On December 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a speech at this year’s National Association of Christian Lawmakers gala.
During his speech, he thanked the event’s organizers for not inviting any reporters, though it has not been made clear if he knew that the event’s organizer would record and post a video of the gala on his Facebook page.
“I’ll tell you a secret since the media’s not here,” Johnson told them.
His secret was that he had many conversations with God in the lead-up to the speaker role with which he was anointed.
“The Lord impressed upon my heart a few weeks before this happened that something was going to occur,” he said. “And the Lord very specifically told me in my prayers to prepare but to wait. I had this sense that we were going to come to a Red Sea moment in our...

The conservative news streaming service is off to the races, showing off an impressive subscriber total for its first 30 days.
It’s hard to underestimate the importance of live news, even as cord-cutting continues to impact the TV-watching audience. One survey from September found that all age groups used their broadcast TV channels to watch news more than any other type of programming.
The conservative news streaming service Newsmax+ launched at the beginning of November. At the end of that month, the service had already accrued 150,000 subscribers. The figure is impressive for a streamer with a niche audience and a narrow selection of content. How is Newsmax+ Doing?
When Newsmax+ first launched earlier this month, it was undoubtedly a gamble for Newsmax. After all, the channel’s content had been streaming on a free ad-supported TV (Fast) channel on platforms like Roku and YouTube, so it was no guarantee that...

The hard-right news channel now has its own subscription streaming platform, with prices starting at $4.99 per month.
The removal of Newsmax from Directv earlier this year drew sharp protests from ultra-conservative viewers of the channel, who were quick to cry censorship at its withdrawal. Directv insisted there was no political motivation behind the removal, and eventually a new carriage deal brought the channel back to airwaves for Directv customers.
Carriage disputes are only becoming more common as cable and satellite lose customers, however. To help allay audience anxiety that the channel may be pulled from other providers in the future, Newsmax has launched its own direct-to-consumer (Dtc) service, imaginatively named Newsmax+, which is available now.

Even in the basement of the Iron Horse bar and grill, it’s hot in Chariton, Iowa. The woman next to me fans herself with her “Ron DeSantis for President” flyer. A little boy leaning against the barrier between the crowd and the small stage plugs his ears against the too-loud dad rock blasting from the too-big speakers. All anyone talks about is the heat, which is for the birds, a man says wiping his forehead. For the birds.

The Duggar family is under the spotlight thanks to the 2023 docuseries, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets. The miniseries exposes the Institute in Basic Life Principles — better known as Iblp — and how the religious teachings shaped the Duggar family’s values. Bill Gothard is the Iblp leader. So, where is Gothard in 2023? Here’s what to know.

Kenny Rogers died on March 20, 2020. The country star was 81 years old. How did Rogers die? Here’s what we know.
Kenny Rogers’ musical inspiration Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton | Jim Steinfeldt/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images
Although Rogers is known for his country songs, he was inspired by gospel music. In his book Luck or Something Like It, Rogers says he grew up around different types of music. However, gospel had a major impact on him. He says he was drawn to the strong voices and the melody. There was a church in his neighborhood where he could hear gospel music playing. He noticed how different the music was from the hymns played at his church.
“There was a little Black gospel church just down the street from Lanzo’s [grocery store],” wrote Rogers. “Sometimes I could hear music coming from that church, music that was far different from what I heard...

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the former White House press secretary and newly elected governor of Arkansas, will deliver the GOP response after President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday.
Sanders will deliver the address from Little Rock.
Sanders served as President Donald Trump’s press secretary from 2017 to 2019. She then joined Fox News as a commentator, but left that position to run for governor of Arkansas. She followed her father, Mike Huckabee, as governor of the state and is the first woman to hold that position.
Kim Reynolds, the governor of Iowa, delivered the GOP response last year.
In a statement, Sanders said, “We are ready to begin a new chapter in the story of America – to be written by a new generation of leaders ready to defend our freedom against the radical left and expand access to quality education, jobs, and opportunity for all.”

If you see just one thriller this year in which a climactic car chase is followed by the director-star breaking character to deliver a five-minute sermon straight into the camera — followed by three more minutes of Mike Huckabee leading viewers in prayer to accept Jesus into their hearts, before the end credits roll — then make it “Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist,” the latest in a series of apocalyptic films based on the bestselling Christian book series.
Although “Rise” is the sixth feature derived from dozens of rapture-iffic novels and spinoff novellas published under the “Left Behind” banner in the mid-’90s through mid-2000s, it’s the first in the film series to have Kevin Sorbo as a leading man as well as director. Where past installments were relatively coy about their evangelistic purpose, Sorbo opts to add a literal come-to-Jesus epilogue. You may recall that the last actor...

Donald Trump did draw the media spotlight for his presidential announcement speech on Tuesday, but the networks varied in how they approached the event, carrying parts of it and cutting away at others.
The coverage perhaps offers a glimpse of how Trump will be covered as he embarks on his third presidential bid — certainly a top story, but not the only one.
Trump promoted the speech as “one of the most important ones in the history of our country,” but the networks alternated their focus on other stories throughout the day. That included the missile hit on Poland that, just minutes before Trump took the stage, put the focus on his nemesis, President Joe Biden.
CNN carried the speech from Mar-a-Lago for more than 20 minutes before cutting away when Trump made the official announcement. Anderson Cooper then went to a fact check with Daniel Dale, a fixture during the 2020 election cycle.

Donald Trump said from behind a podium at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday that he’s launching a campaign to take back the White House in 2024. It wasn’t exactly a rousing announcement. The former president seemed bored as he squinted at his teleprompter and regurgitated well-trod talking points about immigration, crime, the economy, and more, mixing in several rambling tangents.
The speech was so dull that even Sean Hannity cut away from it.

Mike Huckabee hosted a Christmas special on Newsmax this week, and he was lucky enough to score an interview with Donald Trump. It went about as expected, with the former Arkansas governor gushing about all the invaluable work the former president did to reinvigorate America with the spirit of Christmas … or something.
“America had gone through a long period where people quit saying Merry Christmas. It was all Happy Holiday,” a bearded Huckabee told Trump with a twinkle in his eye. “You deliberately changed that and openly said Merry Christmas.

Kayleigh McEnany, a White House Press Secretary during the Trump administration whose performance in the role drew criticism, has joined Fox News as a contributor, the network announced Tuesday. Details were revealed during an on-air interview with Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner.
McEnany isn’t the first Trump administration official to take an on-air role with the Fox Corp.-backed outlet. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a McEnany predecessor in the White House press operations, became a contributor in 2019, and recently stepped down to pursue a run for governor of Arkansas. Larry Kudlow, a former Trump economic advisor, now anchors an hour on Fox Business Network.

Reports swirled about her next gig on Tuesday after Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington obtained her recent financial disclosure form, which showed a line listing “employment agreement with Fox News, starting work in January.” The form is required for certain government employees.
But a Fox News spokesperson said that McEnany “is not currently an employee or contributor at Fox News.”

Fox News Channel held talks with Kayleigh McEnany, the former White House Press Secretary whose performance in the role earned sharp criticism, about a possible position at the cable-news outlet, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Those conversations have yet to bear fruit. “Kayleigh McEnany is not currently an employee or contributor at Fox News,” the Fox Corporation-owned network said in a statement Tuesday.
Fox and McEnany held talks after the 2020 election, this person says, but paused them for a reason that was not discussed. The network remains open to hiring McEnany, who first came to wider prominence as a contributor at CNN in the run-up to the nation’s 2016 election. While McEnany’s routine use of press conferences at the White House to insult reporters while not answering many questions in direct fashion has resulted in many detractors, Fox News executives “do not condone cancel culture,” this person said.

Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made it official on Monday that she is running for governor of Arkansas, posting an announcement video that has echoes of Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign.

Donald Trump is tapping a series of donors, supporters and other figures to fill spots on the board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
On Tuesday, the White House said that the president intended to appoint Elaine Chao, his secretary of transportation, to the board. Also announced was Lynn Friess, who with her husband, conservative activist and donor Foster Friess runs a family philanthropic foundation; Douglas Manchester, the San Diego real estate developer whose nomination to be the ambassador to the Bahamas was dropped amid reports of an alleged pay for play scheme; Hannah Buchan, founder of an asset management fund whose husband Duke is the U.S. ambassador to Spain; and philanthropist Catherine Reynolds.
The board of trustees includes three dozen members appointed by the president to six-year terms. Trump’s appointees have included Jon Voight, Lee Greenwood, Mike Huckabee and Andrea Wynn.

Refresh for updates With a mix of sincere best wishes, karma-is-a-bitch snark, stunned disbelief and saw-it-coming hindsight, Hollywood and the Beltway responded quickly to the late-night news of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump testing positive for Covid-19.
“I am very surprised by the twist ending of ‘2020: Episode 3’ and I don’t see how they will be able to wrap this all up in one more episode,” tweeted actor Sean Gunn.
John Cleese drew some angry responses with his Python-esque sarcasm: “A doctor friend of mine tells me that Covid19 symptoms include delusions of grandeur, compulsive attention-seeking, extreme narcissism…”
In a less humorous mood, Ava DuVernay tweeted, “I hope this changes the discourse around this virus among the people who follow him and don’t give a damn. And in turn, who damn the rest of us. People have lost their lives. Their loved ones. And...

Ken Osmond, who played obsequious troublemaker Eddie Haskell on TV’s Leave It to Beaver, has died, his manager confirms. Osmond was 76.
“He was an incredibly kind and wonderful father,” his son, Eric, said in a statement. “He had his family gathered around him when he passed. He was loved and will be very missed.”
The impact of his most famous performance can be measured by the fact that, for those of us of a certain age, if someone is described as an “Eddie Haskell”-type, we know exactly what is meant.
Appropriately, tributes poured in from across a broad spectrum. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Osmond “created a memorable character,” and Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach cited Eddie Haskell as one of his “all-time influences.”

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer isn’t letting the controversy surrounding his appearance on “Dancing With the Stars” get to him.
“It’s nothing new,” Spicer told Variety after he made his “DWTS” debut on Monday night.
ABC faced quick backlash following the announcement last month that Spicer had been cast on the show. Even “DWTS” host Tom Bergeron released a statement expressing disappointment that producers politicized the show.
“Look, I’m used to that, you’ve got to zone it out, enjoy yourself. I know who I am and what I believe and I’m comfortable with that,” Spicer said. “I did this to have some fun, enjoy myself and hopefully show what a great opportunity this show is for the country to bring people together, allow you to root for another person regardless of their background. And we’re missing a lot of that right now.

Hours after his debut on Dancing With The Stars in a hot lime fluffy shirt, Sean Spicer wrote on Twitter that “clearly the judges aren’t going to be with me” and suggested that viewers could send a message to Hollywood “that those of us who stand for Christ won’t be discounted.”
Spicer already has suggested that he may draw on email lists of supporters who bought his book or who signed up to his website SeanSpicer.com to encourage votes for him on the show, as judges gave him low marks in his debut appearance. That may have the feel of a political campaign, but he also is framing a DWTS win as a victory in the culture wars.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders hasn’t held an official news conference in three months, and now she might not do any more. President Donald Trump announced via Twitter today that the woman who took over the podium from Sean Spicer in July 2017 will leave the administration at month’s end.
The presidential tweets hinted that Sanders someday might run for governor of Arkansas, a job her father Mike Huckabee held from 1996-2007:
….She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job! I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas – she would be fantastic. Sarah, thank you for a job well done!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 13, 2019
No replacement for the job has been named.
Sanders’ tenure was a rocky one marked by sometimes-ugly clashes with with the White House press corps — famously CNN’s Jim Acosta — and Democrats’ accusations of spreading falsehoods.

Fox News has re-signed former governor Mike Huckabee as a contributor, a representative for the network confirmed on Friday. The channel didn’t offer any specifics about how long the contract was for or any additional details.
Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas and two-time presidential candidate, has a long history with the network. Before becoming a contributor, he hosted his own Saturday show titled “Huckabee,” which ran from 2008 to 2015. The show ended when Huckabee left to pursue his second unsuccessful presidential run in 2016.
“As much as I have loved doing the show, I cannot bring myself to rule out another presidential run,” Huckabee told the New York Times. (It was later revived with Huckabee by the Christian-themed Trinity Broadcasting Network in 2017.)

Uh, did John C. Reilly and Stephen Colbert just become best friends? Well, if the CBS late-night host is as amused by Reilly’s story about the authenticity of his “Step Brothers” farts as we are, then the answer is “Yup!”
Reilly and Colbert met for the first time during Thursday’s “Late Show,” and took the opportunity to trade war stories about their respective tenures doing improv and theater in Chicago in the ’80s. Reilly — who was more a stage thespian at the time — started listing off all the actors he admired from those days, one being John Malkovich.
And, uh, you can thank John for inspiring Reilly to really go big with his bodily functions while shooting the 2008 comedy with Will Ferrell.

Kim Davis, the clerk of Rowan County Kentucky who achieved 15 minutes of national infamy for refusing to grant marriage licenses back in 2015, was ousted form her office Tuesday evening.
Republican Davis was defeated by Elwood Caudill Jr. by a margin of about 700 votes, the Lexington Herald Leader reported.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, who has worked as an on-air panelist on Fox News programs like “The Five” and “Outnumbered” since 2006, is no longer with the 21st Century Fox-owned network, according to a statement released Friday afternoon. She is widely expected to join the parade of Fox News personalities and executives who have gone to work for the Trump administration.
Guilfoyle, who has been linked romantically to Donald Trump Jr. in recent months, has long been said to have strong ties to the president. Mike Huckabee on Monday defended a tweet suggesting that House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi employed Ms-13 gang members, telling Fox News host Shannon Bream that the blowback was all just a misunderstanding and evidence that clearly people didn’t understand “satire.”
“It was satire,” he told Bream, brushing aside the controversy. “I tell people all the time and I regularly post on my Twitter account. If you don’t have a sense of humor, if you cannot handle satire, please don’t follow me.”
The original joke from Huckabee on Saturday suggested that Pelosi was employing Ms-13 gang members.

Jim Carrey’s vivid, politically-motivated painting jag hasn’t abated just yet, and the artistically inclined actor has once again turned his attention to some of the nation’s top Republicans. In his latest painting — revealed, as ever, on his Twitter account — Carrey goes after House Republicans, including Devin Nunes, and what appears to be renderings of Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. The topic at hand: breakfast. Kind of.
In his accompanying caption, Carrey writes, “Every morning Trump makes special breakfast sandwiches for House Republicans. Devin Nunes eagerly finishes first and always asks for seconds!” The imagery is as expected, a colorful and cartoon-ish take on some of the country’s biggest political names, none of whom appear to be impressing Carrey these days. In putting together this week’s feature on the new, more inclusive Nashville, Variety spoke to a number of prominent figures in the country music community about their coming out experiences and life as a gay resident of Music City. In reporting “Nashville’s New Guard” on the heels of the March controversy over anti-same-sex-marriage crusader Mike Huckabee’s appointment to a charitable Cma board (reversed in a day under pressure), lingering questions remained over the challenges and opportunities Music Row’s gay community still faces.

In stepping down from the position, Huckabee bitterly publicized his stance by posting his resignation letter on social media with the headline “Hate Wins” — far from how most of the town saw the decision.
