Cheech Marin — who gained lasting fame as half of the pioneering stoner-comedy duo Cheech & Chong starting in the ’70s before making his own way acting in film and television — thought it was kismet. He had just learned that the “beautiful midcentury building” he’d been offered to house his leading collection of art by Chicanos (an identifier for people of Mexican descent born in the U.S.) was 61,420 square feet. “Four-twenty, you say?” he recalls five years later. “Thank you, Lord! It felt like this was meant to happen.”
The “this” Marin is referring to is the new Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum — or The Cheech, for short — which is opening June 18 in the former downtown public library building of Riverside, California. Many of YouTube's top musicians--including Megan Nicole, Tyler Ward, Snoop Lion, and Mike Tompkins--use either Maker Studios or Fullscreen their network of choice. Now, these artists (and hundreds of others) will have more flexibility when it comes to cover songs. Maker and Fullscreen have announced a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group which will allow the two networks' creators to access and monetize Universal's entire library. Many YouTube artists already thrive off of cover songs, and this new deal will allow these videos to take a step up from quasi-legal, at least for the two participating networks. Maker and Fullscreen artists will be able to cover songs from Universal artists without any fear of copyright infringement, and revenue made from these cover videos will go to both the record label and the YouTube artist. “This is a groundbreaking arrangement that encourages the use of our music and unleashes Maker to reach its full potential,...

Criminal suspects learn quickly that everything they say can and will be used against them in court. Diversified entertainment companies might be headed for a similar lesson. Months after being sued by Universal Music Group for copyright infringement, News Corp.-owned MySpace and Sony-owned Grouper continue to fight the cases, arguing protection under what has become Web 2.0's calling card, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This despite the fact that sister companies 20th Century Fox and Sony's music and film divisions continue to wage aggressive anti-piracy campaigns, pressing some of the same arguments being wielded against their new-media affiliates by UMG.
No one is more aware of this balancing act than UMG president Zach Horowitz, who provided insight into his company's litigation strategy at a Grammy week luncheon for entertainment lawyers when he called out Sony and News Corp. UMG sued MySpace for copyright infringement after one of its biggest releases of last year, Jay-Z's "Kingdom Come", was circulated on the social networking site "before its release date, in its entirety, on demand, to potentially millions of listeners -- for free -- without our consent," Horowitz said.

PARIS -- Universal Music Group, the world's largest record company, said Thursday that it was well-poised to transform itself from a "record company" to a "music entertainment company" by finally being able to take advantage of the technological changes that have aided illegal downloads and blighted the music industry in recent years. Addressing a group of analysts and investors in London, UMG executives, including chairman and CEO Doug Morris and president and chief operating officer Zach Horowitz, said existing digital businesses will be "the engine of growth for the next several years." The executives said that UMG, part of Vivendi Universal, did not intend to embrace one business model for the future, but would instead "aggressively pursue all avenues" to maximize profits. "New opportunities will emerge to monetize our assets and create new revenue streams," the company predicted.
