Indie rockers Shout Out Louds have released “Blue Ice,” their first new piece of music in three years, in an extremely limited-edition 7-inch single that plays on, well, ice. There are only 10 kits capable of producing the record, each of which comes with a mold and a bottle of water to freeze in that mold to make an ice-based record. “Blue Ice” is the first single off the group's upcoming, as-yet-untitled, full-length album—an album that hopefully will not also be exclusively distributed via something that melts and has the potential to ruin electronics. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released a 2 and a half minutes musical mash up of the upcoming film “Prom.” Here is the official synopsis: “At ‘Prom,’ every couple has a story and no two are exactly alike. Several intersecting stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches; ‘Prom’ portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden), it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy (Thomas McDonell) who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Fellow seniors Mei (Yin Chang) and Tyler (De’Vaughn Nixon) harbor secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events. There are hundreds of nights in high school, but there’s only one ‘Prom.’” The film also stars Danielle Campbell, Kylie Bunbury, Nicholas Braun,...

Happythankyoumoreplease is the winsome directorial debut of Josh Radnor, who also wrote and starred in this ensemble comedy that drew resounding praise at 2010′s Sundance Film Festival, taking home an Audience Award. I recently had the chance to see this feature that proudly wears its heart on its sleeve, and instantly took to the film’s warm demeanor, vibrant characters and irresistible soundtrack. (Read my full review here.)
Shortly after Happythankyoumoreplease hit theaters, I had the chance to speak with Radnor, who proved to be as affable and loquacious as the character he plays on How I Met Your Mother. What began as an interview about his filmmaking process soon gave way to an intense conversation, in which we discussed the current trend toward cinematic cynicism and the state of film criticism. With so much to report, I’ve opted to break our interview into two parts.

After a seemingly endless absence from golf (and from the public spotlight in general), Tiger Woods has returned to the game that made him into one of the most recognizable celebrities on the planet. The Masters, one of golf's crown jewels, kicks off on Thursday (April 8), but Woods hit the links today for a bit of practice in his first public display of golf in months. Following his public apology and a series of low-key interviews, Woods is ready to get back to business, and the golf world couldn't be happier. Despite his long layoff, Woods is expected to be a top contender in this year's tournament, and some experts are saying that he should be considered the favorite to win another iconic green jacket (it would be the fifth in his career) and his first major win since his epic defeat of Rocco Mediate at the 2008 U.S. Open Championship.

Feel-good electro-pop from Sweden—can you believe it?! On its latest, Swedish pop quintet Shout Out Louds bring their uptempo, ’80s-nostalgic style to a collection of songs perfect for that jolt you need to kick off a long road trip. Lead singer Adam Olenius’ high-register vocals—which call to mind The Shins’ James Mercer—meld unexpectedly well with the pumping beats, making lovely use of background vocalist Bebban Stenborg, whose sweet-sounding responses on “Fall Hard” offset the forceful rhythms, and who harmonizes deftly with Olenius on the otherwise insubstantial “Throwing Stones."...

On 2007’s Our Ill Wills, the Swedish indie-rockers in Shout Out Louds did their best impression of a bargain-store Cure, wrapping deep woe in tinny effervescence. Three years later, on Work, Shout Out Louds have Built To Spill/Shins producer Phil Ek pumping up the sound, and while the third album is beefier, it still traffics in the mid-’80s version of British post-punk, where the sentiments remain dark even as the music turns bright and sparkly. Where Shout Out Louds used to sound a little stymied by the options of what kind of band to be (hence the ...

You'd never know it based on media coverage, but one of the most exciting tennis tournaments in ages is currently happening right now in Melbourne, Australia. The Australian Open is typically difficult for Americans to follow because it's happening on the opposite side of the Earth, but so far, there have been a handful of upsets and some excellent performances from Justine Henin and top seed Serena Williams.
Back in 1996, the Australian Open served as the stage for an emotional comeback for Monica Seles, who was crowned champion of the tournament on this day 14 years ago. Not only was it the ninth Grand Slam win for the 22-year-old Seles, but it was her first since getting stabbed in the middle of a match in one of the most harrowing incidents in the history of organized sports. Back in 1993, Seles was squaring off against Magdalena Maleeva in a tournament in Hamburg,...
