Star Wars: The Acolyte premieres on Disney+ on June 4, and the first reactions from critics have started finding their way online (via SFFGazette.com).
These are made up of a mix of people who attended a splashy premiere for a screening of the two-part premiere and reviewers who were sent the first four instalments to view online. It's worth noting then that not everyone here will have been caught up in the excitement of yesterday evening's event, meaning these verdicts may hold more weight than usual.
Regardless, the reactions so far are overwhelmingly positive. It sounds like the mystery elements work well, as do The Acolyte's practical stunts and the new ways this series utilises the Force. The cast, and particularly Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-jae, is also praised.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con will look very different from what people have come to expect over the last 15 years or so.
Thanks to the first double strike to hit the American entertainment industry since 1960, almost no members of the Writers Guild of America or SAG-AFTRA who work in TV or film will be attending in any official capacity. And without stars and scribes to draw in fans, TV and movie studios have mostly pulled out too.
That means, at this storied gathering of geeks, the comic book creators who are the ostensible reason the event exists will have the floor almost entirely to themselves.

Director Catherine Hardwicke will helm the fantasy-adventure epic Heathen for Constatin Film and Prime Universe Films. The project adapts the namesake Vault Comics series that centers on Aydis, a fierce Viking warrior who is scorned by her village for kissing another woman and then, after witnessing widespread injustice toward women, declares a one-woman feminist war on Odin himself.
The acclaimed series by Natasha Alterici weaves feminism and queer themes into the familiar tapestry of Norse mythology, a mix that promises to deliver a Viking film unlike any previous one in the annals of Hollywood. Created, written, and drawn by Alterici, the Heathen comics debuted in 2017 with the help of an impassioned Kickstarter investor community. Mark Wahlberg is getting into the comic book business, and he wants his upcoming sci-fi comic Alien Bounty Hunter to be the "next big thing." He and producer Stephen Levinson (Boardwalk Empire, Ballers) are hoping that this comic book they've developed with be a big sci-fi film franchise. Thanks to the press release we have some details on the story:
In Alien Bounty Hunter, Ben Madsen is tasked with apprehending a wanted fugitive…but quickly learns that his target is not of this world. Madsen must track his mark through an alien enclave populated by the galaxy’s most dangerous aliens—right here on Earth.
I'll be honest, it doesn't sound like anything we already haven't seen before, but maybe the story will be decent. Wahlberg and Levinson had this to say about it in a joint statement:

20th Century Fox has partnered with comic publisher Boom! Studios to create a one-shot comic that acts as a prequel to the upcoming "Hitman: Agent 47," the second attempt to adapt the famed video game franchise to the big screen.
The comic sees Agent 47 hunting a deadly adversary in a story that leads directly into the opening scene of the new film. This marks the first time the character will appear in a comic. F.J. DeSanto ("Cyborg 009") has penned the comic which will have art by Jesus Hervas.
Rupert Friend, Zachary Quinto and Hannah Ware star in the film which is being produced by Charles Gordon, Adrian Askarieh, and Alex Young. The movie hits cinemas August 28th.

As we’ve been reporting, Syfy had its Upfront presentation to potential advertisers Wednesday night, and they spent yesterday issuing press releases. It’s a good thing they held the event at a pier, as there is a boatload of information included in the summary press release below. We made sure to get it posted before the weekend, since it will take you the entire weekend to absorb it all.
Some of it is information we’ve already posted, like the Ringworld and Childhood’s End development and the High Moon pilot production, some of it we posted about fairly recently, like Ronald D. Moore‘s Helix, some of it we haven’t heard about in quite some time, like Orion, Proof, and Dominion, and some, like the nonscripted shows, the anthology, and some of the projects announced, are news to us.

DC Entertainment is launching its first comic that is creator-owned and has no connection to either Vertigo nor the main DC universe since the launch of the company’s reboot, The New 52. Written and created by F.J. DeSanto and Todd Farmer, Insurgent is a six issue mini-series drawn by Federico Dallocchio that is steeped in high-tech military hardware and political conspiracy. It's due to hit shelves in January. Photos: Top Ten: San Diego Comic-Con According to Farmer, it’s set in a world where terrorism has been defeated thanks to U.S. government-created sleeper agents.

It was back in April of this year that we got the first word on Black Sky, the new project Ben Templesmith has teamed up with Halo-8 Entertainment to create, and finally today the illustrated film's teaser has hit online.
Black Sky is created and illustrated by Templesmith (co-creator 30 Days of Night) and directed by Halo-8's Matt Pizzolo (Godkiller). Templesmith designed Black Sky from the outset to be produced as both an illustrated film and a comic book series.
According to Pizzolo, "The difference between an illustrated film and a motion comic is kind of the difference between a movie that was shot in 3D versus a movie that was shot in 2D but got a 3D post-conversion. We're not repurposing an existing comic book here; we're building something unique from scratch."

"Dead boys, dead boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when Zeros come for you?" I do hope those lyrics are included in the opening theme song for "Zeros", one of the seven newly announced programs Syfy has in development. If zombies don't tickle your fancy, then Kevin Sorbo back fighting mythological monsters and Lee Majors getting all bionic again might.
Of greatest interest to horror fans is going to be the zombedy "Zeros". Here's how Syfy's press release describes the show.
In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.

If, like most of us here in the Dread Central offices, you were a bit disappointed in the portrayal of Medusa in the latest version of Clash of the Titans, you should be pretty pleased to hear about an upcoming project from Halo-8's Matt Pizzolo entitled Medusa: Year One. Along with more details on that, we also have some early news on what exactly Ben Templesmith will be doing with those crazy kids at Halo-8.
First, per Ugo, here's how Pizzolo describes Medusa: Year One -- "A twist on the Medusa origin-story kind of like Wicked, but mixed with a big epic romance like Titanic, but way less corny. And it's gonna be a blast to animate those snakes." Halo-8's president also acknowledged the departure Medusa: Year One is from his more recent work like Godkiller. "Most of my recent stuff has been pretty edgy and racy, but...

Motion comics like the one that DC created for "Watchmen" and the original Spider-Woman production that Marvel put together drew a lot of attention to a digital branch of comics-inspired entertainment. Halo-8 Entertainment has taken that genre into an expanded form that the studio calls "illustrated film," and they've informed Splash Page that popular comics creator Ben Templesmith will step on board for a potential announcement next week week at C2E2.
"When I first discovered Halo-8 and their approach to entertainment, I knew I'd found a kindred spirit," said "Hack/Slash" creator Tim Seeley in an official statement. An adaptation of Seeley's "Loaded Bible: Blood of Christ" comic is already in production at Halo-8.
"They make the kinds of films they want, they don't answer to a major studio, and they know how to use technology and make it work for them," he added.

Apple Tablet Predictions, Frank Miller On Twitter, And 'Batman & Robin' #7 In Today's Twitter Report
The Apple Tablet rumored to be announced at the company's press conference tomorrow has the attention of much of the comic book industry, and artist Mitch Breitweiser was the latest in the Twitter Report to add his thoughts to the mix.
And speaking of rumors, Frank Miller may or may not be on Twitter now. "The Spirit" movie producer F.J. DeSanto and "Fanboys" director Kyle Newman have lightly verified the account with their own tweets, but until he posts a picture or gets a Verified badge, I recommend caution. One more thing I recommend is picking up Cameron Stewart's first issue of "Batman & Robin" this week with Grant Morrison. I have high hopes for the arc, and there was a fun exchange between Stewart and Jason Aaron yesterday about what he would have drawn if the opportunity to work with Morrison hadn't come up.
