French director David Morlet, here billed under the anglicised David Morley, heads back behind the camera for Home Sweet Home, his first film since his feature debut (which, like this movie, he also wrote and directed), 2009′s superb zombie movie Mutants. Whilst that film didn’t reinvent the zombie genre, Morlet showed that straight zombie movies – and not just zombie comedies – can be great, outshining the majority of modern Us-lensed zombie flick and easily putting Romero’s recent work to shame.
Home Sweet Home has the simplest of plots: A young married couple comes home from a date night to discover that they are imprisoned in their own house with a methodical killer inside. That’s it. But as well all know, from small acorns do big oak trees grow – so it’s safe to...

Tagline: "If you go into the woods today..." D Films Corp will begin shooting their survival thriller Backcountry in August of 2013. This title will be shot in the Canadian wilderness and D Films Corp has released a movie poster and synopsis for the film. The film is not character heavy. Instead, couple Alex and Jenn head into the woods to find the Blackfoot Trail. They become lost at some point and they find themselves in bear country! According to the synopsis, only one character makes it back alive. The first poster for the film (above) suggests that Alex and Jenn will meet at least one Grizzly bear in the brush. And, the dripping blood, from the graphic, might suggest that this thriller will have a few survivalist horror moments, as well. More details on Backcountry are below. Director/writer: Adam MacDonald. *director Adam MacDonald is also an actor and he appeared,...

Home Sweet Home is an upcoming horror thriller which comes from director David Morley, and revolves around a couple imprisoned in their own house with a methodical killer inside. A familiar plot – maybe, but watch out – some seriously good cast is on board to let you know that sometimes you’re just not welcome… David Morley directed the movie from his own script which follows a thirtysomething couple that comes home from date night to find themselves imprisoned in their own house with a methodical killer inside. Sounds almost like a plot for some rom-com, huh? Here’s the rest of the story: A young...

Director/writer: David Morlet. Cast: Marty Adams, Shaun Benson, Meghan Heffern and Adam MacDonald. This reviewer is familiar with French director David Morlet's previous work, Mutants. Mutants was an undead film set in a post-apocalyptic landscape; Mutants was an exciting film, set in a dangerous environment. Morlet's second feature and first English film, Home Sweet Home, is less exciting, however. This second feature is meant as a suspense driven thriller, but there is very little tension here. The film's pacing is obscenely slow and the story is overly simple. The film's budget is also meagre and Morlet's latest outing will only satisfy the most die-hard horror or thriller fans. The film is not really plot driven. And, the story is broken down quite easily. A couple returns to their home after "date night." Someone is waiting for them there. A masked trespasser has sealed any exits and clothed himself in disposable coveralls.

After dinner a couple returns to home for some intimate alone time. Yet unbeknownst to them a masked killer has bolted the windows shut cut the phone lines and prepared the house for a deadly game of cat and mouse. Bottom line This one is more in an endless line of formulaic home invasion movies. Why David Morley (Mutants 2009) chose this theme as his Englishlanguage debut is puzzling since it seems to offer nothing new and given whose involved Im not holding out hope the execution will make up for it.

David Morlet (a.k.a. David Morley), who directed and co-wrote the undead-apocalypse film Mutants, scripted and helmed Home Sweet Home and was also one of the producers, along with Jordan Barker, who directed the 2007 ghost story The Marsh. “What’s really interesting is that this movie was actually born at the Berlin Film Festival at the Berlinale Market,” Barker tells Fango. “We decided that we wanted to make a feature together, and from script development to funding, production and post, this film came together in only about four or five months.”
Screen Media Films gave us the scoop that it has picked up U.S. rights to Home Sweet Home, with a release planned for the second quarter of 2013 (most likely June). Special features for the disc release are still to be finalized, but will likely include a director’s commentary, interviews and a still gallery (keep your eyes...

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

Well 2010 is almost over and it’s time for my obligatory Top Ten of the year. As with last year I’ll be compiling two movie Top 10’s – one cinematic releases and one direct to DVD list. Why? Well the majority of movie sites and blogs give credence to all the big releases of the year but, as I try to do all year, I want to highlight some films which you might have missed that you really should hunt down and watch.
This list is completely subjective, and you may not agree with any or all of my choices or the order in which they appear. Either way I’d love to read your thoughts on my choices good or bad, so don’t forget to leave a comment. Anyway, onto the list:
10) Hunt to Kill
Jim Rhodes (“Stone Cold” Steve Austin) is one bad ass Border Patrol Agent.

Director: David Morlet.
Writers: Louis-Paul Desanges and David Morlet.
Mutants is a French film from David Morlet ("Bitten"), which was distributed on DVD October, 26th in North America. The non-communicative IFC Films and Mpi Home Video both helped facilitate the release, with the film being called an homage to: "Danny Boyle's modern classic 28 Days Later" (Scott Weinberg, Fearnet). The chilling atmosphere between these two films is shared, but Morlet's approach is focused more on the relationships in a zombie apocalypse and biblical references, rather than family loss, or military corruption.
The film incorporates a couple of dead end subplots. However, Mutants is centrally of a romantic union between the infected Marco (Francis Renaud) and Sonia (Helene de Fougerolles). Sonia's efforts to save Marco from complete infection involve persuasion, communication with a local military base (Noah), and a hit and run battle with a group of malingering bandits. The film...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy"
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Released by Universal Home Entertainment
Yes, we're finally getting the footage of the original Marty McFly, Eric Stoltz, for the first time, but for many simply having the hi-def version of Robert Zemeckis' time-travel franchise will be good enough. Commentaries, deleted scenes, a full-length documentary and much, much more come on this new set of the trilogy.
"Alien Anthology"
Directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Released by Fox Home Entertainment
While not as much of an upgrade over its previous DVD release as "Back to the Future," the Blu-ray update of the four "Alien" films worth owning now boasts isolated scores for each film, all of Ridley Scott's sketches for the first "Alien," the uncut documentary of David Fincher's ill-fated "Alien 3" as...

Mutants
Stars: Francis Renaud, Hélène De Fougerolles | Written and Directed by David Morlet
The debut feature from French writer and director David Morlet, Mutants is set in a world devastated by a pandemic virus that turns human beings into primitive and bloodthirsty creatures, the last hope for survivors is the military station ‘Noah’ where scientists are researching the cure.
Marco (Renaud) and Sonia (Fougerolles) set off to find the secret base to escape from the ‘mutants’. When they are attacked Marco becomes contaminated and little by little begins to undergo the same changes as the other creatures. Sonia, pregnant with her first child, must somehow fight off the hordes and force herself to fight the man she once loved.
Mutants is yet another example of brilliant French horror cinema, with a story that is part Dawn of the Dead, part Day of the Dead, but all awesome. The film sets...

Taking a different tack on the usual themes of a Zombie outbreak, French writer and director David Morley’s claustrophobic little undead/infected horror ride of a debut feature…Mutants, is heading for a UK DVD. It’s a very bare bones release, with extras consisting of the grand total of a “theatrical (boohoo!) trailer,” but what the hell we’re glad to finally get a chance to see it. Mutants goes on sale May 10th. The threat of a virus born zombie apocalypse comes back to haunt viewers yet again with “Mutants” from French writer director David Morlet, marking his first full length feature. As with so many other recent undead operas, the film takes its influence quite obviously from Danny Boyle’s crossover hit “28 Days Later”, though Morlet does manage to add somewhat of a twist by throwing in some Cronenberg style body horror amongst all the sprinting, howling ghouls. This, combined with the film’s Gallic flavour and magnificent scenery do help it to stand out somewhat from the increasingly overcrowded playing field, with Morlet proving himself a skilled practitioner of the form. Following its domestic run and some decent word of mouth, the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via Momentum Pictures. After a series of captions solemnly inform the viewer that the world is basically screwed following the release of a deadly mutating virus,...

When we ran the trailer for David Morlet's Mutants last week, I said, "f you're going to rehash a tried-and-true plot device, you should do it well." That device, the viral-outbreak that causes horrific craziness as a substitution for the dead rising from the grave, is actually very well executed in Morlet's film (that he wrote as well) -- at least for most of it. It's an uneven piece, but still a worthwhile one.
The story in Mutants is a pretty simple one -- an unidentified virus breaks out and causes the infected to transform into screaming, raving, atavistic cannibals. A few things separate it from the conventional entries: there's absolutely no history of either the outbreak, or the characters. After a fairly gripping opening sequence featuring a young woman running from the disturbing shrieking in the forest, we simply end up in an ambulance where a young couple,...

IFC Films is offering David Morlet’s French thriller, Mutants, on VOD February 10. Sonia (Hélène de Fougerolles) and Marco (Francis Renaud) are a couple who find themselves caught in the middle of a viral pandemic that turns humans into creatures. When they seek shelter from the “mutants” Marco becomes contaminated and is eventually transformed into a monster. Sonia has to fight not only for her own life, but the life of their unborn child and protect herself from the man she once knew and loved. I’m curious to find out what these creatures actually are. As much as I love zombies, I’m [...]

Below is the trailer for the French horror film Mutants, which is timed rather poorly considering the imminent release of the remake of Romero's The Crazies. I say timed poorly because they appear incredibly similar in plot -- according to Bloody Disgusting, Mutants is about:
... a world devastated by a pandemic virus that turns human beings into primitive and bloodthirsty creatures, Marco and Sonia set off to find a secret base to escape from the "mutants". When the latter attack them, Marco is contaminated too. Little by little, he undergoes the same changes. Sonia, who is expecting a baby, is then forced to fight her worst enemy, the man she loves.
So, yeah, a little bit of 28 Days Later, a little bit of the Living Dead series, a little bit of The Crazies. Not exactly original. That said, if you're going to rehash a tried-and-true plot device, you should do it well.

Mumbai, Dec 13 (Ians) French actress Helene de Fougerolles, who was here for the French film festival, says she loves Indian movies as they cater to everyone unlike cinema in France.
“I love Indian cinema because it’s made for everyone. It’s unlike French cinema, as there are different sects of audiences for every genre and you can’t satisfy all with one film,” Helene told Ians.
Her film “Mutants” was screened during the French Film Festival here last week. Directed by David Morley, “Mutants” is a horror movie that shows the world devastated by a pandemic virus that turns human beings into primitive and bloodthirsty creatures.
And Helene didn’t have much trouble.

The Bottom Line: A worthy addition to the zombie canon that, despite a predictable third act, gives zombie fans something new and chilling to contemplate.
Repeat after me: in the classic zombie survival narrative, the enemies are not the zombies/mutants/infected miscreants, but ourselves. How many times have we seen a group of survivors fending off wave after wave of happy-go-lucky flesh-eaters before turning against each other in a fit of paranoia, claustrophobia, or plain stupidity? Quite enough, and that’s part of the allure of the zombie genre, methinks. Romero started it, and most zombie flicks seem to have continued that trend in one shape or another.
Mutants, a French virus/zombie film by David Morley, certainly does, but it’s added its own distinct element. In this incarnation of the tried-and-true formula,...

On two occasions, coming from two separate friends whom I consider trustworthy and honorable, I was told a similar story. Both individuals are teachers, and what they related to me was being caught in a situation on the first day of school where they were rolling off the attendance list and came across a most unusual name:
Shithead.
Confused by the awkward appellation, both reacted in kindred fashion, and instead of saying the child’s first name (a young girl in both instances), referred to the student by their surname (Miss So-and-So) and inquired as to how correctly pronounce their first name.
In both cases, the female student defiantly retorted:
“Sha-theed!”
I bring this up not simply as an amusing anecdote, but as a reference to Mutants, one of the films I saw at the Fantasia film festival in Montreal last week. Because just like the unfortunately christened Shithead, Mutants,...

Crush and Blush Directed by Lee Kyoung-mi * 1/2 Lee-Kyoung-mi’s first feature tries too hard to be the “polar opposite” of a romantic comedy. The story of a male teacher being stalked by a former pupil who has now become a teacher herself in order to be closer to him to attract his attention simply does not sustain the premise past the opening 20 minutes. The lead character, Me-sook, is played in an over-the-top fashion, and the film seems to have been made for the art-house crowd in spite of its plot, which seems ripe for a broad comedic treatment. The films also seems haphazardly edited and is often needlessly confusing. Grace Directed by Paul Solet *** ½ Childbirth can be a horrific experience if things go wrong, a fact ably exploited in Grace, which acts as a surefire contraceptive. An impressive first feature by director Paul Solet, who delivers an ambitious and masterful web of chills,...

[Our thnaks to Matthew Grinshpun for the following review.]
It’s been claimed more than once that vampires are the new zombies, and a quick glance at the Fantasia Film Festival’s programming would seem to settle the matter. That said, no genre festival would be complete with at least one picture to bear the flesh-eating banner, and this year the role falls to David Morley’s Mutants. Unfortunately, Morley’s uninspired entry fails to carry the standard. Shot in a barren Picardy, buried in snow and washed in gray, Mutants left me feeling cold.

Let's get it out of the way, first thing out of the gate: Yes, the latest horror import from France -- the appropriately-titled Mutants -- as a lot in common with Danny Boyle's modern classic 28 Days Later. In fact, Mutants skirts dangerously close to "copycat" syndrome on more than one occasion. But it doesn't take a veteran horror hound to see that first-time director David Morley is much more interested in homage than ripoff. Hell, one could even call Mutants "an unofficial French sequel" to 28 Days and / or 28 Weeks Later if they chose, and that description would certainly be appropriate -- if, I must say, just a little bit short-sighted. Yes, this film is about a world in which a horrible virus has...

Fantasia Festival is North America’s premiere (and largest) genre film festival. It is also my favorite film festival and so I could not wait to share the highlights of this years line up. Below is just some of the films we will be reviewing on our upcoming podcasts. The Children - North American Premiere UK Dir: Tom Shankland A holiday weekend turns into a nightmarish battle for survival when children inexplicably begin to slaughter their parents. Far more frightening than Children Of The Corn or the bulk part of other killer kids pics that have preceded it, this British powerhouse shocker ranks among the best horror film offerings of recent years. The Children inverts unconditional love with an impact that will freeze your blood. Would you be able to protect yourself if the people you loved wanted to cut you to pieces without any sense or reason? The film's terrors are character-driven,...

While we wait for the schedule for Fantasia 2009 to be finalized, we did receive a couple of press release announcing the fest's line-up, and per usual, those of you who are planning to attend are in for one helluva genre extravaganza.
First up is a bit of news about the fest's extended schedule: Due to a veritable deluge of feature presentations, Fantasia is extending its 13th edition for two extra days and will therefore be taking place from July 9th to the 29th at Concordia University’s Hall Theatre. As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:

I’ve always had a major love for zombies. Like most fans of the zombie genre, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news of the upcoming feature film adaptation of Max Brook’s NY Times Best Seller, World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War. Unfortunately, little information has been released and I believe they’re still hashing out the script.
To temporarily satisfy the hunger for all-things undead, director/writer David Morley’s debut film Mutants was recently released in France and will surely make it’s way here soon in a theater or, more likely, on DVD. Mutants follows Sonia, an Emt worker secluded in an abandoned French hospital desperately trying to save her infected boyfriend from mutation. Meanwhile outside the hospital, the entire country has become overrun by the walking dead. Helene de Fougerolles and Francis Renaud star as the ill-fated couple.
