End Of The Road is a festival that keeps its promises. The cultured leftfield shindig – where croquet tournaments break out in forest glades and peacocks roam the trimmed lawns of Dorset’s Larmer Tree Gardens, unbothered by the experimental folk, rock, rap and electronic tomfoolery floating across the site – has been promising a weekend headlined by indie giants Pixies and Bright Eyes since 2020. Covid scuppered that event, and post-pandemic travel issues forced the 2021 bill to become more UK-based. But this year, Eotr puts its music where its mouth is at last, with plenty more curveballs thrown in to keep this crowd of discerning alternative music fans pleasingly off-balance.
The opening Thursday night bill is a brain-rattling case in point. On the main Woods Stage, LA’s Sudan Archives sets out to invent jig-hop, interspersing psychosexual ambient raps with ruined snippets of Irish folk played on the fiddle she brandishes throughout.

This past winter, Pixies decamped to Guilford, Vermont to record their first new album in three years, Doggerel. While the album won’t be arriving until Sept. 30, fans can get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the record in a new short documentary.
The clip opens with frontman Black Francis offering one side of how the Doggerel sessions came about. “Fortunately my kids are old enough now that they’re not gonna burn the place down or anything, so I just said, ‘Guys, just leave me alone for a couple of weeks.

The Pixies — frontman Black Francis, bassist Paz Lenchantin, drummer David Lovering, and guitarist Joey Santiago — sit down with Andy Greene to discuss their new album Beneath the Eyrie and their whole career in a new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast.
Among many other topics, they discussed playing their very first concert (Boston, 1986), the perils of opening for U2 on a 1992 leg of the Zoo TV tour, the very smooth experience of opening for Weezer earlier this year, the difficulties of introducing new music to an audience hungry for nostalgia,...

Pixies will issue a new studio album in September and document the recording process with an upcoming behind-the-scenes podcast, “Past Is Prologue, Pixies.” The alt-rock band recorded their as-yet-untitled seventh LP with producer Tom Dalgety, who helmed their most recent record, 2016’s Head Carrier.
The quartet — singer-guitarist Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist-singer Paz Lenchantin, drummer David Lovering — wrote the album throughout 2018 and recorded it in December at Dreamland Recordings near Woodstock, New York. The record is their second with Lenchantin, who joined the lineup in 2014 (following original bassist Kim Deal...

Legendary Alternative rock band Pixies formed in Boston in 1986, comprising of front man Black Francis, Joey Santiago on guitars, bass player Kim Deal, and drummer David Lovering on drums. The 4 albums they released before their breakup in 1993 have gone down in history as some of the most influential albums in Alt-Rock history.
They’re noteworthy not just because of how good the music is, but how surrealist the bands lyrics are. Now, after the release of ‘Ep-1′ and ‘Bagboy’, the bands first material since comeback single ‘Bam Thwok’ back in 2004, and the departure of Kim Deal, I look back at the weird and wonderful Pixies songs to come out of the mind of the band.
Here are 10 of the maddest;
10. Debaser
Opening with that iconic bass line, ‘Debaser’, the opening track from the band’s second album ‘Doolittle’, is not only musically genius, but lyrically mad. Inspired by a Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel,...

The question of whether the Pixies will carry on without original bassist Kim Deal has been answered loud and clear. Deal -- also a founding member of The Breeders -- announced her departure from the group just a few weeks ago. The remaining Pixies surprised fans early this morning by releasing a brand new song called "Bagboy," along with a colorfully destructive video. When the influential college rock band -- featuring Black Francis, Deal, David Lovering and Joey Santiago -- reunited in 2004 after a decade apart, they concentrated on touring and largely steered clear of the studio. The last original...

Kim Deal, the bassist for The Pixies, has decided to leave the band. The other three members of the alternative-rock band announced her departure on the Pixies' Facebook page Friday (June 14).
In the official message posted, there isn't too much information about why Deal left the band she joined 27 years ago. Signed by Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering, the short note reads:
"We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best."
The cordial tone indicates that Deal's departure is not the result of some big disagreement between band members. That was not the case back...

Bassist Kim Deal has quit the Pixies after 25 years. The band released a statement Friday confirming that Deal, who has been an on-again, off-again member of the highly influential rock outfit, had decided to part ways with the group.
Here's the band's full statement, via the Pixies' Facebook page:

Rolling Stone notes that Deal first joined the act when she answered a 1986 ad the band had placed in the Boston Phoenix. During her early work with the group, she used the alias Mrs.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Pixies' second album, "Surfer Rosa," a seminal LP that has gone down in Rolling Stone history as one of the 500 greatest records of all time.
Every indie rock band of the past two and half decades owes a great deal to the Pixies, the Boston-bred quartet that seamlessly merged psychedelia, noise rock and alternative grunge to create one of the 1980's most memorable music projects. Formed in the collegiate environment of University of Massachusetts, the band -- comprised of Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering -- predates Nirvana as a catalyst for the immeasurable rock boom of the 1990s.
Like most indie rock bands, the Pixies were not a chart topping force, but their second album, the lyrically named "Surfer Rosa," earned accolades on its own after its 1988 release. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice dubbed the record "the Amerindie find of the year,...

He has been known as Frank Black and Black Francis, but when he was born on this day 45 years ago, the frontman of the Pixies was called Charles Thompson IV. No matter what you call him, he has plenty to celebrate on his birthday, as Black Francis helped invent alternative rock and was part of an incredible group who didn't need to go to the mainstream because the mainstream came to them.
Francis grew up shuttling back and forth between Boston (where he was born) and Los Angeles. He eventually settled in Boston and started a band with Joey Santiago, a friend he met while in college at the University of Massachusetts. They recruited bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering, and the Pixies were born. The dynamic songwriting, razor-sharp playing and Francis' obtuse, literate lyrics made the group an instant success among indie-minded music fans when their debut Ep...

“Each age, it is found, must write its own books; or rather, each generation for the next succeeding. The books of an older period will not fit this.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson “You think I’m dead but I sail away on a wave of mutilation.” —Pixies, “Wave of Mutilation” Black Francis of the Pixies during the Doolittle tour, Chicago, 2009. Photograph by Charlie Clark. Are the Pixies old, or is the story of their music just beginning? I found myself pondering this question during last night’s sold-out concert at Hammerstein Ballroom, in New York City, which doubled as a 20th-anniversary celebration of the band’s indispensable album Doolittle. The Pixies played the album front-to-back, framing it with a few B-sides—some “so obscure we had to learn them”—and then capping the night with an encore of favorites from other albums. But back to the question. Physically, the band’s...

The U.S. tour begins Nov. 4, and like the European leg, will feature the album performed in its entirety, as well as B-sides associated with the project. The Pixies-- Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering--will stop in nine cities for 14 theater dates at 2,000-3,000-seat venues, such as Chicago's Aragon Ballroom and Oakland's Fox Theater. The good news is the Pixies are doing a very special tour to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their classic album "Doolittle." The bad news is the they are only playing Europe. Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering will open the tour in Dublin on Oct. 1. Tickets go on sales Friday, July 3. The band will perform "Doolittle" in its entirety, as well as the B-sides associated with the project. As a little refresher course, "Doolittle" was the Pixies' second album and its first released internationally. It reached No. 8 on the U.K. charts. Among the top tracks...
