When a body vanishes from a morgue, it's only the beginning of morbid things to come in The Dead Center. The latest film from Billy Senese, The Dead Center is out in select Us theaters and on digital HD today and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray October 15th, and we had a chance to catch up with director Billy Senese to talk about his latest film.
I understand that The Dead Center was born from a short film you wrote called The Suicide Tapes. Can you talk about transforming that idea into what it is now?
Billy Senese: At the heart of the Suicide Tapes were the psychiatric interview sessions. And as I started to develop it into a feature, I knew they were going to be the heart of The Dead Center, too. I find sessions like these so interesting. Healing the mind is a tricky thing.

There’s nothing conceptually all that special about “The Dead Center,” but sometimes it’s all in the execution, and this creepily restrained horror thriller manages to never seem entirely predictable while nonetheless drawing on numerous prior genre influences, from the “[rec]” films to “The Exorcist III.” It’s an impressive leap forward for writer-director Billy Senese, whose 2014 feature debut “Closer to God” was more in the realm of a nice try. It opens on ten U.S. screens on Oct. 11, with release in disc formats Oct. 22.
A big, gory mess of what’s assumed to be a suicide victim is delivered to a morgue, tagged and bagged. But later he proves not-so-dead — waking with a start, he tears out of his body bag, then stumbles to another part of the public hospital, tucking himself into an available bed before passing out again. It is there that he is found by...

An apparently dead man mysteriously comes back to life in this tantalising, atmospheric thriller
The cult that gathered around Shane Carruth – the polymath writer-director-performer who dreamed up the brilliant and baffling Primer and Upstream Colour – will want to reconvene for this effective low-key chiller in which Carruth takes top acting billing, while handing directing duties to Billy Senese.
With its twin-track storytelling, Senese’s film owes less to Carruth’s filmography than to upmarket TV fare such as True Detective and the recent Unbelievable. In one narrative line, a conflicted, corner-cutting psych-ward doctor (Carruth) engages with a hulking patient (Jeremy Childs) who revived in the morgue after an apparently successful suicide attempt; in the other, a medical examiner (Bill Feehely) heads into the field to investigate how this John Doe got on the slab, and how he got up off it.

One night, in a hospital morgue, a man brought in as a suicide victim suddenly wakes up. Confused and apparent missing parts of his memory, he begins to wander. Before long he finds himself in the office of a psychiatrist who urges him to stay calm as he tries to work out just what his problem is - but what's really going on could be quite beyond the scope of the psychiatrist's understanding and dangerous on a scale he has never previously imagined.
Weaving together strands of psychological and occult horror, Billy Senese's slow-burning thriller The Dead Center is bound to give audiences a chill. It's premièring in the Frightfest strand at this year's Glasgow Film Festival and Billy agreed to answer some questions about it, beginning by explaining how the idea originated.

Arrow Films has acquired horror movie “The Dead Center” in a multi-territory deal that includes the U.S. and the U.K.
Billy Senese (“Closer to God”) wrote the screenplay and directed the film. It was co-produced by, and stars, Shane Carruth, who previously wrote, directed and starred in “Primer” and made Sundance favorite “Upstream Color.” It is the first picture he has starred in but not directed.
Jeremy Childs (“Preacher”) and Poorna Jagannathan (“Mile 22″) are also in the film. It tells the story of an unidentified suicide victim (Childs) who comes back to life and walks out of the morgue. Medical examiner Edward Graham (Bill Feehely) begins the search for the missing body, unaware the subject has ended up in the hospital psychiatric ward under the watchful eye of psychiatrist Daniel Forrester. As Graham and Forrester investigate further, it becomes apparent that the patient has brought something terrible back from the other side.

The La Film Festival has placed a heavy emphasis on diversity in its competition film slate, with 42% of the films directed by women and 39% helmed by people of color.
The 24th edition of the festival is also positioning itself as an event for unveiling lesser-known talent. It will take place Sept. 20-28 as it moves from its traditional June slot to the fall awards season.
The Los Angeles event follow the Venice International Film Festival, which begins in late August; the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over Labor Day; and the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, which starts on Sept. 6. The festival will end just as the New York Film Festival begins.
“Our mission of finding fresh new voices from different geographical and cultural axes remains true,” said L Film Festival director Jennifer Cochis. “These storytellers are united by their ability to transport, impact and inspire audiences with the power of their craft.

Forty feature films including 24 world premieres highlight the official La Film Festival competition lineup in the fest’s move into the crowded fall festival corridor, away from their previous early-summer perch.
Among the movies in competition is the highly regarded Swedish film Border (Grans) from director Ali Abbasi, a Neon pickup out of Cannes that took the top prize in that festival’s No. 2 competition, Un Certain Regard. It is listed as a “California Premiere,” which means it likely will show up first in Telluride, Toronto or both before Laff, which runs September 20-28. It will play in the World Fiction Competition across a field of categories that also include U.S. Fiction, Documentary, La Muse, Nightfall. Short Films, and Episodes: Indie Series from the web.

“What is it that’s inside of you?” This question is left unanswered at the end of the first teaser trailer for The Dead Center, the newest supernatural thriller from director Billy Senese. Spoken by Shane Carruth’s character, the mysterious line of dialogue is seemingly in response to the ominous and haunting voiceover predominantly heard throughout the teaser.
Unfortunately, there’s not many plot details available, although I suggest that the mystery around the film’s details instills a bit more intrigue in the project as a whole. However, based on the calculated amount of information available in the trailer, it seems as if The Dead Center tells the story of someone who’s found himself to be immortal, as hinted by the line “I died and I came back… Wasn’t the first time.” Regardless, the trailer is enthralling enough on its own – constructed with vague and obstructive cinematography played over an eerie,...

Dr. Victor Reed is a brilliant geneticist who has just achieved a huge scientific breakthrough by successfully cloning the first human being, an adorable baby girl named Elizabeth. This immediately becomes a media spectacle and ignites a firestorm of debate concerning the moral and religious implications of such a discovery. Soon, Dr. Reed and his family lose all sense of privacy and safety as they are swarmed by protesters and the media. Their biggest threat, however, could be Victor’s own secret.
A Frankenstein Story is a science fiction thriller of the creepiest kind. It explores the impact that cloning a human could have. It explores the moral, scientific and religious inpacts of such an action also what might happen if it all goes wrong.

More standard horror flick, if elegantly presented, than the thoughtful science fiction drama it thinks it is. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big science fiction geek
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
And here we have a familiar story. Oh, not the fact that Closer to God is a modern updating of Frankenstein, swapping out reanimation of the dead for cloning: that is done rather cleverly. No, it’s the familiar story of many indie science-fiction dramas: they’ve got potentially intriguing ideas but don’t know what to do with them, and so what could have been an effective and eerie short film becomes a too-long — and this one is only 80 minutes! — feature that only hints at possibilities that seem deliberately left unexplored. Developing truly SFnal concepts and bringing them to a satisfying conclusion is hard, true,...

Turning a hot-button issue into a dramatic soap opera would be the easy way out. Skipping over the procedures and processes that would be involved, Closer to God goes directly to the creation of a clone and then asks, "What now?" As opposed to the army of movies that imagine clones in the future, writer/director Billy Senese wrestles with the essence of the issue, right here, and right now. Victor Reed (Jeremy Childs) is a scientist who is obsessed with cloning. He's not a "mad" scientist, though his obsessive behavior is certainly reminiscent of Mary Shelley's famed scientist, Dr. Victor Frankenstein. What this modern-day Victor exudes is devotion to his important work and single-minded focus on success. He conducts interviews, but he is not at...

“Closer to God” is a new twist on the classic “Frankenstein” tale with the addition of cloning. Director/producer Billy Senese elaborated more on making of the film in a recent press interview. Senese stated that the film drew from his love of Mary Shelley’s iconic novel. “['Frankenstein'] was a big book for me when I was young, and I love the James Whale movies from the 1930s, “Frankenstein” and “Bride of Frankenstein.” I always wanted to do my own interpretation of this story, kind of reinvent those same ideas and themes into a modern reality, one that we might actually face in our lifetime,” he said. “So about 6 months [ Read More ]

Many sci-fi/horror films take on the notion of scientists possibly not weighing the ramifications of their breakthroughs, like “The Fly” and “Splice.” Uncork’d Entertainment and Breaking Glass Picture’s upcoming release “Closer to God” follows in the footsteps of these films by tackling the uncomfortable topic of cloning. “Closer to God” is written and directed by Billy Senese and has been described as an “ambitious, thoughtful and provocative take on the Frankenstein story” by ScreenDaily and a “mind-blowing, thought-provoking, disturbing and brilliant film” by Talent Monthly. We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

It's that time of year again, isn't it? There is no greater party on Earth for fans of genre films than Austin's annual Fantastic Fest, and ten years in, they just keep making it better. "In 2014, we are taking no prisoners. This festival is going to set new boundaries of decadence, destruction and debauchery." - Tim League As much as I love events like Cannes, Sundance, or Toronto, I can't imagine the directors of those festivals ever issuing that statement. The scary thing is that Tim League isn't kidding. Fantastic Fest is special because it's much more than just movies being screened. Every day is packed with events that elevate the entire festival, and with this year taking place at the new Alamo Drafthouse on S. Lamar, complete with the brand-new Highball, it feels like it's going to be a blow-out the likes of which even the most avid Fantastic...

The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. About to have its international premiere at the Fantasia Festival in Montreal, director Billy Senese has just released the first trailer for his indie scifi thriller Closer To God. Here's how the festival describes it:The first successful cloning of a human pulls a brilliant genetic scientist into the center of volatile battle between science and religion in this unique reinterpretation of the Frankenstein story that's equal parts philosophical science-fiction/horror and paranoid thriller. Hypnotically cinematic and evocative of early Cronenberg, this is a fiercely intelligent knockout of a feature from award-winning short filmmaker Billy Senese (The Suicide Tapes).Take a look at the trailer below....
