Though many of its characters are morally gray, The Walking Dead has always been a black and white affair…at least in terms of the paper it’s printed on. Now, that’s set to change.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Walking Dead will return this October as The Walking Dead Deluxe. Creator Robert Kirkman’s studio Skybound Entertainment will be re-releasing each of the series’ 193 issues with some added features. For the first time ever, The Walking Dead will be printed in color, with colorist Dave McCaig joining the project to add color to illustrator Charlie Adlard’s art. Additionally, each issue will include a new installment of “The Cutting Room Floor,” which features original handwritten plots by Kirkman along with commentary about arcs the comic opted not to explore.

It was earlier this year when we initially reported on how Katherine McNamara’s Mia Smoak character would get a spinoff of her own once Arrow took its final bow. And after months of vague statements given by the network itself, the official announcement finally came down in September, when it it was confirmed that Black Canaries Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) and Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy Rodgers) will star alongside McNamara.
After much speculation as to the show’s official title, it looks like that knowledge has been disclosed without much in the way of fanfare. Actually, we owe our thanks to Marc Guggenheim’s Twitter page, as it was there where the big reveal was made.
Seen below is the first piece of promo art drawn by Emanuela Lupacchino, inked by Brett Breeding, and colored by Dave McCaig, showing Mia decked out in a Green Arrow costume and standing alongside Dinah and Laurel.

Exclusive: This year marks the 20th anniversary of David Fincher’s Fight Club, the malevolent masterpiece that adapted Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel and made a generational cult hero out of two-fisted Tyler Durden, the subversive soap salesman portrayed by Brad Pitt.
Now Palahniuk is reviving Durden with the scabby and surreal Fight Club 3, a sequel written as a graphic novel for Dark Horse Entertainment, the Oregon-based publisher of Hellboy, 300, Sin City and The Mask. The high-profile project will be published first as a 12-issue “maxi-series” that begins when issue No. 1 hits stores on Jan. 30.
Deadline readers won’t need to wait that long. Today you can watch the Dark Horse-produced trailer and read a sordid seven-page excerpt from issue No.1 (at the bottom of this post) that impressively showcases the storytelling prowess of Eisner Award-winning artist Cameron Stewart.

This review is based off a volume that collects Batgirl #1-6.
For me, the past five or six years of Batgirl comics have been a mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong, I love the character of Barbara Gordon and am not naysaying any creators who’ve worked on the books by any means. It’s just that the tone of each particular run has been undoubtedly polarizing.
I think we can all agree that Gail Simone is a master of her craft, but some felt her New 52 tour of Batgirl went too dark, a product of that era. Personally, I really dug the material she put out. Gotham City is a dark, rough place and I like my comics to reflect that.
But when Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr took over, they moved Ms. Gordon to Burnside, a hipster borough, and gave the book a very “young” feel,...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Round Up Week 09-28-2016
This week begins New York Comic Con! And your faithful comic book reviewer will be attending and looking to get as many scoops, interviews and photos possible! How does DC Comics look going into this week’s releases and Comic Con line up? Let’s take a look!
Action Comics #964
Story: Dan Jurgens Art: Patrick Zircher, Tomeu Morey
Review: So this is supposed to bring things back to the “status quo” for Superman. Ummm…I guess? Essentially Pre-Flash Point Supes brings current mystery “normal” Clark Kent the fortress of solitude. There Superman begins to inspect Clark to see just how the heck this is all possible. The final conclusion seems to be that indeed this is legit Clark Kent and The Superman of New 52 was impersonating as Clark to protect him from a dangerous organization. Now of course none of this...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 08-24-2016
Recently I put up an article here on Lrm about getting into Batman for new or casual readers (and to an extent, some of the more regular comic book readers out there). I broke it down to three good jumping on points, of which Tom King’s "Batman: Rebirth #1" was used. Now with some of the "Rebirth" books getting near issue six, I can say almost (Almost, not All!) all of the official "Rebirth" books have been an excellent introduction to the series for new readers. On that front, DC has been hugely successful (and the sales numbers are showing it). While continuity is still a bit funky, and events within titles don’t really seem to match up in a macro sense, each individual series has been a blast to read. While I am still reading Marvel books,...

No DC Comics reviews for me this week as it seems Rebirth is taking a break (unless you need to go pick up those 2nd printings!-and you should!) So I will focus a little more on Marvel. Rumbles in the rumor community are suggesting Another reboot coming Marvel’s way real soon which promises to change the landscape of the Marvel Universe again! I’m guessing it will be the fallout from this terrible Civil War going on. Remember if there’s a book you want to have checked out, let me know and I will review it!

Civil War #1
Story: Brian Michael Bendis Art: David Marquez
Review: I don’t really get why this event is happening. I mean I get it in the sense of Captain America: Civil War is out in theaters and Marvel is I’m sure hoping to gain some traction from that, I get that the previous Civil War event was a big deal and its sort of “resurrection” during Secret Wars was popular, and I guess in the end Marvel just absolutely had to do another Civil War (See the term “Cash Grab”). However,...

Huck #2
Written by Mark Millar
Art by Rafael Albuquerque
Colors by Dave McCaig
Letters by Nate Piekos
Published by Image Comics
After a nefarious opening sequence set in Cold War Russia that sets up another superpowered character and a possible adversary for Huck, Huck #2 shows the onslaught of media attention after Huck rescued some kidnapped girls from Boko Haram in Nigeria. But even though this soft-spoken and intellectually disabled young man is shaken up by the horde of people surrounding his adopted mother’s house, Huck spies a sad woman and is off to do three more good deeds. Writer Mark Millar continues to show Huck’s good and helpful heart despite the circumstances, including the media and possible fallout from a Cold War era Russian scientist. 2015 has been quite the eclectic year for comics, and this fact is reflected in our top ten list. Image Comics continues to be the true house of ideas with books ranging from a feminist twist on exploitation films to a murder mystery set in 1940s Hollywood and even a Lgbtq-friendly parody of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Even though they are in the middle of big events (Convergence and Secret Wars), DC and Marvel respectively still have room for offbeat takes on their iconic or not so iconic characters and are represented on this list along with Valiant, which has attracted a veritable Murderer’s Row of creator to shape and develop their shared universe.
Here are the top ten comics of 2015 so far.

DC Comics takes another opportunity to update the origin of the Dark Knight for the New 52 with Batman Volume 4: Zero Year - Secret City. The book collects issues 21 through 24 of the monthly title and Batman Zero Year: The Director's Cut #1. If you're worried about getting a repeat of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One, you can leave your reservations at the door.
Gotham City is entering a new era shrouded in mystery. A masked vigilante dubbed the Batman has declared war against the criminals overrunning the metropolitan. A gang led by a crook calling himself the Red Hood rise up to wreak havoc and take control of the corrupt underground.
Writer Scott Snyder takes the origin of Batman in a different direction that proves to be as entertaining as Frank Miller's critically acclaimed Year One. It's hard not to make comparisons, but the two stories do have different atmospheres.

American Vampire Second Cycle #1 (Vertigo): Welcome back, American Vampire. You haven’t changed a bit. We still get Scott Snyder’s brilliant, no-holds-barred depiction of Skinner Sweet, now in Juarez holding up people at a crossroads, and the icily elegant Pearl, who has begun a project on vampire heritage and takes in fanged children like the director of a Transylvanian orphanage. But someone called the Grey Trader has entered the picture, and his presence actually puts fear on Skinner’s face, which is so wrong it’s horrifying. Rafael Albuquerque’s art continues to kill, offering stylized faces and dark, inky shadows while Dave McCaig’s colors give everything a distinctly Western vibe. There’s also a shoutout to the “Scott Snyder hates horses” joke, which caps off a scene that would be dreadful if the joke’s existence weren’t so damned amusing. 8/10

Ghost #2
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick & Christopher Sebela
Artist: Ryan Sook, Drew Johnson and Andy Owens
Colors: Dave McCaig
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3 (Digital)
So it turns out Ghost is the latest in a series of Dark Horse relaunches all tying into what is apparently going to be a coherent pulp hero universe. Coined “Project Dark Sky,” there’s no real narrative for the event other than some half-assed Arg hinting at psychic powers and alien invasions. It apparently has seven core titles, some of which I’ve only just glimpsed passing over on the rack on new comics day. That’s ambitious. But the whole gig is kind of pointless to me, because they...

Animal Man #28
Written by Jeff Lemire
Art by Rafael Albuquerque
Colors by Dave McCaig
Published by DC Comics
Poor Buddy Baker. Jeff Lemire has really put his family through the ringer. You can’t help but feel sorry for the guy. His son Cliff died in Rot Wars, his daughter has been drawn into the Red, and evil blood monsters keep attacking his wife. Every villain he faces taunts Buddy with his failure to protect his clan. Family is the major theme running through Lemire’s run of Animal Man, and while Buddy manages to save the rest of the Bakers one last time, it’s a pyrrhic victory.
This issue ends the Brother Blood arc of Animal Man, tying up the plot that dovetails so nicely with the theme of family. Having invaded the Red, the source connecting all of the animal kingdom, Brother Blood has been tearing through...

Ahhhhh I Haven’T Bought A Single Christmas Gift??!!
I hate this crass commercial holiday! Where’S My Spiked Eggnog?!
In other news, it looks like next Wednesday will be devoid of any new releases besides a few DC/Marvel titles, which explains why this week was overloaded with both new titles to review and new issues in the ongoing series I’m already evaluating in this column. As a result, what you’re getting this week is two fresh properties and the second issue of A Voice In The Dark, because I’m really interested in seeing how that comic goes, but you’re Also going to see comics from This week reviewed Next week. However, those will all be the latest issues of ‘Pretty Deadly’, ‘Bloodhound’ and ‘Umbral’, because they’re less likely to fly off the shelf as quickly, although honestly, you should probably just grab ‘Pretty...

Batman #24
Writers: Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV
Penciller: Greg Capullo and Rafael Albuquerque (backup)
Inker: Danny Miki
Colorist: Fco Plascencia and Dave McCaig (backup)
Publisher: DC Comics
In Batman #24, Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo set out to answer the question, “Who is Batman?” How did Bruce Wayne, angry urban vigilante, become the legendary Dark Knight? Snyder and Capullo answer this question through both words and action, earnest speeches and brutal brawls. Each panel on every page acts as a building block in the larger Batman mythos. Some blocks are the same. There are respectful homages to Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27 and a more recent story near the end of the comic. However, Snyder and Capullo add wrinkles into Batman’s origin told in Batman Year One and elsewhere, which make their story stand out. These insights into the character of Batman (who is often overshadowed by...

There was tremendous excitement over Lost’s Damon Lindelof making his Marvel debut with the Ultimate Wolverine vs. Ultimate Hulk miniseries. The writer, at the height of his popularity, was paired with Leinil Francis Yu so anticipation was running rampant. The first issue arrived and there, the behemoth literally tore the Canadian mutant in half – something we’d never seen before. The second issue ratcheted things up and then….nothing. At least not for threel years and by the time we got the final issues in 2009, few cared. The momentum and excitement was long gone and could not be recaptured.
Marvel Knights’ Motion Comics saw the potential here, and adapted the story into a multi-part serial totaling about 1:10 and for a change, did a good job casting well-matched vocal performers for the two lead roles.
The entire story is now collected on Shout! Factory’s release, Ultimate Wolverine vs.

Batman #22
Writer: Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV (backup)
Pencillers: Greg Capullo, Rafael Albuquerque (backup)
Inker: Danny Miki
Colorists: Fco Plascencia, Dave McCaig (backup)
Though Batman #22 may lack the big action set pieces and reveals of last month’s issues, it has a good deal of visual experimentation from Greg Capullo, Danny Miki, and Fco Plascencia as well developing the characters of Bruce Wayne, his supporting cast, and rogues gallery. Capullo’s art also reinforces Scott Snyder’s themes and dialogue. There are callbacks to last issue, and the backup story perfectly ties into the main story even though Rafael Albuquerque’s art style is much different than Capullo’s.
Greg Capullo’s art style always complements and adds layer to Scott Snyder’s writing and dialogue. He adds subtle background details to develop characters or simply gives characters something to do while delivering dialogue. For example, Alfred and Bruce get...
