The post-production and VFX sector in Western Australia is poised to grow substantially, with the state government today announcing a 20 per cent post, digital and visual effects (Pdv) rebate.
The move sees Wa step up to compete with South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland, who each offer a 10 per cent Pdv incentive.
Under the guidelines, producers can apply for a 20 per cent rebate on the first $500,000 of Pdv expenditure, and a further 10 per cent for all expenditure over that.
Unlike the other states, Wa’s rebate is discretionary. However, the minimum spend is much smaller at just $100,000 – for the Sa rebate the minimum spend is $250,000 and in Queensland and Nsw it’s $500,000.
Each state’s rebate is able to be combined with the 30 per cent federal Pdv offset.

Sony's The Shallows was shot in Queensland, and a large chunk of the effects work was completed by Perth production house Boogie Monster, who created over 130 graphically-driven visual effects shots for the film, in which Blake Lively is terrorised by an angry shark.
Boogie Monster's portfolio of shots was created under the eye of visual effects supervisor Nathan McGuinness. The company edged out a number of international effects houses to get the chance to create the opening and closing main title sequences of the film.

The West Australian Screen Awards celebraes excellence and achievements in feature film, short film, web series, music videos, television production, documentary, games and interactive productions.
Short drama We Were Here, directed by David Vincent Smith and produced by Joshua Gilbert and Simon Camp, earned six nominations, the most for the awards.
Short comedy Flushed, directed and produced by Richard Eames, also received six nominations.
ABC comedy TV series The Legend of Gavin Tanner, written and directed by Matt Lovkis and Henry Inglis and produced by Lauren Elliott received five nominations, as did short drama Sol Bunker, produced by Glen Stasiuk and directed by Nathan Mewett.
Film and Television Institute Wa (Fti) chief executive, Paul Bodlovich, said the WASAs were one of the most important events on the cultural calendar in Western Australia.
