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order freeing American slaves.
It's an important commemoration in American history, and a great excuse to eat really good barbeque. It ought to be a national holiday.
There are various theories and narratives as to why it took two and a half years - from January 1, 1963 until June 19, 1965 - after the Emancipation Proclamation for slaves to finally be freed in Texas. One story says a messenger carrying news of freedom was murdered on his way to Texas. Another story says that slaveholders deliberately withheld the news from their workforce, which would have been easy enough to do. Another says federal troops delayed bringing the news to allow plantation owners one last harvest before setting the harvestors loose.

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara may be more comfortable performing in English than she was when she required help from a dialect coach. But that accent is still a factor that producers of Saturday Night Live will have had to take into account when coming up with sketches for her hosting debut tomorrow night. This is not a lady who can credibly play, let's say, Kay Bailey Hutchison. But surely there are other ways in which her talents can be put to work, as suggested below:11:29 p.m. Cold Open: Sarah Palin (cameo by Tina Fey) extends her Today guest appearance into the fourth hour with Kathie Lee (Kristen Wiig) and Hoda (Nasim Pedrad). 11:35 p.m. Monologue: Host Sofia Vergara is interrupted by characters from her forthcoming movie, The Three Stooges: Larry (Fred Armisen), Curly (Bobby Moynihan), and Moe (Bill Hader). 11:44 p.m. On an episode...

In an appearance on MSNBC's Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd, Republican Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison took Governor Rick Perry to task for limiting access for women's health care services. She also disputed the notion that Republicans were conducting a so-called 'war on women.' I think Planned Parenthood does mammograms," Hutchinson conceded. "They do so much -- so much of the health care, the preventative health care, and if they're doing that, then we need to provide those services. Absolutely."...

Meryl Streep gave top U.S. politicians a sneak peek at her Margaret Thatcher biopic in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday night.
Just hours after she was honoured with the New York Film Critics Awards Best Actress trophy for her performance in The Iron Lady, the actress hosted a screening of the film at the Spy Museum.
Oscars experts expect Streep to pick up her third Academy Award for the portrayal of the former British Prime Minister.
Top politicians Jack Warner, Barbara Mikulski, Kay Bailey Hutchison and Charles Robb were among those in attendance.
Streep wasn't there just to boost publicity for her new film - she was also promoting the National Women's History Museum, which officials are hoping to build along the National Mall in the U.S. capital.

As the retirements of Jon Kyl and Jim Webb make plain, the era of Senator-for-Life Strom Thurmond is over. David A. Graham reports on what's pushing senators out early-and more possible retirees, from John Ensign to Ben Nelson.
When Arizona Republican Jon Kyl announced that he wouldn't run for a fourth term in the Senate, it wasn't exactly a surprise-he'd been rumored to be considering the move for months. But in the past, the very idea that a senator in his position wouldn't run would have been shocking. Kyl's the second-ranking Republican in a body the Gop has a good chance to recapture in 2012, and with a reputation as an influential and skillful politico with sharp elbows, his prospects for moving up were good.

Perhaps spooked by the just-released numbers that teen pregnancy rose in 2006, the first time in more than a decade, George W. Bush will be the featured speaker at the Life Centers Celebration of Life event on April 15 in Indianapolis. No surprise here: Life Centers chose W because of his anti-abortion stance. In other Bush-family news, George H. W. Bush announced last week that he will endorse Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison against Governor Rick Perry for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in Texas. Bush Sr. reports that Hutchison “was a Lone Star Republican before it was cool to be a Republican in Texas.” The elder Bush must be referring to a time before W took office.

New York -- It's official: The Dtv transition will soon be moved from Feb. 17 to June 12.
After a failed attempt last week, the House of Representatives passed Wednesday afternoon a bill that would delay the transition. A similar bill had passed the Senate last week, and President Barack Obama has indicated he'll sign the bill this week.
The effort capped a movement by the Obama administration, Democrats on Capitol Hill and consumer advocates to postpone shutting off analog TV until a better plan was put into place. There were concerns about whether enough work had been done among some parts of the population, along with millions of Americans on a waiting list for a reimbursement program that ran out of money.
Last week, the Senate unanimously approved a bill drafted by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-w.Va., and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, to address the issues. But House Republicans had...

New York -- Congress moved one step closer to delaying the digital TV transition until June, with Senate passage late Monday of a bill moving that date until June.
The passage by unanimous consent follows a compromise bill, with the support of Democrats and Republicans, made Friday night by Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV, D-w.Va. Rockefeller's Dtv Delay Act pushes the transition to June 12 while allowing broadcasters to switch earlier and helps alleviate the problems with the converter box coupon program.
"The shameful truth is that we are not poised to do this transition right," Rockefeller said in announcing the compromise. "We are only weeks away from doing it dreadfully wrong -- and leaving consumers with the consequences." Rockefeller was joined in the new bill by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, the ranking member of the Rockefeller's Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
The bill now goes to the House.

WASHINGTON -- A senior Democratic senator plans to force a series of votes on indecency legislation when the Senate Commerce Committee takes up a broad-based telecommunications reform bill in the spring, an aide said Monday. Sens. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, have introduced legislation that seeks to expand indecency regulations to cable and satellite TV providers, include violent content under the same regulations as indecent content and codify the current children's television rules. "Sen. Rockefeller plans to offer his bill, in totality, or section-by-section, as amendments to the telecom bill as this goes forward," James Reid, the senator's telecommunications policy aide, told a National Assn. of Broadcasters conference. Hutchison was taking a wait-and-see position. "We're just going to wait for the markup," Hutchison spokesman Chris Paulitz said.
