Mike Portnoy has opened up about reuniting with Dream Theater after 13 years away from the band. The drummer detailed the steps that went into his return to the veteran prog-metal act, including “reconnecting with [singer] James Labrie.”
As previously reported, Dream Theater announced in October that founding member Portnoy is back in the band following his departure in 2010. He replaces Mike Mangini, who was had been the band’s drummer since Portnoy’s departure.
Drumeo recently shared a clip of Portnoy playing Dream Theater’s “Pull Me Under” for the first time in 13 years, and now the online drumming platform has unveiled its full interview and playthrough session with the legendary stickman (watch below).
In the interview, Portnoy explained how the reunion came together, saying, “I guess it really started to gain some traction during Covid lockdown because I couldn’t tour and Dream Theater couldn’t tour, so [guitarist] John [Petrucci] decided...

Drummer Mike Portnoy recently rejoined Dream Theater after a 13-year absence from the band. Suffice to say, he’s lost none of his chops during that span, offering up an impressive drum playthrough of Dream Theater’s “Pull Me Under” in a new tutorial video.
The clip comes as part of a video package for the instructional drum platform Drumeo, which filmed the series with Portnoy just weeks after he announced his return to Dream Theater. A playthrough of the band’s well-known early number “Pull Me Under” — which Portnoy hadn’t played since leaving the band — was the first of the content to drop.
“I had such a blast at Drumeo!” enthused Portnoy on Facebook. “We filmed sooo much content that will slowly be revealed over the coming months …here’s the first of Many songs/videos to come! I hadn’t played this song in over 13 years! The...

Dream Theater have announced the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy after a 13 year absence from the band. The legendary stickman is back in the veteran prog-metal act’s lineup, as his replacement Mike Mangini exits the group.
Portnoy, who formed the band under the name Majesty with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung in 1985, officially exited Dream Theater in September 2010. The drummer had begun working with Avenged Sevenfold around that time, filling the shoes of that band’s late drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. He ultimately didn’t get the full-time gig in Avenged Sevenfold, and ended up out of both bands. He soon lobbied for his job back in Dream Theater, but had been replaced by Mangini.
Recent events have suggested a reconnection between Portnoy and Dream Theater, including the drummer playing on Petrucci’s latest solo album, Terminal Velocity, as well as the pair hitting the road together for a 2022 tour.

Dream Theater’s career has spanned three decades and more than a dozen studio albums. But when it came to the progressive metal giants’ newest effort, Distance Over Time, due February 22nd, they still managed to find new and unique ways to approach the writing and recording process. This time, the New York–based five-piece — guitarist John Petrucci, singer James Labrie, bassist John Myung, keyboardist Jordan Rudess and drummer Mike Mangini — decided to leave town together, heading up to a five-acre property in the Catskills. It was there, in a secluded barn studio dubbed,...

It seems so often these days that all I want to do is burn things to the ground... This is not the confession of a pyromaniac but rather the resignation of a former believer who is convinced that, in so many aspects of life, it'd better if we just started over. However, occasionally something will come along that breathes life into my ever-dwindling hope. Bernie certainly did that for me in the realm of politics, Banksy has long since revitalized my belief in the possibilities of the visual arts, and, in the world of rock, I recently discovered a local secret here in Seattle which, if there's anything right with the music scene, won't remain a secret for much longer. In a time where rock seems to be sliding on to the popularity back-burner I am happy...

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.
