Producer-director Chuck Braverman and Solid Entertainment president Richard Propper will present a three-day conference on documentary and reality filmmaking called Westdoc: The West Coast Documentary and Reality Conference, set to run Sept. 14-16 at the Doubletree Suites Hotel in Santa Monica.
The lineup will include such participants as Thom Beers (Original Prods.), R.J. Cutler (Actual Reality Pictures), David Goldberg (Endemol North America) Robert Greenwald (Brave New Films), and Susan Lacy (American Masters, PBS).
Among the seminars to be offered: "How to Survive in This Economy"; "Getting the Network's Attention -- Especially From the Left Coast," "The Death of DVD -- Long Live Digital Delivery"; "From Indie to Oscar Nominee -- a Look at Feature Docs That Scored"; "Secrets of Superstar Producers -- Their Rise and Current Projects"; "Programmers' Panel -- What do HBO, Fox, Discovery, Tlc, Really Want?"; and "From One-Off Documentary to a Reality Series -- Those Who Achieved It.

Nonfiction filmmaker Diane Estelle Vicari has been elected president of the International Documentary Assn. Vicari steps up from her position as first vp of the organization. "IDA remains committed to fostering a free and open dialogue in the global community of documentary filmmakers and to serving as advocates for the art form," Vicari said. "We believe that the public wants to see documentaries that deal with the issues of our times. The reality is that documentaries can give them access to in-depth information and news that they can't get any other way." She replaces the IDA's outgoing president, Richard Propper, who served a full term.

D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus will receive the International Documentary Assn. 2005 Career Achievement Award. The husband and wife, who frequently collaborate on nonfiction film projects, will be feted Dec. 9 during the 21st Annual IDA Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards Benefit Gala at the Directors Guild of America Theater. "D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus have made unique and important contributions to advancing our understanding and appreciation of humanity," IDA president Richard Propper said. The International Documentary Assn. has created an award this year to recognize cinematographers. The first docu DP to earn the IDA's honor is Joan Churchill, who has compiled about 50 cinematography credits since the early 1970s. Churchill has shot such projects as Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer, Soldier Girls and, more recently, Bearing Witness, a feature-length docu directed by Barbara Kopple and Bob Eisenhardt about female journalists working in combat zones in Iraq. "Joan Churchill is a complete filmmaker who has earned the respect of her peers and made a difference in the world," IDA president Richard Propper said. "She exemplifies the values and spirit of nonfiction filmmakers around the world."...
