Gerard Johnstone's Housebound is arguably one of the best horror comedy films of the past decade and has kept the Kiwi director on our watch list since. Johnstone and his Housebound producer Luke Sharpe have gone ahead and adapted a New Zealand comic book character from the 80s, Terry Teo, and the new series will debut on July 12th. After I saw this trailer yesterday I started to do some digging. So I reached out to my relatives from the Nz and Johnstone himself for a bit more information about the source material and the new project. One cousin definitely remembered the original comic Terry Teo and the Gunrunners but did not get into the television series it was adapted to. In fact,...

“What are you gonna do against a hostile spirit?” “I’m gonna smash it in the face.” Those who caught the New Zealand horror-comedy Housebound last year may remember this spirited exchange, which perfectly captures the attitude of protagonist Kylie Bucknell, one who is not the type to cower from the paranormal activity that runs rampant in her mother’s home.
After receiving positive reviews across the board—including Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings and Dead Alive fame—director Kylie Bucknell’s Housebound will be reimagined for North American audiences by New Line.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line, aka the house that Freddy built, has acquired the rights to remake Housebound, with Johnstone attached as a producer. The folks at New Line are looking for a writer to pen the adaptation, as well as a director for the project (perhaps they will be one and the...

One of the more refreshing horror movies to come out lately is the New Zealand comedy Housebound. After an exciting film festival run, the movie has gotten a U.S. home video release. The story is an homage to various horror films, including The Legend of Hell House, The Changeling, and The Evil Dead. Spinning off the ghost hunting craze and borrowing from some home invasion thrillers, Housebound is one of those movies worth seeking out. Recorded in August 2014, before the actors actually saw the final version of the film, the production brain trust took some time to drink beer and watch the movie together. Here is the result. Housebound (2014) Commentators: Gerard Johnstone (writer/director), Ant Timpson (executive producer), Luke Sharpe (producer) 1. The opening of the movie was originally conceived to be much longer with some backstory to Kylie’s (Morgana O’Reilly) friend, but it was edited out for the Atm robbery to be the first...

“What are you gonna do against a hostile spirit?” “I’m gonna smash it in the face.” Kylie Bucknell is definitely not the type to cower from the slightest paranormal activity, but when she’s placed on house arrest in her intensely haunted childhood home, her nerves and ghost-fighting skills will be tested. A horror-comedy that had its first Us showing at SXSW earlier this year, Housebound has unleashed a new trailer.
“Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam – a well-intentioned blabbermouth who’s convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam’s superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small-town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy...

Films Distribution has picked up international sales on horror comedy Housebound, which premiered to critical acclaim at SXSW this year.
The film revolves around a wayward teen who is sent to live with mother under house-arrest after being caught trying to rob a bank.
As well as having to deal with her chatterbox mother, she discovers the house is haunted, with both hilarious and terrifying consequences.
The poltergeist caper is a first feature for up-and-coming New Zealand director Gerard Johnstone, whose previous credits include The Jaquie Brown Diaries series, a popular, award-winning series in New Zealand.
Films Distribution co-chief Nicolas Brigaud-Robert described Houseband as “both funny and witty but also unpredictable and full of suspense”.
The deal was brokered between Sebastien Beffa of Films Distribution and producers Ant Timpson and Luke Sharpe of Semi-Professional Pictures alongside the New Zealand Film Commission.
“We’re looking forward to our first collaboration with Semi-Professional Pictures and our second film with...
