- Was the first engineer to record in stereo, giving Atlantic Records, where he currently was the chief engineer, an edge when stereo became popular. They had been recording in stereo for a few years before, so they were able release their material in stereo right away as other studios were updating their equipment.
- Worked on the Manhatten Project from 1942 to 1946 at Columbia University. He also monitored a pair of nuclear explosions in the Pacific in 1946. Columbia University, however, did not merit him any credit for his work on the project. That is the reason he left the university and landed in the music industry.
