Montevideo, May 18 (Ians) Veteran Argentine manager Marcelo Bielsa said that he did not need to be persuaded to accept the job as Uruguay’s national team boss.
The 67-year-old made the comments as he faced local media for the first time since officially replacing Diego Alonso on Monday, reports Xinhua.
Alonso’s contract was terminated after Uruguay’s failure to progress beyond the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“I did not have to be convinced… I like the players that have represented the country in recent years,” Bielsa told a news conference.
“There are countries that combine the awareness of their power, of their potential, and enhance it through fantasy and hope. Uruguay has the resources to nurture that hope.”
Bielsa, who agreed to a contract that runs until the 2026 World Cup, had been out of work since parting ways with Leeds United in February last year.

Watched by a vibrant crowd at the Education City Stadium both teams had plenty of attacking quality on show but nothing could separate the two at the end of the 90-minute and had to settle for a point each in the group which consists of Ghana and Portugal.
Thursday’s result leaves both sides’ chances of reaching the last 16 wide open, as Uruguay prepare to face Portugal next, while South Korea meet Ghana.
Uruguay were unlucky twice in the match, first with a minute to go for the first half when Diego Godin’s header hit the post.
The metal work came between Uruguay and a goal again in the final minute of normal time when a long ranger flew past Kim Seunggyu in the Korean goal and rattled the post but did not end in the back of the nets much to the disappointment of the Uruguay fans.

Doha, Nov 23 (Ians) Diego Alonso, Uruguay’s head coach, said the country’s signature star Luis Suarez is fit enough to feature in their opening World Cup match against South Korea on Thursday.
“He is as fit as other players, he is ready for the game,” said Alonso, adding the 35-year-old striker was enjoying the atmosphere of attending another edition of the World Cup tournament.
However, he admitted that he had not yet decided on the starters against South Korea.
“With our strikers, our plan is to put a good performance in the first game. We are very much excited about what we can produce,” said Alonso.
“We have peace of mind because we have goalscoring opportunities, flexibility not only with our strikers, we are good defensively and this will make us a very competitive team,” he added.
Coached in China’s Super League club in 2017, Alonso replaced Oscar Tabarez last November.

Doha, Nov 16 (Ians) With the 2022 FIFA World Cup approaching, the participating teams are all fine-tuning their preparations for the quadrennial gala.
The star-studded Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo are the favourites in Group H, but it is by no means a one-horse race, as Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana will all have what it takes to make the competition wide open.
Portugal enter the scene on November 24 by taking on Ghana, then meet Uruguay before their final group game with South Korea.
In 2018, Portugal crashed out in the round of 16 after a 2-1 defeat to Uruguay. And in Brazil in 2014, Portugal suffered a group stage exit despite a 2-1 victory over Ghana. Pushing the timeline backwards further, South Korea enjoyed a shock win over Portugal en route to their history-making success in 2002.
