TORONTO -- The market for Canadian music TV viewers became an uncertain one Tuesday with news that MTV Canada and MTV2 will go off the air June 30. The move followed MTV Networks International, which holds minority stakes in both channels, announcing it would exercise its right to exit a 2001 agreement with majority shareholder Craig Media after the Canadian broadcaster last year was acquired by rival Chum Ltd. But the Viacom unit, without revealing its hand Tuesday, hinted it would remain in the Canadian market. "MTV Networks International remains committed to Canadian audiences and will continue our strong presence in the market via broadcast television distribution and digital media activities," the U.S. broadcaster said in a statement. MTV spokesman Rob Hooper offered no comment beyond the company statement, except to indicate MTV would unveil its Canadian plans in the coming weeks.
