The major broadcast networks are trying very hard this year to do what they do best – create franchise drama series built around the adventures of larger-than-life characters.
Kathy Bates, Kaitlin Olson, Carrie Preston and Shanola Hampton are among the female actors hoping to click as distinctive protagonists with new series in the 2023-24 season. Bates will bring to life a next-generation “Matlock,” while Preston limns a new chapter for Elsbeth Tascioni, the attorney character she has played on and off on CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount+’s “The Good Fight” since 2010.
This is good news for the hundreds of international television buyers heading to Los Angeles for next week’s LA Screenings market. Another welcome development is that the largest media congloms are now on a big push to reopen their doors to third-party buyers, after a few years of holding back the biggest shows for in-house streaming services.

According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the network’s other five pilots remain in contention at this time.
The project now known as “High Potential” was originally ordered to pilot at ABC in September 2022, with Olson boarding the show in February. It is based on the French series “Haut Potentiel Intellectuel (Hpi).”
The official logline states: “’High Potential’ follows a single mom with an exceptional mind (Olson), whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata).”

ABC is moving forward with one of its six pilots — with more a possibility at a later date.
The Disney-owned network has handed out a series order to its Drew Goddard drama, which now has a title: High Potential. The drama starring Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) is one of six pilots that ABC ordered this season, with decisions on the other five coming at a later date as broadcast networks continue to shift to a year-round development model.

ABC has handed Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson, a series order.
The pickup is not surprising; the drama, based on the popular French detective series Hip (High Intellectual Potential) has been the clear frontrunner among ABC’s crop of 2023 pilots.
It is the only pilot ABC is making a decision ahead of its upfront. The remaining five, dramas The Good Lawyer, The Hurt Unit and Judgment, and comedies Keeping it Together (fka Drop-Off) and Public Defenders, remain in contention.
Networks already have been shifting toward year-round development and have not been doing all of their pilot decisions before upfronts. With the writers strike this year, they are even more cautious, taking a wait-and-see approach given the financial commitment and logistical issues associated with a new series order if the work stoppage stretches over several months. ABC has awhile before the pilot casts’ options are up, and...

Ken Marino credits his pal Adam Scott for making the unlikely and unexpected “Party Down” revival a reality. “Adam helped guide this and make this happen in a real way,” he tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast. “I think everybody in that cast recognized how special it was, and to just kind of go back and to get to do some more, to be with these people again, creatively, it’s a real gift.”
The first two seasons of “Party Down” aired on Starz in 2009 and 2010; the revival takes place a decade after the show’s last episode and features the returns of Marino as Ron, the slightly clueless catering manager who now owns the business — well, running it out of his van — and Scott as Henry, the sardonic failed actor who’s now a teacher and working on the side with Party Down to help pay for his alimony.

The CW on Tuesday made decisions on its four remaining traditional pilots, picking up two, Kung Fu and The Republic of Sarah, to series, and rolling the other two, The Lost Boys and Maverick.
The decision added yet another chapter in the long journey to the screen for Rob Thomas’ The Lost Boys reboot. The Lost Boys pilot had already been in production when the pandemic shut down all filming in mid-March, so the CW brass had seen some footage before opting to roll it and proceed with Kung Fu instead..
On a press call Thursday, the CW president Mark Pedowitz said he has spoken with Thomas and the rest of the pilot’s creative team about the decision.

Channel 4 has denied claims it has faked aspects of The Island with Bear Grylls.
The programme sees 13 men attempt to survive life on an island in the Pacific with limited tools and water.
Producers have been accused of topping up the island's natural water supply and releasing two crocodiles onto the island as a source of food.
Four of the contestants are also thought to have previously worked with Grylls.
Cameraman and production crew member Dan Etheridge worked on the Discovery Channel's Man vs Wild, while director Rupert Smith previously worked with Grylls on 2011's Escape To The Legion.
Denying any wrongdoing, a Channel 4 spokesperson said: "It clearly states in the programme voice over that trained crew are part of the experiment, living under exactly the same conditions as the other men.
"Like all of the men on the island, their professions are captioned on screen and their backgrounds are discussed.
